Short answer: 5G is widely available across Canada’s population, but it does not guarantee better service everywhere or a predictable speed or battery-life improvement. In the CRTC’s 2026 report, 94.3% of Canada’s population had access to 5G in 2024, compared with 99.5% for combined LTE networks. The figures are population coverage, not a measure of how much land has signal or whether a specific home, workplace or route is covered.
How widely are 5G and LTE available in Canada?
The CRTC’s Canadian Telecommunications Market Report 2026 says that in 2024, combined LTE network coverage reached 99.5% of Canada’s population, while 5G reached 94.3%. These are population-based coverage figures: they do not mean that the same share of Canada’s land area is covered, or that every person counted will have an equally strong signal indoors or while travelling.

| Area or population | 5G access reported for 2024 |
|---|---|
| Canada’s population | 94.3% (CRTC, 2026) |
| Rural population | 75.2% (CRTC, 2026) |
| People on First Nations reserves | 52.2% (CRTC, 2026) |
| Territories | No 5G coverage reported (CRTC, 2026) |
National availability therefore hides substantial regional differences. LTE remains the more broadly reported baseline in the CRTC figures, and 5G coverage is lower in rural areas and on First Nations reserves. If you live in or travel through a Territory, the CRTC’s 2026 report does not show 5G coverage there.
Check the places you actually use your phone
Coverage maps are a starting point, not a guarantee of reception at a particular address. Check the map for the provider you are considering and look separately at home, work, and regular travel routes. Buildings, terrain, distance from a cell site, network load and the provider’s specific footprint can all affect what your phone receives. A national percentage cannot answer whether your phone will work reliably on your street or on a particular road.

Is 5G faster than LTE in Canada?
It can be, but the available national figures do not support a promise that switching to 5G will make every user faster. The CRTC’s analysis of Ookla Speedtest Intelligence says Canadian mobile download speeds have had seasonal fluctuations but no real growth since 2023, despite extensive 5G rollout in the most populated markets. That is a national trend over time, not a controlled comparison of 5G and LTE connections.
Actual results depend on local network deployment, signal quality, congestion, the phone, the plan and the conditions when you test. A 5G symbol indicates a network connection; it does not by itself establish the speed you will get. Compare download and upload speeds in the places and at the times that matter to you, ideally using the same phone and plan conditions.

Does 5G have lower latency than LTE?
5G technology has the potential to support responsive connections, but the CRTC’s national latency series is not a 5G-versus-LTE test and does not predict the latency of a particular app or location. The regulator reports average mobile multi-server latency of 42.0 ms in 2022, 40.0 ms in 2023, 41.1 ms in 2024 and 42.3 ms in 2025. The 2025 figure covers January through September in the underlying report. These aggregate measurements do not show that one generation delivers lower latency for every Canadian user.

Which is more reliable: 5G or LTE?
There is no universal winner in the evidence available from the CRTC. The regulator reports that most surveyed Canadians consider their mobile service reliable, but rural residents are significantly less likely than the national average to say so. Lower rural coverage, short interruptions and other service-quality factors may contribute. This is a finding about reported experience, not an experimental ranking of 5G against LTE.
Reliability is local and includes more than whether a signal appears: calls, data sessions and service continuity matter too. Consider the provider’s coverage where you spend time, then judge reliability from your own experience or from trustworthy local reports. Average national coverage cannot substitute for reception in your home, at work or on your regular routes.

Does 5G use more battery than LTE?
The Canadian sources cited here do not establish a reliable, universal battery penalty for 5G compared with LTE. There is no supported percentage that applies to all phones, and switching off 5G cannot be promised to save a predictable amount. Battery use varies with the handset, signal strength, network conditions, settings and what you do on the phone. In particular, poor or inconsistent reception can affect power use, so a result from one model or one location may not carry over to another.

If battery life is your concern, compare the behavior of your own phone under similar conditions rather than relying on a general 5G-versus-LTE claim. Your phone’s network settings may let you choose a preferred network mode, but the exact labels and available options vary by model, operating system and provider. Check the device maker’s guidance for your phone before changing settings.

How to decide between 5G and LTE
- Check local coverage. Consult the provider’s coverage map for your home, workplace and regular routes. Treat the map as an estimate, not a guarantee of indoor or uninterrupted service.
- Confirm device and plan support. Verify that your phone supports the provider’s network and that your plan includes the service you expect. Network compatibility and plan terms can differ by provider.
- Test the performance that matters. Compare download and upload speed, responsiveness, call quality and interruptions where you actually use the phone. Keep the phone and test conditions as consistent as possible.
- Assess battery on your own device. If battery life is a deciding factor, compare typical use in similar locations and conditions; do not assume a universal saving from LTE.
Mobile data use is also rising: the CRTC reports average monthly use of 8.8 GB in 2024, up from 3.7 GB in 2020. That context may matter when choosing a plan, but it does not tell you whether 5G or LTE is better for your particular connection.
