If your iPhone shows SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching, it is not connected to its regular cellular network. First refresh the connection by turning Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, turning it off, and restarting the iPhone. If service does not return, check the line and SIM or eSIM, update iOS and carrier settings, then ask your carrier to check coverage, outages, and account status.
What SOS, No Service, and Searching mean
Apple says SOS or SOS only means the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. In Australia, Canada, and the United States, emergency calls may still be possible through other carrier networks. The SOS indicator does not mean normal calling, texting, or cellular data is working. No Service or Searching also means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. Apple’s SOS and No Service support guide describes these status messages and troubleshooting steps.

Try these connection and software checks first
- Refresh the connection. Open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Restart the iPhone. This can prompt the phone to reconnect, but will not resolve an outage, inactive line, account restriction, or hardware fault.
- Install available updates. Connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest iOS update available for your device.
- Check carrier settings. While connected to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About. If a carrier settings update is offered, install it. A new SIM may require carrier settings for the new carrier. Menu wording can vary by iOS release and region. Apple does not specify a particular current iOS version in its troubleshooting guide.
Check that the correct line and SIM are active
Dual SIM or a missing line
Open Settings > Cellular, select the line you intend to use, and confirm it is turned on. If the line does not appear, contact your carrier to set up the eSIM or provide a physical SIM. The available setup methods depend on iPhone model, country, and region; Apple notes that some iPhone 14 and later models use eSIM only. See Apple’s guide to setting up cellular service.

If your iPhone uses a physical SIM, remove and reinsert it. If the SIM is damaged, does not fit properly, or was moved from another device, ask the carrier for a replacement. A physical SIM ejector tool may help open the tray, but this step does not apply to eSIM-only iPhones.

Ask your carrier to check the network and account
Your carrier can see account and network details that are not available in iPhone settings. Ask it to check:
- Whether your account is active and in good standing, and whether the plan is set up correctly.
- Whether you are in a coverage area and whether there is a local outage.
- Whether the phone is blocked or barred from cellular service.
- If the iPhone was bought in another country or region, whether local rules require IMEI registration.
Apple notes that only the wireless carrier can access and manage account details. Its support guide does not rank these causes by likelihood, so the pattern alone cannot identify which one applies.

If the problem happens while traveling
For a roaming line, check that Data Roaming is enabled for the intended line under Settings > Cellular (or the equivalent wording in your region) > Cellular Data Options. If the date or time is wrong after arrival, set it to update automatically. Apple’s international roaming guide also recommends turning Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, turning it off, and allowing the iPhone to select a network. If service remains unavailable, contact your carrier or ask whether trying a different SIM is appropriate. Roaming availability and charges depend on your carrier and plan; confirm the terms with the carrier.
Consider older network compatibility or device service
Apple advises users with an iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, or earlier that shows No Service to contact their carrier about options. For iPhone 6 or later, its guide directs users to update the software and check LTE settings. Apple says devices that support 5G networks are not affected by the phase-out of 3G networks, so a 3G retirement should not be assumed to explain a problem on a newer iPhone.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
If the carrier rules out account and network causes but suspects a device fault, Apple says service may be needed. On supported iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of a device issue.
