Choose the least expensive Xbox Game Pass plan that includes the games, devices and benefits you will actually use. In the current U.S. lineup, that means comparing Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass—not simply picking the tier with the biggest library. Check your must-play games in the live catalog and confirm the price and renewal terms shown for your account before subscribing.
Compare the four current U.S. plans
Xbox’s U.S. plan overview and comparison page describe four choices. Their catalog counts and features are what the pages showed when reviewed; they are not guarantees that a particular game will be available to you.

| Plan | Best fit | Features shown by Xbox | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Console players who want online multiplayer and a smaller included catalog. | 50+ games; online console multiplayer; in-game benefits; Rewards points; 5 hours of cloud playtime per month. | No new releases on day one. Check access to specific games and the current checkout price. |
| Premium | Players who want a larger cross-device catalog and cloud access, and can wait for select new Xbox-published games. | 200+ games; 10 hours of cloud playtime per month; online multiplayer; in-game benefits; 2x Rewards points. Select new Xbox-published games join within one year. | “Select” does not mean every new Xbox-published game. Verify the title and its availability in the catalog. |
| Ultimate | Players who want select day-one releases, the largest listed library, more cloud play and bundled memberships. | 500+ games; 15 hours of cloud playtime per month; online console multiplayer; in-game benefits; 4x Rewards points; EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. | It is the highest listed tier. Day-one access is limited to select games and excludes Call of Duty titles; count bundled services as value only if you will use them. |
| PC Game Pass | PC-first players who want a PC catalog, day-one games and EA Play. | 300+ PC games; day-one games; EA Play; in-game benefits; 2x Rewards points. | Cloud gaming is not included. Confirm each game’s platform and launcher compatibility. |
Catalog availability depends on the title, region, plan and platform, and games can leave the library. Subscription access lasts only while the subscription is active and the game remains included. Search the current Game Pass library for the exact games you intend to play before choosing by the headline count.

Choose according to how you play
1. Start with your devices
Essential, Premium and Ultimate are described as working across console, PC and supported devices; PC Game Pass is specifically PC-focused. Cloud gaming also depends on a supported device and region. If you mainly play on PC, compare PC Game Pass with the cross-device tiers only if you have a reason to use their console or cloud features.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
2. Check your must-play games
Search for each game you expect to play and confirm it is included in your candidate plan for your platform and region. A “50+,” “200+,” “300+” or “500+” catalog count does not establish that any particular title is available. The catalog can change over time.
3. Decide whether day-one access is worth paying for
Ultimate and PC Game Pass list day-one games. Xbox describes Ultimate’s day-one offer as applying to select titles and excluding Call of Duty games. Premium is different: select new Xbox-published games join within one year, rather than being included at launch. Essential does not include new releases day one. If you are happy to wait, Premium may fit better than paying for launch access you do not need.

4. Match cloud play to your actual use
The U.S. overview lists 5 monthly cloud-play hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. These allowances do not remove device or regional support requirements, so check the current terms if cloud play is central to your choice.

5. Count memberships only if you would use them
Ultimate lists EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics; PC Game Pass lists EA Play. These inclusions can matter if you already play the associated games or would otherwise use the memberships. They are not savings for a player who would leave them unused.

6. Compare the renewal price, not just an offer
The Microsoft Store listing showed U.S. prices of $13.99 per month for PC Game Pass and $22.99 per month for Ultimate, and Premium at $14.99 per month after a displayed 14-day offer. These are listing values captured in the reviewed material, not guaranteed future or account-specific rates. The reviewed official pages did not state a standard U.S. monthly price for Essential, so check your signed-in Microsoft checkout rather than relying on an estimate. The Microsoft Store listing may also differ by region, eligibility and time.
Xbox says offers can be time- and region-limited, may be restricted to new subscribers or otherwise unavailable to some customers, and renew at the then-current regular price unless canceled. Recurring billing continues until cancellation. Before accepting an offer, verify the renewal amount, billing interval, taxes and eligibility on your account. See Xbox’s comparison and terms for current conditions.

Do you need Ultimate to play online?
No—not for every online game. Essential includes online console multiplayer, and Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is available to every Xbox player. The right answer depends on the game: check its current requirements rather than assuming that every online title requires a paid Game Pass plan.
Quick decision guide
- Choose Essential if you mainly want console multiplayer and its smaller catalog covers games you want to play.
- Choose Premium if you want a larger cross-device catalog and cloud allowance, but can wait for select new Xbox-published games to arrive.
- Choose Ultimate if select day-one games, its listed memberships and the larger cloud allowance are worth the higher tier to you.
- Choose PC Game Pass if you play on PC and want its PC library, day-one games and EA Play, without needing cloud gaming.
