Platinum vs. Earth-Abundant Cocatalysts for Solar Hydrogen Production

Platinum is a hydrogen-evolution benchmark, but no earth-abundant cocatalyst is a universal replacement. Compare candidates by matched activity, stability, compatibility and what the experiment actually demonstrates.

Platinum is a widely used reference cocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, but the evidence does not establish a single earth-abundant material that replaces it across all solar-hydrogen systems. Molybdenum disulfide and nickel–cobalt systems are among the alternatives under study; their performance depends on the semiconductor, reaction conditions, loading and test protocol. A strong hydrogen-evolution result is not, by itself, proof of complete water splitting or a practical solar-fuel process.

What photocatalytic solar hydrogen means

In photocatalytic water splitting, light excites a semiconductor, whose charge carriers drive chemical reactions. Producing hydrogen is one part of the task: the hydrogen-evolution half-reaction consumes electrons. Complete overall water splitting must also produce oxygen through the corresponding oxidation reaction, in the required stoichiometry, without relying on a sacrificial reagent to take the place of water oxidation. A review in Nature Reviews Methods Primers (2023) describes photocatalytic water splitting as semiconductor photocatalysis that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using light, and notes that rigor and reproducibility in data collection and analysis have hindered progress.

That distinction matters when reading catalyst claims. A cocatalyst can improve a reaction at the semiconductor surface, but a hydrogen-only test does not establish that the full light-driven water-splitting system works. Nor does a laboratory demonstration alone establish an efficient, durable or economical solar-hydrogen production process.

Why platinum is a reference point

Platinum is widely used as a hydrogen-evolution cocatalyst reference, and platinum alloys are described as especially active in a broad review of electrocatalysis in Nature Reviews Chemistry (2018). This makes platinum a useful benchmark when researchers ask how effectively a candidate promotes hydrogen production under a defined set of conditions.

A benchmark is not a universal verdict. The review discusses electrocatalysis broadly, so it frames catalyst comparisons but does not prove that platinum has the same ranking in every semiconductor-based photocatalytic architecture. Activity depends on the assembled system and on how it is measured—not simply on the identity of the catalyst material.

Earth-abundant candidates: examples, not universal replacements

Molybdenum disulfide

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is one earth-abundant alternative explored for hydrogen evolution. Its presence in the literature shows that researchers are investigating ways to reduce reliance on precious materials; it does not establish that MoS2 will outperform platinum, or match it, in every photocatalyst and reaction configuration.

Nickel–cobalt systems

Nickel–cobalt catalyst systems are another research direction identified in the same broad review. As with MoS2, a material name alone is not enough to predict performance: composition, loading, semiconductor pairing and operating conditions all matter.

The evidence supports describing these candidates as efforts to match or exceed platinum-group activity in particular systems. It does not support a universal winner or a directly comparable platinum-versus-alternative performance or cost statistic.

How to compare cocatalysts fairly

A useful comparison asks whether the systems were tested on comparable terms. Look for the following details before treating an activity ranking as decisive:

  • Matched activity conditions: Compare hydrogen-evolution activity only when illumination, reaction conditions, measurement method and other relevant test parameters are sufficiently aligned.
  • Semiconductor and reactor compatibility: A cocatalyst’s performance is a property of its pairing with the semiconductor and the wider reaction configuration, not an isolated elemental label.
  • Loading and composition: The amount of cocatalyst and, for mixed or alloyed materials, its composition can affect the result. Comparisons that change these variables may not isolate the material’s effect.
  • Stability under illumination and reaction: Initial activity does not establish that a material retains performance over time. Stability needs to be evaluated during the relevant light exposure and reaction.
  • Abundance and cost evidence: “Earth-abundant” describes a motivation for exploring a material, not a complete cost analysis of a catalyst or a production system. The available evidence does not provide a directly comparable platinum-versus-alternative cost figure.
  • What reaction was demonstrated: Establish whether the experiment measured hydrogen evolution alone, used a sacrificial reagent, or demonstrated complete overall water splitting with hydrogen and oxygen.

These checks are especially important because activity reporting is not standardized across the field. A 2019 Nature Energy review of polymeric photocatalysts identifies inconsistent activity reporting, limited photochemical stability, incomplete mechanistic understanding, the challenge of balancing charge-carrier lifetimes with catalytic timescales, and unsustainable sacrificial reagents as outstanding issues for those systems. Those findings concern polymeric photocatalysts specifically, but they illustrate why results require careful attention to test method and scope.

From laboratory activity to a useful solar-hydrogen process

A 2025 review in Nature Reviews Materials discusses a 100 m2 photocatalyst panel reactor as a water-splitting scale-up milestone. That reported area is evidence of a demonstration, not proof of commercial readiness. The review also identifies efficiency, manufacturing, large-scale application, cost, process efficiency and societal acceptance as continuing challenges.

Moving beyond a promising catalyst therefore requires more than optimizing hydrogen evolution in a small experiment. The complete system must perform the necessary reactions, maintain performance under illumination, work at relevant scale, and address manufacturing and cost. A cocatalyst comparison is one part of that broader engineering question.

What the evidence supports

Platinum remains a useful hydrogen-evolution reference, while MoS2 and nickel–cobalt systems are examples of earth-abundant alternatives under investigation. Which performs best depends on the specific semiconductor, catalyst composition and loading, reaction, illumination and measurement protocol. No universal replacement or directly comparable cost winner is established here; and a half-reaction result should not be mistaken for complete water splitting or a commercially ready solar-hydrogen process.
