What to Do When an AAC App Misunderstands or Misses a Selection

A missed tap, accidental repeat, neighboring selection, and drifting cursor can have different causes. Identify the pattern, then test one suitable AAC or device setting at a time.

If an AAC app misses a tap, selects the neighboring button, activates twice, or loses a tracking cursor, first identify exactly what happened. Then test one relevant device or app setting at a time with the AAC user. A missed selection is an access problem to troubleshoot—not a communication error by the person.

Start by identifying the selection problem

Before changing settings, describe what the user intended and what the app did. These questions are a practical checklist, not a diagnostic test.

  • Did the intended button fail to activate, or did a neighboring button activate instead?
  • Did the app respond too soon, register multiple taps, scroll, or change pages unexpectedly?
  • If the user selects with eye gaze or head tracking, did the cursor drift or become inaccurate?
  • Does the problem occur on one screen or throughout the device?
  • What access method is being used: finger, stylus, eye gaze, head tracking, switch, or scanning?

The distinction matters: a missed touch, accidental repeat, crowded targets, and an unstable tracking cursor may call for different adjustments. Observe with the AAC user and involve their support team as needed.

Which iPhone or iPad touch settings might help?

On iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. Apple advises configuring preferences before turning the feature on. These system-level settings can affect touch behavior beyond the AAC app, including other essential interactions. Apple describes the feature as changing “how the screen on your device responds to taps, swipes, and other gestures.” (Apple Support: Touch Accommodations, published April 30, 2026.)

  • Hold Duration: Sets how long a press must last before the device recognizes it. Apple says a timer appears when the duration is set beyond 0.3 seconds. A longer hold may help if a touch activates before the user is ready, but may slow selection.
  • Ignore Repeat: Can treat multiple inadvertent or involuntary taps as one. Consider it when an intended selection is being registered more than once.
  • Tap Assistance: Lets the device use the initial or final touch location when a swipe-like movement occurs. Gesture Delay affects how taps and drags are interpreted.
  • Swipe Gestures: Changes swipe recognition. Its behavior depends on Hold Duration and Tap Assistance; Required Movement sets how far a finger must move before the device recognizes a swipe.

Change one relevant option at a time and check the result in the AAC app and in other interactions the user relies on. If the change makes navigation or communication harder, restore the previous setting.

Check the AAC app’s own selection controls

App-level settings can target a particular selection pattern without changing all device touch behavior. Names, availability, and exact behavior differ by app and version, so consult the current manual or help center for the AAC app in use.

The English v1.09 Dialogue AAC App User’s Guide illustrates several distinct controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Activate on Release: Activates a button when the user lifts their finger rather than when they first touch the screen. The guide describes this as allowing the finger to slide before release on the intended button.
  • Dwell Time: Sets how long the user must remain within a button area before a press is accepted. The guide gives a range of 0.1 to 5.0 seconds for that app version.
  • Release Time: Temporarily disables buttons after activation to help prevent accidental double activations. The guide also describes this control as applying to the Speech Display Bar (SDB).
  • Button Margin: Adds space around buttons. The guide lists a range of 1 to 100 points, with none as the default.

Match the control to the observed issue: release behavior may help when a finger moves across the screen before lifting; a dwell delay changes how long a selection takes; release timing addresses repeated activation; and margin changes button spacing. Longer delays can add effort and slow communication, while wider spacing can reduce the number of words visible at once. Discuss changes with the AAC user and, where helpful, their SLP or AAC/AT specialist.

When to consider a different access method

Touch is one way to select AAC items, not a requirement for everyone. ASHA describes direct selection as choosing a symbol directly, using physical touch or a generated movement or signal such as eye gaze, a joystick, trackball, or head mouse. With indirect selection, or scanning, items are presented sequentially—visually, auditorily, or tactually—and the person selects using an agreed movement, vocalization, or switch.

These approaches are not interchangeable fixes. An SLP or AAC/AT specialist can help assess what suits the person’s abilities, preferences, communication needs, and settings if direct touch remains inconsistent. OpenAAC’s access considerations also discusses touch-start and touch-release selection, hold-to-select, styluses and other selection tools, button or key access, and physical overlays with openings over buttons. These are options to explore with the user and clinician, not a guarantee that a particular aid will work.

If the selection cursor uses tracking

Follow instructions for the specific app and tracking system; hardware, calibration, and settings vary. For Speech Assistant AAC, the developer’s support page says head tracking uses the iPhone TrueDepth camera and selects a tile by holding the cursor still (dwell selection). If the cursor is jittery or inaccurate, the page recommends good lighting, keeping the face unobstructed from the camera, and adjusting sensitivity in the app’s Head Tracking settings. It says camera access is needed only for head tracking and that touch remains available when camera permission is denied. Do not assume these steps apply to another app or tracking system.

Could Voice Control or a physical aid help?

Apple’s Voice Control evaluation guidance says common app tasks should be completable by voice and voice labels should match visible labels. This does not establish that a particular AAC app exposes its communication buttons to Voice Control in a way that works for a specific user or workflow. Confirm compatibility and test the actual tasks before relying on it as an access route.

A capacitive stylus may be worth trying if the user can aim one more reliably than a finger. A keyguard or custom overlay—with openings over buttons—may help some users avoid pressing neighboring targets. Neither is a universal solution: check comfort and device, case, and layout fit, and assess the option with the AAC user and clinician. Do not assume that new hardware will fix an app or software malfunction.
