To check the security patch installed on your ZTE phone, open Settings > About phone > Android version and read the Android security update date. To check whether a newer system update is being offered, open Settings > System > System update and follow the prompts. These are separate checks: one shows the installed patch date; the other asks whether an update is available for your phone.
Find the Android security update date
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. The label or menu location may differ slightly by model.
- Tap Android version, then find Android security update and note the date.
Google’s Android instructions say this screen also lists the Android version, Google Play system update, and build number. The Android security update date and Google Play system update are separate entries; do not treat one as the other. Google’s guide to checking and updating your Android version describes the generic path and these entries.

Check whether your ZTE phone is being offered an update
- Return to Settings.
- Open System > System update.
- Tap the on-screen option to check or query for a new version, then follow any instructions shown.
ZTE’s general support guidance identifies System update as the place to query for a new version and says its update-notification function can alert you when one is available. Google’s generic Android instructions may instead show System > Software updates; wording varies with the handset’s model and software version. See ZTE’s support FAQ.

A message that no update is available means the phone is not being offered one in that check. It does not establish that every ZTE phone is current or that a newer update will never arrive. Android says update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier.

If an update is offered
Read the phone’s instructions and follow its prompts for an internet connection and installation. Back up important data before upgrading: ZTE recommends backing up handset data in advance to help prevent it from being cleared during an upgrade. ZTE’s support guidance describes online updates through Settings and says offline packages are available through its official mobile-phone service site.
For an offline update, use only a package and instructions intended for your exact device. A ZTE brand name alone does not establish that a firmware file is compatible with your model.

If the menu or update result is different
- You cannot find the menu: Look in Settings for About phone and for a system or software update option. Names and locations can differ; do not assume another ZTE model uses the same path.
- No update is offered: Note the date under Android security update, then ask ZTE or your carrier about timing for your exact phone. Timing can vary by model, manufacturer, and carrier.
- The download or installation fails: Follow the phone’s prompts and manufacturer guidance. Avoid generic or third-party firmware files if compatibility with the exact handset is not established.
- You need model-specific instructions: Use ZTE’s official support portal, select your country or region, and look up the phone’s product support, downloads, or user guide.
