Do not sell AI stocks solely because their prices fell. First check whether your portfolio still matches the asset mix, risk level, time horizon and goals you chose before the decline. If the drop pushed AI holdings above your planned limit, rebalance systematically; if your circumstances changed, revise the plan deliberately. A falling quote does not prove a company is broken, and it does not prove a rebound is imminent.
This process is for organizing a decision, not predicting the market or providing individualized tax or investment advice. A qualified financial or tax professional can assess your specific holdings, account rules and tax position.

What a fall in AI stocks does—and does not—tell you
A price decline is information about what the market is paying today, not a complete diagnosis of a business or a reliable forecast of tomorrow’s return. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises that allocation changes should reflect your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation or goals. Its volatile-market guidance also warns against rapid decisions made without considering long-term objectives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a diversified investor, a fall can create an allocation drift. Suppose your written plan calls for 70% diversified stocks and 30% bonds. If stocks rise or bonds fall, the mix may become 76% stocks and 24% bonds. The portfolio is now riskier than intended even if every holding remains attractive. Rebalancing means restoring the chosen mix; it is not a prediction that one asset will outperform.

There is no universally correct percentage at which to sell AI shares, no guaranteed recovery period and no reliable “buy the dip” signal. The right action depends on the role the holding is supposed to play, the total exposure created by all your accounts and your ability to withstand further losses.
Step 1: Freeze the impulse and define the decision
Before placing an order, write down the facts that can change the decision. Recording them creates a short cooling-off period and prevents a headline from becoming an accidental strategy.
- Date and size of the AI-stock decline you are reacting to.
- Every affected account: taxable brokerage, individual retirement account, workplace plan and any other investment account.
- Tax status of each account and the cost basis of shares you might sell.
- Investment goal, time horizon and any cash needed in the next several years.
- Your written target allocation, single-security limit and sector or theme limit, if your plan has them.
- Any employer stock, index-fund exposure, options or other positions that add to AI-related risk.
Do not infer from a lower price that the company is fundamentally broken, or from a dramatic fall that a rebound is due. The immediate question is whether the portfolio still fits the plan, not whether you can call the next market move.
Step 2: Calculate your actual AI exposure and current weights
Use market value, not the number of shares, to calculate each position’s weight:
holding weight = current market value of holding ÷ current total portfolio value

Then aggregate exposure that is easy to miss. Add individual AI companies, sector funds, broad index funds with large technology allocations, employer stock and options where relevant. A portfolio can look diversified by ticker while still being concentrated in one theme.
Build a one-page inventory
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Holding | Name, ticker or fund, shares and current value | Shows the actual position size |
| Exposure category | AI-related, other equities, bonds, cash or other assets | Reveals overlapping theme risk |
| Account | Taxable, IRA, workplace plan or other | Determines trading and tax considerations |
| Target and limit | Planned percentage and any maximum | Creates an objective rebalancing test |
| Cost basis | Basis and holding period for taxable lots | Helps estimate consequences before a sale |
Compare the resulting percentages with the allocation you actually adopted, not a generic model portfolio. Include cash you have reserved for near-term spending when deciding how much investment risk you can tolerate.
Step 3: Decide whether your target allocation itself changed
A decline is normally a drift event, not a reason to rewrite the target. Change the target only when a real input changed: your time horizon shortened, your risk tolerance changed, your financial situation is different or your goal changed. For example, a planned home purchase may justify more readily available cash; a longer retirement horizon may support a different mix. That is a planning decision, not a reaction to a red day.
If you cannot explain the proposed target change in terms of one of those inputs, pause. Write the proposed allocation and the reason beside it. If the reason is only “AI fell,” you are probably making a market-timing decision rather than updating your plan.
Step 4: Choose a rebalancing rule you can follow
Precommit to a rule so the next decision is mechanical. Vanguard describes three common approaches:

| Rule | How it works | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar-based | Review and, when necessary, rebalance on a schedule such as annually | Simple and predictable; an annual review is practical for many investors | Drift can persist between review dates |
| Threshold-based | Act when an asset class moves a set number of percentage points from target | Responds directly to material drift | Requires monitoring and can create more trades |
| Combined | Review on a calendar and trade only when a threshold is breached | Balances consistency with control of unnecessary turnover | Requires both a schedule and a written trigger |
Vanguard illustrates a five-percentage-point trigger with a portfolio that moves from 70/30 to 76/24. Its current Digital Advisor description also documents a five-percentage-point automated trigger; eligibility, fees and availability must be verified for your account before relying on that feature. The important principle is consistency: a rule you follow is more useful than an ideal rule you abandon.
Write the rule in plain language
Specify the target percentages, the asset categories covered, the drift measurement, the review date and who is allowed to override a trade. Also state the conditions that justify changing the plan, such as a new goal or a shorter time horizon. This turns a stressful event into a checklist.
Step 5: Rebalance using the least costly method that fits
The SEC identifies three basic methods: sell overweight assets and buy underweight assets; buy only underweight assets; or redirect ongoing contributions toward underweight categories. Vanguard adds cash-flow techniques that can reduce taxes and transaction costs.
- Use incoming cash first. Direct new contributions, dividends and interest toward categories below target. This can correct drift without selling appreciated shares.
- Use taxable sales only as needed. If an AI position is above its limit, sell the smallest amount that restores the target. Review the cost basis, holding period, capital-gains consequences, transaction fees and any wash-sale or other account rules that could apply. A tax professional can calculate the individualized result.
- Choose lots deliberately. Where your brokerage permits lot selection, higher-cost-basis shares may reduce a taxable gain, but the best lot depends on your full tax picture. Do not assume a tax result from the share price alone.
- Use tax-advantaged accounts where appropriate. Rebalancing inside an IRA or another tax-advantaged account can avoid an immediate taxable sale, but withdrawals, contribution limits and plan restrictions still apply.
- Consider partial rebalancing. You do not always need to reach the exact target in one transaction. A staged move can limit taxes and costs while bringing an oversized theme back within its written limit.
- Check the order before submitting it. Confirm the security, quantity, order type, settlement details and destination asset. Keep a record of the rationale and the resulting weights.
The SEC warns that selling can create fees or tax consequences. “Cheapest” therefore means the method with the lowest overall friction for your account, not necessarily the fewest clicks.
Step 6: Restore diversification beyond the AI theme
Diversification operates at two levels. Across asset categories, combine appropriate amounts of stocks, bonds, cash equivalents and other assets. Within each category, spread exposure across companies and sectors. Owning several AI names does not remove the risk that they respond to the same valuation, regulation, supply-chain or economic shock.

