If your iPhone shows SOS, No Service or Searching, it is not connected to your normal cellular network. If the status bar still shows service but calls fail or drop, check the location, call settings and carrier instead. Start with the steps below, then contact your carrier if the problem persists.
What SOS, No Service and Searching mean
SOS means the iPhone is not connected to its own cellular network. Emergency calls through other carriers may still be possible in Australia, Canada and the United States; do not assume that option is available everywhere. No Service or Searching means the phone is not connected to a cellular network. Apple explains these status messages and troubleshooting steps.

If calls are failing while the phone shows a cellular connection, use the call-specific checks below. Missed incoming calls and calls that disconnect mid-conversation are different symptoms: settings such as Silence Unknown Callers can affect whether some incoming calls ring, but they are not established causes of calls dropping during a conversation.

If the iPhone shows SOS, No Service or Searching
- Toggle Airplane Mode. If it is safe and appropriate to interrupt connectivity, open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Give the iPhone a moment to reconnect.
- Restart the iPhone. If service does not return after the toggle, restart the device and check the status bar again.
- Check for carrier settings and iOS updates over Wi-Fi. Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier-settings update prompt. Install an update if offered. Then check Settings > General > Software Update for an available iOS update. A newly inserted SIM may require updated carrier settings.
- Verify the active line or SIM. With Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular and make sure the affected line is turned on. If you use a physical SIM and it is absent, reseat it. If the card is damaged or does not fit properly, ask your carrier for a replacement. These checks do not apply in the same way to an eSIM.
- If traveling, check data roaming. Open Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data) > Cellular Data Options and check the roaming setting. Whether to enable roaming and what it may cost depends on your carrier and plan; confirm those terms with the carrier before relying on it.
If those steps do not restore service, contact your carrier. Ask it to check local coverage and outages, account status, blocks, whether your plan and line are set up correctly, and any network-side call errors. Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage account details.

If calls fail or drop while service is showing
Check whether the problem follows your location
Try a call from another location. If calls work elsewhere, that helps identify a localized coverage issue; if they fail in multiple places, the carrier can check for wider network or account problems. For a call-failure troubleshooting toggle, Apple recommends turning Airplane Mode on and off after five seconds. If the status bar instead says SOS, No Service or Searching, use the longer 15-second toggle described above.
Check settings when incoming calls do not ring
If the issue is missed or incoming calls rather than a call disconnecting mid-conversation, review Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb, blocked contacts, Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Forwarding, and Settings > Apps > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. Menu labels or paths can vary by iOS version. These checks address call filtering, forwarding or silencing; they do not establish why a call dropped.

Reset network settings only after simpler checks
If the location, basic reconnection and relevant call-setting checks do not help, you can reset network settings: go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and preferred networks, along with previously used VPN and APN settings, so you will need to set up affected connections again. Apple includes this as a later troubleshooting step in its call-failure guidance.

Wi-Fi Calling can route calls over Wi-Fi where cellular coverage is limited or absent, provided your carrier supports the feature. It is not a guarantee that every Wi-Fi network will work. To set it up, open Settings > Cellular, choose the line if you use multiple SIMs, tap Wi-Fi Calling, turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone, then tap Enable. You may be asked to enter or confirm an address for emergency services. Check your carrier’s support and make sure the iPhone software is current. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions.

If setup fails, restart the iPhone, try another Wi-Fi network, and toggle Wi-Fi Calling off and on. Resetting network settings is a later option, with the saved-network and VPN/APN consequences described above. For emergency calls, follow the information presented by your carrier and iPhone; Wi-Fi Calling availability and emergency-call handling depend on carrier and location.

If your carrier rules out an account, plan or network problem and the iPhone still cannot connect or maintain calls, the phone may need inspection. The symptoms alone do not identify a particular hardware fault. Apple says diagnostics are available through the latest Apple Support app for iPhone models running iOS 18 or later; you can also contact Apple Support to discuss service options.
