A failed tokenized-asset settlement is not automatically a lost asset. First establish what the blockchain actually recorded, then reconcile the trade terms, funding finality, program error and expiry state before sending anything again. A transaction can be submitted but never executed, confirmed but reverted, or completed on-chain while a wallet or indexer still shows an old balance. The safe recovery path is therefore: verify on-chain truth, stop duplicate actions, identify the exact failure, and use the protocol’s documented reclaim or recovery operation.
Start with the transaction’s on-chain state
Find the transaction hash or signature in the blockchain explorer for the network that processed the trade. Do not rely solely on a wallet notification, exchange dashboard or custodian screen. Record the hash, block or slot, timestamps, status, program error, token accounts and all balance changes before attempting a retry.

Separate the four states that are often confused
| State | What it means | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Submitted | A client broadcast a transaction, but the network has not necessarily accepted it. | Search for a hash or signature and confirm that the intended network received it. |
| Validated or included | The transaction was accepted into a block or slot. | Inspect execution logs; inclusion does not prove that the program completed successfully. |
| Executed | The instruction ran and either changed state or returned an error. | Read the program result, affected accounts and balance deltas. |
| Indexed | A wallet, application or data service has incorporated the event into its display. | Compare the application view with the explorer and allow for indexing delay. |
A confirmed transaction can still have reverted during execution. Conversely, a successful transfer may already be final while an indexer has not caught up. Treat the explorer’s execution result and account state as the source of truth, then use the application view only after it reflects that state.
Freeze the situation before you retry
Stop replacement transfers, additional release instructions and manual balance adjustments. Preserve the original transaction, escrow and custodian logs. A second attempt made before the first state is reconciled can settle twice, consume a different inventory lot or leave funds trapped in two escrows.

Verify that the trade record matches the agreement
Before funding or settling again, compare the permissionless on-chain trade record with the off-ledger contract, order ticket or custodian instruction. Solana’s DvP documentation cautions that a permissionless trade record is not proof that both parties agreed to its terms; it must be read and checked before funds are committed.
Perform this field-by-field check
- Both legal or operational parties and their intended settlement destinations.
- The mint address for each asset, including the token program or contract that controls it.
- The exact quantity for each leg and the decimals used to display it.
- The escrow or settlement accounts that will receive the assets.
- The settlement authority and every signer required by the implementation.
- The earliest permitted settlement time and the expiry time.
- Network, environment and any venue, custody or compliance restrictions.
A wrong mint, destination or authority is not a cosmetic mismatch. It can make a valid-looking instruction fail, or send an asset to an account that the intended recipient cannot use. If the on-chain record differs from the signed agreement, do not “correct” it with another transfer; have the operator cancel or unwind it under the governing procedure.
Check funding at finality, not merely at confirmation
Delivery-versus-payment requires both legs to be funded when the settle instruction executes. A transfer seen at confirmed may still be superseded. The Solana DvP guidance treats a leg as funded only when its transfer is finalized.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open each funding transfer in the explorer and verify that it is on the correct network.
- Confirm the destination token account and mint, not just the human-readable wallet address.
- Wait for
finalizedstatus on both legs. - Re-read the escrow or trade account to confirm that the recorded balances equal the required amounts.
- Only then submit
Settle, observing the earliest-settlement time.
If Settle was submitted before a funding transfer landed, the program can return LegNotFunded. In that case state should remain unchanged, and a later retry is appropriate only after both finalized transfers and the trade parameters have been rechecked.

Classify the failure instead of guessing
Read the program logs and map the error to a specific branch. The following protocol errors are common in escrow-based DvP implementations.
| Error or condition | Meaning | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
DvpExpired |
The trade’s expiry has passed. | Do not keep calling settle; use the documented reclaim, cancel or recover path. |
SettlementAuthorityMismatch |
The signer or authority does not match the trade record. | Stop and verify the configured authority and required signers. |
SettlementTooEarly |
The earliest-settlement time has not arrived. | Wait using network time, then resubmit within the valid window. |
LegNotFunded |
At least one required leg is not present in the escrow at execution. | Finalize the missing transfer and confirm the recorded amount before retrying. |
| Invalid expiry | The expiry is malformed, already elapsed or outside the program’s permitted range. | Create or amend the trade with a valid expiry under the protocol rules. |
| Zero amount | A leg contains no transferable quantity. | Correct the trade record rather than sending a zero-value funding transfer. |
| Same mint | Both DvP legs identify the same mint where distinct assets are required. | Compare the mints with the agreement and recreate the trade if necessary. |
| Signer restriction | A required signer is absent or unauthorized. | Use the documented signer set; never hand over a private key to “fix” a transaction. |
| Blocked mint extension | A token extension, hook or program policy prevents the operation. | Check extension compatibility and obtain the required compliance or transfer authorization. |
Check account and compliance conditions too
Even with a correct DvP record, settlement can fail because the recipient account was not verified, an account is frozen or paused, a transfer hook rejected the call, the source balance is insufficient, the wrong token contract was used, the transaction targeted the wrong network, or a compliance rule placed a hold on the asset. Capture the relevant account status and policy response; a generic “failed” message is not enough to choose a recovery operation.
Respect network time and expiry margins
On-chain time is not identical to the clock on a laptop, custodian server or trading desk. Solana’s program time can differ from wall-clock time by tens of seconds. Funding or settling at the exact boundary can therefore produce an early or expired result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set an operational margin before the earliest-settlement time and before expiry.
- Use the network timestamp or slot reported by the protocol, not a local countdown alone.
- When a trade is near expiry, stop automated retries and ask the operator which reclaim, cancel, reject or recover instruction is valid.
- Record the observed network time and the configured expiry in the incident log.
If expiry has passed, sending another Settle instruction will not revive the trade. Recovery rights depend on the protocol’s state machine and authority rules.

