Start by checking the game’s latency and packet-loss indicators, then compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection. That simple test helps distinguish a wireless problem from congestion, an ISP or router issue, or a problem farther along the route to the game. If Ethernet does not help, repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings is unlikely to solve the cause.
First, identify what kind of lag you are experiencing
“Lag” can mean several different things. This guide addresses network symptoms: high latency (the delay between your device and the game), sudden latency spikes, and packet loss (game data that fails to arrive). Low frame rates, stuttering caused by local game performance, and controller or display input lag need different troubleshooting.

If your game displays ping, latency, or packet-loss information, note those readings when the problem occurs. Record whether the issue is constant, appears at particular times, or starts when other people use the home network. A download-speed result alone does not tell you what latency or packet loss the game experiences.

Compare a quiet-network session
Pause large downloads and updates, and check whether other devices are streaming video, downloading files, or making calls. Retest when household network use is lighter. If the game improves, competing traffic may be contributing to congestion. Ofcom notes that delay or “lag” can affect online gaming as well as live services such as video calls (Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance).

Check whether the game lets you choose a nearer server
If the game offers a server or region selection, try the nearest suitable option and compare the in-game network readings. Server availability and the route your connection takes vary by game and provider; a local Wi-Fi change cannot control either one. Intel includes selecting a nearer game server among its gaming connection suggestions (Intel’s packet-loss guidance).
Use Ethernet to test whether Wi-Fi is the problem
For a stationary PC or console with an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and retest under conditions similar to your Wi-Fi test. A suitable Ethernet cable, such as Cat 6, can be used for this comparison; the needed length and routing depend on your room and setup.

Bungie calls switching to a wired connection “an important first troubleshooting step” because it can rule out Wi-Fi signal strength or stability as a cause of latency (Bungie’s connection troubleshooting guide). Ofcom also recommends Ethernet for stationary devices when a suitable port is available (Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance).

- If the problem remains over Ethernet: investigate router or modem behavior, ISP service, and the game service or connection route. Check whether other devices are affected; contact your ISP about possible ISP-level or wider infrastructure issues.
Improve Wi-Fi placement and choose a suitable band
Wi-Fi performance depends on the route between the router and the gaming device. Distance, walls, router placement, device capabilities, and interference all matter. When practical, place the router in a more open, central location and reduce avoidable obstructions between it and the console or PC. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance discusses placement and the effects of walls and distance (Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout).

Choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz based on the room
Neither band is always best. Microsoft says 5 GHz generally provides faster throughput and more non-overlapping channel choices, but has shorter range and performs less well through obstacles. A device near the router may benefit from 5 GHz; a more distant device separated by walls may have a steadier connection on 2.4 GHz. Test the supported bands separately if your router and device allow it, and compare the in-game readings from the actual playing location (Microsoft’s band guidance).
Review the Wi-Fi channel only if needed
Nearby access points can contribute to a crowded wireless environment. Microsoft’s guidance for 2.4 GHz is to choose among channels 1, 6, or 11 while considering the distribution of nearby access points. For 5 GHz, it advises choosing a channel with fewer access points for the signal strength. Router interfaces, available channels, and regulatory rules vary by location. If automatic channel selection is working well, there is no need to change it; if you do change a channel, compare results afterward rather than assuming the new setting is better (Microsoft’s channel guidance).

Test QoS against real gameplay
Some routers offer Quality of Service (QoS) settings that prioritize selected devices or traffic. Implementations differ, and prioritization cannot add capacity to an internet connection. If household traffic is heavy, test QoS both on and off while watching the game’s latency and packet-loss indicators. Intel specifically recommends evaluating the effect rather than assuming QoS will help (Intel’s packet-loss guidance).
When Wi-Fi is not the cause
If the same symptoms persist on a direct wired connection, check whether the issue affects more than one device and whether it occurs at particular times. Those clues may help when discussing the problem with your ISP. A problem limited to one game may instead involve that game’s service or connection route. Bungie advises players to contact their ISP about ISP-level and wider infrastructure issues (Bungie’s connection troubleshooting guide).

Do not assume a premium gaming router will lower ping. RTINGS’ router testing, updated June 5, 2025, found that a router could help under particular network-saturation conditions, while noting that a router cannot control every source of game latency (RTINGS’ report on gaming routers and ping). Consider equipment changes only after the wired comparison points to a specific coverage or home-network bottleneck; no particular router or mesh model is established as a fix here.
