Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows 11’s Start menu looks different after an update but still opens, check Settings > Personalization > Start before treating it as a fault: Microsoft is gradually rolling out a redesigned menu and its options can vary by device. If Start will not open—or Explorer, the taskbar, Settings, or Search are also failing—treat that as a separate troubleshooting problem and check your Windows version and update history.
First, decide whether the menu changed or stopped working
| What you see | What it suggests | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Start opens, but its layout, sections, or labels look different | A feature or staged redesign may have reached your device. | Inspect the Start options available under Settings > Personalization > Start. |
| Start will not open, or Explorer, the taskbar, Settings, or Search also malfunction | This is a shell or system failure, not merely a layout change. A documented XAML package-registration issue is one possibility on some managed systems. | Check your Windows version, recent update, and whether the PC is enterprise-managed or virtualized. |
If Start opens but looks different
Microsoft has documented a redesigned Start menu rolling out gradually. In its February 24, 2026 release notes, Microsoft said the redesign was continuing to reach more Windows devices; a rollout does not mean every eligible PC receives the same change at the same time. Read Microsoft’s February 24, 2026 notes.
Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview notes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 describe further Start options: small, large, or automatic sizing; controls to show or hide Pinned, Recommended, and All; and an option to hide the account name and profile image. In this experience, Recommended is renamed Recent. The notes describe gradual availability, so do not expect every option or label on every device. See Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 release notes.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Review the controls shown on your PC. Adjust section visibility, sizing, or account display only if those controls are present.
- If you do not see the options described in Microsoft’s notes, do not assume they are missing because of a fault; the rollout is staged and availability varies by device.
If Start will not open or other Windows shell features fail
Record the Windows version and recent update information before trying fixes intended for a particular release. Open Settings > System > About, or type winver in Search and open the result. Version matters: Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is available only on select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update to earlier Windows 11 devices. The date alone does not establish which version a PC runs. Check Microsoft’s 26H1 update-history page.

Check whether the documented managed-device issue fits
Microsoft’s KB5072911 describes a specific issue in which Start and other XAML-dependent apps may fail to start or close unexpectedly. Reported symptoms can include Explorer crashes or a black screen, a missing taskbar, and problems with Settings or Search. Microsoft attributes this issue to XAML dependency packages not registering in time after updates. It primarily affected a limited number of enterprise or managed environments, particularly where updates were installed before a user’s first sign-in or on non-persistent virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Microsoft says it is very unlikely on personal devices used by individuals. Read the KB5072911 support article.
This is a scoped explanation, not a diagnosis for every PC with a broken Start menu. If your device is personally used and does not match the managed or virtualized circumstances, the cited issue may not explain the failure.

Install the applicable current Windows update
Microsoft says updates released beginning June 23, 2026 address the KB5072911 XAML registration issue, with the fix rolling out gradually, and recommends installing the latest update. For that specific issue, follow your organization’s update process if the PC is managed. On a personal PC, use Windows Update and check whether an applicable update is available; the article does not establish that this fix resolves unrelated Start failures.
Leave package-registration commands to IT administrators
KB5072911 includes manual Appx package-registration commands for IT administrators managing enterprise or virtualized systems. Those commands are not routine first-line advice for a home PC or for a Start menu that merely looks different. If you use a managed device and the symptoms match, contact your IT administrator rather than running administrative commands yourself.

Should you uninstall the update?
Not as a default response to any Start menu change. A new appearance calls for checking the available personalization controls, while a failure to open needs version- and symptom-specific diagnosis. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish that rolling back an update is a universal fix for either situation.