Handle partial release, timeout and custodian disagreement
Some workflows have a release phase separate from the final settlement call. If a partial release, timeout or compliance hold is reported, stop further release instructions immediately. The SEC-hosted draft describes operational states such as DVP_RELEASE_PARTIAL and SETTLEMENT_FAILED, with timeout escalation and unwind only after custodian-state verification.
Reconcile three records
- Blockchain state: inspect escrow balances, token-account owners, instruction results and finality.
- Custodian state: obtain the custodian’s position and hold statements for both assets.
- Trade state: compare the operator’s lifecycle status, release amounts, compliance holds and counterparty acknowledgements.
Do not declare an unwind complete because an application changed to “failed.” If an asset moved partially, identify exactly which account holds it and whether that movement is final. Notify the settlement operator, both counterparties and the applicable compliance or operations team with the preserved evidence.
Recover escrowed tokens deliberately
Protocols differ, but Solana DvP patterns commonly distinguish a reclaim operation before settlement from a recover operation after closure or expiry. Use only the instruction permitted by the current trade state.

After closure or expiry
When the trade is closed or expired, use Recover only if the protocol documents it for that state. Check who may invoke it, where each token will return and whether a compliance or custodian approval is required. Save the recovery transaction and wait for finality before updating internal balances.
Never send replacement funds until the first attempt’s state is reconciled. A replacement can create duplicate delivery, while an unverified recovery can leave the original escrow locked.

Build controls that prevent repeat failures
Production settlement systems need more than a single RPC endpoint and a “success” toast. Operational guidance calls for retry logic that understands idempotency, explicit confirmation handling, a priority-fee policy, RPC redundancy, monitoring and alerting, failed-trade workflows, reconciliation and customer support.
- Finality policy: define which instructions may proceed at
confirmedand requirefinalizedfor funding-dependent settlement. - Idempotency: store trade and instruction identifiers so a retry cannot create a second release.
- Clock control: calculate drift margins and stop retries near expiry.
- Observability: retain explorer links internally, execution logs, account snapshots and indexer lag measurements.
- Redundancy: monitor multiple RPC paths and alert when their views disagree.
- Reconciliation: compare on-chain balances with custodian records after every lifecycle transition.
- Exception handling: route frozen accounts, transfer hooks, compliance holds and authority mismatches to named operators.
Regulatory deadlines are local, not universal
Settlement obligations depend on the venue, asset classification, client agreement and jurisdiction. Saudi Central Bank Rulebook §25.1 says banks must closely monitor securities, commodities and foreign-exchange transactions that have failed, starting on the first day of failure. VARA provides a different example: exchange services must complete final settlement within 24 hours of execution, subject to factors outside the VASP’s control, including distributed-ledger limitations or malfunction.
Those are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal recovery deadline. Before promising a customer a completion time, check the applicable rulebook, service agreement, asset terms and documented outage or force-majeure provisions.

When evaluating an escrow or delegated-execution design, assess the operational behavior rather than only the happy-path transfer.
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Atomicity and execution model | Does the design exchange both legs atomically, or can a delegated executor release them in separate steps? |
| Reclaim and recovery | Who can reclaim before settlement, recover after expiry and authorize an unwind? |
| Finality policy | Which confirmation level is required for funding, settlement and customer notification? |
| Expiry and clock drift | How much margin is required, and what happens at the boundary? |
| Token compatibility | Are transfer hooks, frozen accounts, paused assets and other extensions supported? |
| Observability | Can operators inspect program errors, account state and indexer lag in an explorer? |
| Infrastructure resilience | Are RPC redundancy, monitoring and alerting built into the operating model? |
| Audit and reporting | Are signer actions, custodian statements and failed-trade reports retained for the required period? |
Delegation can simplify execution but introduces dependence on the delegate and may impose constraints such as one delegate per account. Escrow can make recovery explicit, yet token extensions and program dependencies still need testing. The right choice is the one whose failure states, authority rules and evidence trail are understandable before production funds are committed.