Use broad exposure where it serves the plan
A broad stock allocation can reduce dependence on a handful of companies or one industry. Bonds and cash equivalents can reduce a portfolio’s sensitivity to an equity-theme drawdown, although they have their own interest-rate, credit and inflation risks. Rebalancing should restore the mix you selected, not replace one concentrated bet with another.
Interpret AI-specific scenarios carefully
Vanguard’s July 29, 2026 outlook, AI is changing the world: Should your portfolio change?, notes that today’s AI leaders may face valuation challenges. It discusses value stocks, non-U.S. developed-market equities and bonds as areas that may improve resilience in scenarios where AI succeeds more slowly or disappoints. Those are scenario observations, not a personalized allocation recommendation or a forecast of which security will win.
Ask whether each holding has a defined job: long-term growth, income, liquidity or diversification. If two funds perform the same job and carry the same theme exposure, consolidating or redirecting contributions may reduce complexity without requiring a dramatic sale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Document the next review instead of watching every tick
After trading, save a one-page record containing:
- Target percentages and maximum single-security or sector exposures.
- The rule used: calendar, threshold or combined.
- Review date and the next scheduled check.
- Accounts used and the cash-flow directions for contributions, dividends and interest.
- Tax assumptions, cost-basis notes and any professional advice received.
- The specific life changes that would justify revising the target.
Vanguard describes rebalancing as staying in sync with long-term goals, not market timing. A documented next review helps you avoid turning a long-term plan into a daily reaction to price alerts.

Manual versus automated implementation
Automation can enforce a rule, but it does not decide whether the rule still fits your life. Compare the implementation method before enabling it.
Best Value
| Consideration | Manual process | Automated process |
|---|---|---|
| Monitoring responsibility | You calculate weights and place trades | The service monitors according to its stated methodology |
| Drift trigger | Your written calendar, threshold or combined rule | The provider’s documented trigger; Vanguard cites five percentage points for its Digital Advisor description |
| Fees | Brokerage, fund and possible transaction costs | Service fee plus underlying fund and possible transaction costs; verify current terms |
| Tax handling | You choose lots and estimate consequences | Check whether the service supports tax-aware trading and which accounts are covered |
| Review and override | Full control, with a risk of inaction | Less day-to-day work, but you must review eligibility, settings and exceptions |
Do not assume an automated label means tax-free, fully diversified or suitable for every account. Read the current disclosure and confirm the trigger, eligible holdings, fees and ability to review or override trades.
AI investment-fraud checks before you act
A volatile market creates an opening for impersonation and fabricated certainty. A joint alert from the SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, the North American Securities Administrators Association and FINRA, published January 25, 2024, warns about AI-generated investment fraud, deepfake videos, fake websites and guaranteed-return claims.
- Do not treat an AI-generated video, voice message or “insider” signal as proof of a fact.
- Verify a firm’s registration and contact information through an independently located regulator or official source, not a link supplied in a message.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed high returns, urgent payment requests and claims that an algorithm cannot lose.
- Do not use AI-generated information to predict a security’s price or the market’s direction.
- Never share brokerage credentials, one-time codes or remote access because a caller claims to be an adviser.
The regulators’ caution is direct: “Be cautious about using AI-generated information to make investment decisions or to attempt to predict changes in the stock market’s direction or in the price of a security.”

When professional help is warranted
Consider individual advice when a sale could create a large taxable gain, your portfolio includes concentrated employer stock or options, you need the money soon, several accounts interact, or a major life event changed your objectives. An adviser or tax professional can model consequences that a generic rebalancing rule cannot. Bring the inventory, target allocation, cost basis and cash-flow needs so the discussion is specific.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I sell all my AI stocks after a crash?
No. A decline alone is not a sufficient reason to abandon a long-term allocation. Measure total exposure, compare it with your written limits and sell only the amount needed to restore a suitable plan after considering taxes and costs.
What should I buy if AI stocks fall?
There is no universally correct replacement. Direct new money toward the underweight asset categories in your plan; those may include diversified equities, bonds or cash equivalents, depending on your target allocation and circumstances.
How often should I rebalance?
Use a precommitted calendar, threshold or combined rule. Vanguard says an annual review is practical for many investors; a threshold such as five percentage points can trigger action when drift becomes material.
Can an AI tool tell me when to buy or sell?
Do not rely on AI-generated predictions of a security’s price or market direction. Regulators warn that deepfakes, fake websites and guaranteed-return claims are used in investment fraud.
