First, find the transaction hash and check it on an XRP Ledger explorer. An XRP payment is not final because a wallet says “sent”: confirm that the transaction is included in a validated ledger, verify the destination address and amount, and read the result code. If the payment is validated and the address is correct but an exchange has not credited you, only the receiving exchange can investigate and credit the deposit. A missing or wrong destination tag also requires the receiving service’s recovery process.
Start with the transaction hash, not the app status
The transaction hash (also called a TxID) is the identifier that lets you distinguish an actual XRP Ledger payment from a withdrawal request that was never successfully submitted. Find it in the sending wallet’s transaction history or the exchange’s withdrawal record. Copy it exactly; do not rely on a shortened display or a screenshot alone.

Paste the hash into an XRP Ledger explorer or query it through an XRP Ledger API. Check all of the following:
- The destination account address.
- The XRP amount.
- The transaction result, such as
tesSUCCESS. - The ledger index in which it appears.
- Whether that ledger is marked validated.
XRPL documentation distinguishes validated results from provisional ones. An unvalidated result is tentative and can change, so it cannot prove that the transfer is final. A validated result is the point at which you can decide whether to wait, ask the sender to investigate, or open a recipient-side recovery ticket.

How long an XRP payment normally takes
The XRP Ledger documentation says most payments reach a final outcome in roughly 4–7 seconds. That is protocol guidance, not a guarantee for every wallet, exchange, network connection, or maintenance window. A service may show “pending” while it is still preparing or broadcasting the transaction, even though the ledger itself is operating normally.
If the transfer is not visible in a validated ledger after the normal window, treat it as unresolved rather than assuming the funds are lost. Keep the hash, continue checking, and contact the service that sent the transaction. Ask whether the withdrawal was actually submitted to the XRP Ledger, whether it received a result code, and whether it may be retried. Do not create a second payment until you know what happened to the first one.
Use the ledger state and destination details to choose the next action
| Ledger result | Destination address | Tag state | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not found or unvalidated | Unknown | Unknown | The payment is not yet proven final. | Ask the sending service whether it was submitted; keep checking until a validated result appears. |
| Validated failure | Any | Any | The ledger rejected the transaction. The result code explains why. | Give the code to the sender and ask about a safe retry. Do not send again until the first attempt is understood. |
| Validated success | Correct | Correct | The ledger accepted the payment, but the recipient service may not have credited it yet. | Open a deposit ticket with the receiving exchange and attach the transaction evidence. |
| Validated success | Correct shared address | Missing | The payment may be recorded at the exchange’s common address but cannot be matched automatically. | Use the exchange’s missing-tag recovery process. |
| Validated success | Correct shared address | Wrong | The ledger can accept the payment even though the exchange’s customer mapping is wrong. | Request manual recovery from the receiving exchange; the outcome depends on its policy. |
| Validated success | Wrong | Any | The funds went to an account different from the intended recipient. | Contact the sending service and, if identifiable, the owner of the destination account. Recovery is not assured. |
If the transfer is pending or the hash cannot be found
1. Confirm that you copied the right identifier
Some services show an internal withdrawal ID before they publish an XRP Ledger hash. Check whether the record contains a 64-character hexadecimal transaction hash or a direct explorer link. If there is no ledger hash, the service may not have broadcast the payment yet.

2. Check the sending service
Review the withdrawal status, any maintenance notice, and the network selected. XRP transfers must use the XRP Ledger; a service may hold a withdrawal for risk review, account verification, batching, or connectivity problems. Ask support for the submission time, ledger result, and exact hash.
3. Wait for validation before taking an irreversible action
A pending transaction can still become successful or fail. XRPL guidance warns that unvalidated results are subject to change. Sending another payment may create a duplicate debit if the first transaction later validates.

4. Escalate with complete evidence
When contacting the sender, include the withdrawal ID, requested amount, destination address, time in UTC, and screenshots or exported records. Ask a precise question: “Was this transaction submitted to the XRP Ledger, and what validated result did it receive?”
When the ledger shows a validated failure
A validated failure means the network reached a final result and rejected the payment. Read the result code instead of treating every failure as the same. One documented example is tecDST_TAG_NEEDED, which occurs when the destination account has the RequireDest setting enabled and the payment omits a destination tag.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Send the failure code and transaction hash to the service that initiated the payment. The sender can determine whether its system can correct the tag and submit a new transaction. Do not assume a failed transaction will be retried automatically, and do not submit a replacement until the service confirms the first attempt cannot later succeed.
Why destination tags exist
A destination tag is an application-level number attached to an XRP payment. Centralized exchanges often use one XRP Ledger address for many customers. The address identifies the exchange, while the tag maps the payment to a particular customer account in the exchange’s internal system.
The tag is therefore not a second wallet address and is not stored as a separate balance on the ledger. The XRP Ledger records the payment and its tag value; the exchange decides how that value corresponds to a customer.

