Google Messages RCS adds richer media, typing indicators, read receipts, and enhanced group chats; SMS is simpler carrier texting that can serve as a fallback. Eligible RCS chats can be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), but SMS/MMS are not. Check the lock icon in the conversation to see whether a specific chat is encrypted.
RCS and SMS use different delivery paths
RCS (Rich Communication Services) sends messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi. Depending on the service, it may use Google’s RCS infrastructure or a carrier’s. SMS/MMS use carrier messaging. RCS therefore depends on an internet connection and compatible RCS service; SMS/MMS provide a simpler carrier-based path.

Google Messages can fall back to SMS/MMS when RCS is unavailable. That can help a message reach someone whose conversation does not support RCS, but the fallback changes the features and privacy protections available.
What features does RCS add?
| Area | Google Messages RCS | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Media and files | Supports high-resolution photos and video, plus file sharing. | Does not provide the RCS feature set. |
| Conversation feedback | Can show typing indicators and read receipts. | Does not provide the RCS feature set. |
| Group chats | Offers richer group messaging and controls. | Does not provide the RCS feature set. |
| Connection | Uses mobile data or Wi-Fi and requires compatible RCS service. | Uses carrier messaging. |
Google describes these RCS capabilities and its service options in its RCS security and availability guidance and Google Messages listing. Feature availability can vary by region and carrier; a data plan may be required.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Are Google Messages RCS chats encrypted?
Some are, but RCS does not guarantee E2EE in every conversation. Google says E2EE applies automatically when the conversation is eligible: both participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled, and mobile data or Wi-Fi is available. A lock icon indicates an encrypted conversation. Google’s end-to-end encryption guidance explains eligibility and the indicator.
SMS/MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. If Google-provided RCS is not E2EE, Google says it uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) where applicable. TLS protects a connection; it is not the same as E2EE, which prevents intermediaries from reading messages while they travel between devices. Google-provided RCS messages travel through Google’s internet infrastructure and may be routed to another provider’s RCS infrastructure; some RCS is carrier-provided. See Google’s security explanation and its description of RCS routing and security.

On May 11, 2026, Apple announced that E2EE RCS was beginning to roll out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Apple said encryption is enabled by default and would be enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations. That announcement does not establish that every carrier, device, or cross-platform chat has completed rollout. Check for the lock in the individual conversation. Apple’s May 11, 2026 announcement describes the rollout conditions.

Why did an RCS message send as SMS?
RCS needs both sides to have it enabled and available, as well as a working data or Wi-Fi connection. If RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can send through SMS/MMS instead. A chat that loses RCS or data connectivity can also fall back from E2EE RCS to SMS; the fallback message is not E2EE.
- Check the compose area: Google says a “Text message” label means the message will be sent through carrier SMS/MMS.
- Check the conversation: Look for the lock icon to confirm E2EE for that chat.
- Consider the message: If it is sensitive, do not assume it is encrypted just because the conversation usually uses RCS; check the current indicator and send label.
Google documents the compose label and fallback behavior in its RCS guidance and encryption guidance.

Is RCS more reliable than SMS?
There is no evidence here for a universal reliability winner. RCS depends on data or Wi-Fi, compatible devices and apps, both participants having RCS enabled, and service availability through Google or the carrier. SMS/MMS use carrier messaging and can provide a fallback when RCS is unavailable. Google’s help pages describe those conditions, but do not publish comparative uptime, delivery-rate, or latency figures for RCS versus SMS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn practice, RCS offers more features when its requirements are met; SMS/MMS can serve as a compatibility path when they are not. If a message falls back to SMS/MMS, it no longer has E2EE.
