Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdware is software associated with advertising, such as unwanted ads or search redirects; spyware covertly gathers information. The categories can overlap, but an ad or tracking feature alone does not prove a device is infected. Look at what the software does, whether it was disclosed and accepted, and whether you can control or remove it.
What’s the difference between adware and spyware?
The defining difference is the software’s behavior: adware presents advertising or redirects searches, while spyware secretly collects information. CISA defines adware as “a type of software that downloads or displays unwanted ads when a user is online or redirects search requests to certain advertising websites.” It describes spyware as “a type of malware that quietly gathers a user’s sensitive information.”
| What to compare | Adware | Spyware |
|---|---|---|
| Primary behavior | Displays ads or redirects search requests. | Covertly gathers information, potentially including sensitive data. |
| Main concern | Disruptive advertising or changes to browsing. | Privacy exposure and possible exposure of accounts or personal information. |
| Consent and control | Assess whether installation and advertising were clearly disclosed and whether the user can control and uninstall it. | Secret or deceptive collection is the defining concern. |
| Can the categories overlap? | Yes. Advertising software may also track activity. | Yes. A program that gathers information covertly may also display ads. |
The word “adware” is used inconsistently, and it does not by itself establish that a program is malicious. Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications (PUAs); some PUAs may show unwanted ads without being classified as malware. Microsoft’s criteria for ad-supported software emphasize user choice and control, clear identification, a clear way to close ads, and a standard uninstall method. Targeted advertising alone is not proof of infection; consider what was disclosed and accepted and what the program actually does. Microsoft explains its potentially unwanted application criteria.
How can I tell if my computer has adware?
Look for changes you did not make, but treat them as clues rather than a diagnosis. The FTC lists possible malware symptoms such as slow or crashing performance, changed home pages or redirects, new toolbars or add-ons, unexpected pop-ups, repeated errors, disabled system tools, and messages you did not send. Microsoft also notes slow performance, changed files or desktop settings, crashes, and reduced storage among possible signs associated with an adware detection. The FTC’s malware guidance lists warning signs and response steps.

- Ads appear unexpectedly or continue after you close a page.
- Your searches or browser home page redirect to unfamiliar sites.
- Toolbars, extensions, apps, or desktop settings appear or change without your knowledge.
- The computer slows down, crashes, or shows repeated errors.
None of these symptoms confirms adware or spyware; other software or device problems can cause similar behavior. Microsoft explicitly cautions that unusual computer behavior may have non-malware causes. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files solely because they look suspicious; first check which app or extension they belong to and use trusted security guidance to investigate. Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted applications provides Windows-specific context.
Can adware steal my information?
Adware’s defining behavior is advertising or search redirection, not necessarily information theft. However, the categories can overlap: advertising software may also track activity, and software described as adware may have other behaviors. Check the program’s disclosures, permissions, installation source, and privacy controls rather than assuming either that every adware program steals information or that an advertising label makes a program safe.

Spyware is a more direct privacy warning because covert information collection is its defining feature. In intimate-partner abuse situations, stalkerware may secretly track location, activate a microphone, read messages or email, access photos and videos, or monitor online activity. It may appear under an innocuous name in device settings. Unusual battery drain, data use, overheating, or unexpected restarts can be clues, but they do not establish that monitoring software is present. The FTC describes stalkerware behaviors and safety considerations.
How do I remove adware or spyware safely?
For a suspected infection that is not connected to personal safety risks, use updated security software and follow guidance for your operating system. The FTC recommends avoiding sensitive account logins while addressing suspected malware, updating security software, running a scan, and then changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication if credentials may have been exposed. If removal is difficult, seek help from the device manufacturer, trusted technical support, or a knowledgeable person. See the FTC’s steps for recognizing and removing malware.

On Windows: review apps and browser add-ons
Microsoft’s guidance is specific to Windows, and interface details can change. Its recommended checks include downloading software only from official sources, reviewing apps by installation date, uninstalling recent apps you did not install, and removing suspicious browser add-ons. Microsoft Defender is one scanning option in its ecosystem.
- Install apps only from their official sources, and update your security software.
- Review recently installed apps, paying particular attention to ones you do not recognize or remember installing.
- Uninstall recent apps you did not install, using Windows’ standard uninstall process.
- Review your browser’s extensions or add-ons and remove ones you do not recognize or trust.
- Run a scan with trusted, updated security software and follow its instructions for detected threats.

If someone may be monitoring you
If you suspect stalkerware in an intimate-partner abuse situation, treat this as a safety issue, not ordinary device cleanup. The FTC advises against contacting an advocate or law enforcement from a potentially monitored device. Use a safer device to seek help, and consult an advocate before removing an app: changing the device may alert the person monitoring it or increase danger. The FTC’s stalkerware guidance includes safety advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are pop-up ads a sign of malware?
Pop-ups can be a reason to investigate, but they are not proof of malware. They may come from a website, a browser setting, an extension, or an unwanted application; other symptoms such as redirects or unfamiliar add-ons can help identify where to look. Do not click an alarming ad or its download prompt to “fix” the device. Close it using the browser’s controls, review extensions and recently installed apps, and run an updated security scan if the behavior persists.
