Treat the AI answer as a lead to investigate—not a deciding vote—and do not assume the expert review applies to your exact model, needs, or conditions.
What should I do when an AI recommendation conflicts with expert reviews?
- Write down the disputed claim. Make it specific: for example, “Model A lasts longer on a charge than Model B,” rather than “the AI likes Model A.” Separate measurable facts from subjective judgments such as comfort, design, or value.
- Ask the AI for the source behind that claim. Request the document, test, or data supporting it. Open the source yourself and check whether it actually supports the statement. A citation that is missing, inaccessible, or about a different product does not verify the claim.
- Inspect what the expert review tested. Look for the reviewer or publication, the testing method, conditions, product version, and publication or update date. A review may be credible but still not answer your particular question.
- Compare scope and timing. Check that both recommendations concern the same model, software version, market, use case, and conditions. A software update, revised model, new evidence, or changed price can make an older conclusion less applicable.
- Check independence and corroboration. Look for disclosed sponsorships, free products, affiliate relationships, or other material connections. Compare with additional trustworthy sources, while checking that they provide independent evidence rather than repeat the same claim.
- Decide according to the evidence and the cost of being wrong. If one claim is supported by relevant, verifiable evidence and the other is not, give more weight to the supported claim. If the evidence does not settle the conflict, leave it unresolved rather than treating confidence or a star rating as proof.
This checklist combines Federal Trade Commission guidance on evaluating reviews with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s emphasis on AI validity, reliability, transparency, and explainability. Neither agency provides a universal formula for deciding which of two conflicting recommendations is right.

Which should I trust, AI or expert reviews?
Neither deserves automatic trust. An AI response can sound certain without establishing its claim, while an “expert” label does not show that a review tested the right product under relevant conditions or disclosed its incentives. Judge the specific evidence, expertise, independence, scope, and recency behind each answer.
NIST describes its voluntary AI Risk Management Framework as a resource for managing AI risks and incorporating trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use, and evaluation. Its FAQ names qualities such as validity and reliability, safety, accountability and transparency, explainability and interpretability, privacy enhancement, security and resilience, and management of harmful bias. The framework helps frame questions about trustworthiness; it does not determine whether a particular AI answer is correct. See the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and its FAQ.

How to evaluate an expert review and other online reviews
The Federal Trade Commission recommends consulting multiple sources, including trustworthy, impartial expert reviews. Its consumer guidance says: “For years, the FTC’s main recommendation when considering reviews has been to look at a variety of sources, including well-known websites that have trustworthy and impartial expert reviews.” The advice is to assess sources, not to assume that popularity, presentation, or a professional-looking site proves independence.
- Reviewer and method: Identify who did the testing and whether the review explains how it reached its conclusion.
- Recency: Check publication and update dates, especially when products, software, or prices may have changed.
- Reviewer and platform patterns: The FTC suggests considering reviewer history and unusual bursts of reviews. These can be reasons to scrutinize a source, not proof that a review is fake.
- Disclosures: Look for sponsorship, incentives, affiliate relationships, or other connections that could affect a recommendation.
- Independent agreement: See whether other sources reached the same conclusion using their own evidence. Repeated wording or claims alone do not establish independent corroboration.
The FTC cautions consumers not to assume they can identify fake reviews just by looking. Star ratings and plausible-sounding language are therefore weak authenticity checks on their own. Its How To Evaluate Online Reviews guidance concerns online reviews; it does not rank AI systems against expert reviewers or prescribe a universal conflict-resolution process.

What FTC review rules do—and do not—tell you
The FTC’s reviews-rule Q&A says the rule took effect on October 21, 2024. The rule and the agency’s staff guidance address review-related practices, including fake and incentivized reviews and pay-to-play comparison operations. They do not certify a particular review as genuine or prove that its recommendation is accurate. The FTC also cautions that staff guidance is not definitive or comprehensive and does not provide a safe harbor. See the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule: Questions and Answers; this is general consumer information, not legal advice.

If you cannot trace a claim to relevant evidence, say that it is unverified and avoid presenting either recommendation as settled. For decisions with significant health, safety, legal, or financial consequences, verify through an appropriate primary source or consult a qualified professional before acting. This is a cautious application of NIST’s trustworthiness and safety concepts, not a domain-specific protocol set out by the cited sources.
