Falling grades alone do not identify the cause or establish a diagnosis, but a persistent pattern is a reason to ask for help rather than simply wait for the student to catch up.
Start by understanding what is happening
Before proposing a fix, gather a few specific observations. Note which subjects, tasks, or skills are difficult; when the pattern began; what the student says about it; and whether attendance, mood, behavior, sleep, or health has changed. Look at recent work and teacher feedback for examples. Ask questions without blame—for example, “Which part of this assignment feels hardest?”—and listen for barriers the student may not have mentioned.

A single poor mark or a short rough patch does not prove there is a deeper problem. A recurring pattern across assignments, subjects, or time is more useful to discuss with the school than a broad label such as “not trying.”

- Which skills or learning tasks are currently causing the most difficulty?
- What supports or teaching strategies have already been tried, and what happened?
- What additional regular-education support is available and appropriate?
- Who will coordinate the support and communicate with the family?
- What information will be used to track progress, and when will it be reviewed?
Agree on an observable sign of improvement, such as more completed work in a target skill or better participation in a specific lesson. Set a check-in date rather than leaving follow-up open-ended. If progress is limited, reconvene to consider whether the strategy, its intensity, or the evaluation plan should change. School processes and timelines vary, so ask the school what applies locally.
Consider more than one possible cause
Academic difficulty can have several contributing factors at once. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) discusses learning and language difficulties, behavioral or psychological concerns, social stress, illness, and chronic medical conditions as possible factors. The U.S. Department of Education also notes that disabilities that may not be obvious can affect understanding instruction, processing information, or concentrating. These possibilities are reasons to ask what is getting in the way—not evidence that any particular student has a disability.

If struggles persist, discuss them with the student’s pediatrician, especially if there are accompanying concerns about health, sleep, mood, behavior, development, or attendance. A clinician can help consider whether a health issue, educational or psychological evaluation, or specialist referral is appropriate. Grades by themselves cannot diagnose a learning, mental-health, or medical condition.

Support should address the barrier identified, not just add more work. The U.S. Department of Education lists school-based options such as before- or after-school programs, tutoring, and mentoring. In Ireland, Department of Education and Youth guidance describes learning support and a continuum of support, with the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) helping schools with assessment, planning, and interventions. When comparing options, ask how each one fits the student’s needs:
- Target: Does it address the particular skill or barrier identified?
- Schedule and setting: Can the student access it without an unmanageable burden?
- Provider and coordination: Who will deliver it, and how will it connect with classroom instruction and family communication?
- Progress: What starting point and follow-up information will show whether it is helping?
- Access: Is it available through the school or community, and are there costs or eligibility rules?
Tutoring may be a useful supplement for some students, but it is not a universal answer and should not replace an assessment or school services that may be appropriate. Ask the school how any outside support can complement—not conflict with—the student’s classroom plan.

Ask about evaluation and formal supports in your jurisdiction
If a disability may be affecting access to education, ask the school which evaluation process applies where you live. In the United States, families can ask the district about evaluation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and about Section 504 procedures. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) sets academic goals and specifies education services and additional support; Section 504 has a separate framework for evaluating disability-related needs and considering services or accommodations. Eligibility and support depend on the applicable criteria and the student’s circumstances, so request current procedural information from the district rather than assuming a particular outcome.

In Ireland, NEPS describes a consultative, problem-solving approach involving school staff, parents, and the student to understand strengths and needs, plan interventions, and help schools monitor and review them. In either setting, ask the school to explain its process and how the student and family can participate.
Keep the student involved
Involve the student in decisions in a way that fits their age and ability to participate. Ask what feels manageable, what they think is getting in the way, and which support might help. The AAP emphasizes teamwork among family, school, and healthcare providers, with the child included when appropriate. Listening to the student can reveal practical obstacles and make it easier to tell whether a plan is working.
The AAP’s HealthyChildren.org page reports that 6.6 million U.S. public-school students, or 13% of total enrollment, received special-education services in the 2017–18 school year. That is a historical figure, not a current estimate, and it describes the scale of services rather than the likelihood that an individual student qualifies.