XRPL documentation describes the RequireDest setting. When it is enabled on an account, a payment without a destination tag is rejected with tecDST_TAG_NEEDED. If the setting is not enabled, a payment with no tag can still validate. A wrong tag can also validate because the ledger does not know the exchange’s customer-account mapping.
Missing tag versus wrong tag
Missing tag
If you omitted the tag and the transaction is validated to the exchange’s correct deposit address, the exchange may be able to identify the payment from the hash, amount, time, and sending account. It must still perform the recovery manually, and its policy determines whether it credits or returns the funds.
Wrong tag
A wrong tag is often more difficult because the payment may have been matched to another internal record or placed in an exception queue. Tell support both the tag you actually used and the correct tag shown on the exchange’s deposit page. Never guess which customer received the payment; only the exchange can inspect its internal ledger.
Tag rejected by the ledger
If the exchange requires a tag, omission may produce a validated failure rather than a missing deposit. In that case, there is no successful on-chain payment to recover. Give the failure code to the sender and follow its retry instructions.
What to send the receiving exchange
Use only the exchange’s official website or its in-app support channel. A useful ticket contains:

- Transaction hash (TxID).
- Exact XRP amount.
- Sending account address.
- Receiving account address.
- Date and time in UTC.
- The destination tag shown in the withdrawal record, including “none” if it was omitted.
- The correct destination tag supplied by the exchange.
- Withdrawal screenshots or an exported transaction record.
- Your exchange account identifier, if the official form requests it.
State the situation in one sentence, such as: “The payment is validated to your XRP deposit address, but I omitted the destination tag.” This helps route the request to the exchange’s missing-tag team instead of its general payment queue.
Do not send a seed phrase, private key, wallet password, one-time authentication code, or remote-control access. Legitimate support needs transaction evidence, not the credentials that control your funds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Correct tag, validated payment, zero exchange balance
A correct tag does not guarantee instant credit. Ripple’s official FAQ notes that exchanges have different processes and that they can experience delays in properly crediting XRP deposits even when the correct destination tag was included.
First confirm that the address, amount, and tag in the validated transaction exactly match the exchange’s current deposit instructions. Then open a deposit-crediting ticket with the hash and evidence listed above. Do not send a second deposit to “wake up” the account; duplicate payments can create another reconciliation problem.
Only the receiving exchange can credit its internal account or explain a compliance, maintenance, minimum-deposit, or processing hold. The XRP Ledger itself cannot update an exchange’s customer balance.
Best Value
Sending XRP to your own wallet versus an exchange
Ledger’s XRP guidance says destination tags are generally required for centralized-exchange deposits, while a transfer to your own Ledger wallet usually does not require one. The deciding instruction is always the receiving service’s deposit screen.
- Self-custody address: use the exact account address supplied by your wallet. Do not invent a tag unless that wallet explicitly displays one.
- Exchange deposit: copy both the XRP address and the destination tag exactly as shown. Some exchanges call the field “tag,” “destination tag,” or “memo”; use the XRP-specific value provided for that deposit.
- Changing deposit details: re-open the current deposit page before every transfer. Services can change addresses, tags, or network instructions.
Wrong destination address: a different problem
A missing or wrong tag is not the same as sending XRP to a wrong address. If the validated transaction went to an address that is not the intended exchange deposit address, the receiving exchange may not control that account and may be unable to recover the funds.
Contact the sending service immediately with the hash and ask whether the recipient address can be identified or whether the transaction involved an address it controls. XRP Ledger transactions are generally not reversible by a support agent after validation. Recovery depends on the owner of the destination account and applicable service policy, so do not promise yourself a refund.
Common mistakes that make recovery slower
- Providing an internal withdrawal number instead of the XRP Ledger hash.
- Reporting “sent” without checking whether the ledger result is validated.
- Failing to distinguish a missing tag from a wrong tag.
- Using a tag from an old deposit screen.
- Opening tickets through search ads, social-media direct messages, or unofficial links.
- Sharing a seed phrase or private key with someone claiming to be support.
- Submitting a second payment before the first transaction’s final state is known.
Prevent the next XRP deposit problem
- Open the recipient’s current XRP deposit page.
- Confirm that XRP and the XRP Ledger are the selected asset and network.
- Copy the destination address and tag directly; do not type either value manually.
- Compare the pasted values character by character with the deposit page.
- Send a small test amount when the service and fee structure make that practical.
- Save the withdrawal record and hash until the recipient balance is credited.
- Check the validated ledger result before closing the transfer record.
What the ledger can and cannot do
The XRP Ledger can prove whether a transaction was submitted, which account received it, how much XRP was specified, which tag was included, and whether the result validated. It cannot know which exchange customer should receive a payment sent to a shared address, reverse a validated payment at an exchange’s request, or update the exchange’s internal balance.
That division explains why the correct escalation path depends on custody. A sender controls the broadcast and withdrawal record. The ledger provides the authoritative transaction state. The receiving exchange controls customer matching, crediting, and any missing-tag recovery policy.
Bottom line
Find the TxID, verify a validated XRP Ledger result, and separate the ledger facts from the exchange’s internal status. Pending or unvalidated payments belong first with the sending service. Validated payments sent to the correct exchange address belong with the receiving exchange, whether the tag was correct, missing, or wrong. Keep precise evidence, never retry blindly, and never disclose wallet secrets.
