Yes: Amazon’s 2026 entry-level Kindle is described as ad-supported, with sponsored screensavers on the lock and home screens. But whether a competing e-reader is actually cheaper depends on the live US price. Recent reports disagree on the Kindle’s starting price—$149 in one and $169 in another—while Kobo’s official US prices put the Clara BW at $159.99. The Kindle’s current price therefore needs checking before calling the Kobo cheaper.
What “Kindle with ads” means
Amazon says sponsored screensavers appear on the lock and home screens of devices that include ads. That means the ads are not described as appearing over book pages. Amazon’s Learn More About Ads On Kindle and Fire Tablet help page also says an owner can remove ads with a one-time payment covering the price difference between the ad-supported and ad-free device. Amazon does not state one universal current fee; check the offer for your specific device and account.
Are Kobo e-readers cheaper than the entry Kindle?
Not at the listed prices in Kobo’s US catalog, based on the prices checked October 4, 2026. The entry Kindle price is unsettled in recent coverage: Tom’s Guide reported $149 in a hands-on article, while a separate report showed an Amazon listing at $169. Check Amazon’s live listing and the exact configuration before comparing totals.
| Reader | US price evidence | Display and notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon entry Kindle (2026) | $149 in one recent Tom’s Guide hands-on report; $169 in a separate report showing an Amazon listing. The discrepancy is unresolved. | 6-inch display, 16 GB storage, lock-screen ads, as described in recent Tom’s Guide coverage. |
| Kobo Clara BW | $159.99 on Kobo’s US catalog, checked October 4, 2026. | 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD, 16 GB, adjustable ComfortLight PRO, waterproof. |
| Kobo Clara Colour | $179.99 on Kobo’s US catalog, checked October 4, 2026. | 6-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3, 16 GB, ComfortLight PRO, waterproof. |
| NOOK GlowLight 4 | $149.99, reported by TechRepublic on August 26, 2026; current price and availability were not verified on a Barnes & Noble primary page. | 6-inch monochrome display, 32 GB, physical page buttons; EPUB/PDF sideloading through Adobe Digital Editions, according to TechRepublic. |
TechRepublic reported temporary August 26, 2026 promotions of $139.99 for the Clara BW and $159.99 for the Clara Colour. Those are past sale prices, not confirmed current offers. At $139.99, the BW would undercut a $149 Kindle, but only if that promotion is available when you buy.

Which alternative fits your reading habits?
Kobo Clara BW: monochrome reading and waterproofing
The Clara BW keeps to a monochrome screen and costs less than the Clara Colour at Kobo’s US list price. It has 16 GB of storage, ComfortLight PRO, and waterproofing. Kobo supports EPUB-family formats and built-in OverDrive/Libby borrowing in supported markets, according to TechRepublic; library access depends on your country, participating library, and available titles.
Kobo Clara Colour: color pages
The Clara Colour has a color E Ink Kaleido 3 screen and the same stated 16 GB storage, ComfortLight PRO, and waterproofing. Kobo lists it at $179.99 in the US, so it is not the cheaper choice at current list price. Color may matter for illustrated books or other content that benefits from color, but it raises the price over the BW model.

What to compare before you buy
- Live total price: Check the Kindle’s current price and configuration, the competitor’s price, and any delivery or tax differences. Sale prices can expire.
- Ads and removal: Decide whether sponsored lock- and home-screen screensavers bother you. If considering ad removal, check the one-time fee shown for your account and device.
- Screen: Compare screen size and whether you want monochrome or color E Ink.
- Water resistance and storage: The Kobo models listed here are waterproof and have 16 GB; the reported NOOK configuration has 32 GB. Match those features to how and where you read.
- Borrowing and file compatibility: Check whether your local library’s titles and lending service work with the reader, and whether your existing ebooks use supported formats. Kobo’s OverDrive/Libby support varies by market and library.
- Controls and store: Consider physical page buttons and whether you want to buy primarily through Amazon, Kobo, or Barnes & Noble.
How to make the price comparison
- Look up the live US price of the Kindle model and configuration you intend to buy; recent reports do not agree on its starting price.
- Check Kobo’s current Clara BW or Clara Colour listing, or verify NOOK price and stock directly with Barnes & Noble.
- If comparing an ad-supported Kindle with an ad-free alternative, include the Kindle ad-removal fee only if you plan to pay it; Amazon describes it as a one-time payment based on the price difference.
- Compare the resulting totals alongside screen, waterproofing, library access, formats, buttons, and store preference—not just the advertised starting prices.
