What to Do When an AI Tool Gives a Confident but Incorrect Answer

A confident AI answer is not proof. Break it into claims, check its sources, confirm important details independently, and escalate high-impact decisions to qualified people.

Do not treat a confident-sounding AI answer as proof that it is correct. Pause before sharing or acting on it, separate the response into checkable claims, and verify important facts against reliable sources. If an error could affect health, safety, money, legal rights, or public services, use an authoritative source and get qualified human review.

Why a confident answer still needs checking

Generative AI can produce fluent, coherent answers that are wrong or misleading. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT may sound confident even when it is wrong, and that its errors can include fabricated quotes, studies, citations, or references. A polished explanation—or a list of sources—does not establish that the answer is true.

There is no universal guarantee that prompting an AI to check itself, asking for citations, or reviewing its own response will eliminate errors. Treat the answer as a starting point, not as evidence.

A practical routine for checking an AI answer

  1. Pause reliance

Before forwarding, publishing, or acting on a consequential answer, stop and verify it. The more an error could affect someone, the less appropriate it is to rely on the AI response alone.

  2. Break the answer into claims

Turn a long response into specific statements you can check one by one. For example, separate a claimed date, statistic, quotation, rule, and recommendation rather than trying to judge the whole answer as a single impression.

  3. Open and inspect every cited source

Check that each source exists, is authoritative for the subject, is current enough for the claim, and actually supports what the AI says it supports. A citation that looks plausible may be fabricated or may point to a real source that does not substantiate the claim.

  4. Confirm important details independently

For key names, dates, figures, quotations, and rules, look for confirmation in a reliable source independent of the AI response. Asking the same tool again is not independent corroboration: it can repeat or reinforce the original error.

  5. Match the level of review to the consequences

For routine, reversible tasks, check the claims that matter to what you will do. For health, legal, financial, safety, or public-service decisions, consult the relevant official source or a qualified person. U.S. Department of Energy guidance recommends having a human verify the accuracy and validity of generative AI outputs; UK government guidance also warns against relying on AI for guidance or policy decisions without appropriate care.

  6. Correct the record if the answer has already been used

If you shared or acted on an error, provide the verified information to the people affected and make clear what was incorrect. If the mistake influenced a decision, contact the relevant person or organization to ask what needs to be corrected.

What reliable verification looks like

A useful source is not merely one that repeats the AI’s wording. Prefer sources with direct authority over the claim: for example, the responsible government agency for a rule, the original publication for a quotation or study, or a qualified professional for advice that depends on an individual case. Check dates when information may have changed, and distinguish what a source states from what the AI infers from it.

When sources disagree, do not resolve the conflict by choosing the answer that sounds most certain. Check whether they address the same place, time, version, or circumstances. For a high-impact question, take the disagreement to an appropriate qualified person or official source before deciding.

Build AI literacy without treating it as a guarantee

AI literacy means understanding both what generative AI can help with and where it can fail. UK government and U.S. Department of Energy guidance encourage learning about generative AI’s capabilities and limitations. That knowledge can help you recognize when an answer needs scrutiny, but it does not replace checking the facts.

There is no established universal rate for how often users encounter confident but incorrect answers, or for how reliably a particular checking routine catches them. The practical response is to verify claims in proportion to their importance and potential consequences.
