Updates can break mods, overlays, injectors, or configuration files without damaging Steam itself. Rollback is not a universal Steam feature: it works only when the game’s developer exposes and maintains an older branch or another supported version-selection path.
Start by proving the update is the trigger
Before changing several settings at once, write down the last game version that worked, the date and time of the first failed launch, the version now shown in Steam or the game menu, and the exact symptom. Note whether the crash happens before the title screen, while loading a save, in the menu, or only after entering a match. Preserve any error text and take a screenshot.

This short timeline distinguishes an update-related regression from a coincidental driver, Windows, hardware, or background-software problem. It also gives the developer useful reproduction information. Steam Support says it automatically samples crash dumps from affected users so fixes can be added through Steam updates; support may still ask for additional tests or files.

- Describe one repeatable sequence that causes the failure.
- Keep the original error message, screenshot, save name, and mod list before making changes.
Test a clean, unmodded launch first
Disable every external modification
Temporarily remove or disable Workshop items, third-party mod loaders, shader injectors, script extenders, texture packs, and manually installed files. Also turn off overlays and injectors from recording tools, chat clients, graphics utilities, and performance monitors. Do not delete a mod immediately if you may need its version information for support; disable it or move it to a clearly named backup folder when the game’s instructions permit that.

Start the base game with no user-created content. If it now reaches the menu and runs normally, the update exposed an incompatibility rather than proving that Steam’s installation is corrupt. Check every mod’s compatibility notes for the current game version. Restore mods one at a time, or in small batches, and launch after each change. The first reintroduced item associated with the crash is your strongest lead.
Keep in mind that a clean launch does not prove a particular mod is the only cause. A combination of mods can conflict, and a mod can fail only when loading an older save. Test a new, unmodded game as well as the affected save if the title supports both.
What to do when mods are required
If your save depends on mods, do not overwrite it while troubleshooting. Make a separate backup using the game’s documented save location or in-game backup feature. Ask the mod author whether the release supports the exact game build you are running. Steam’s version-control system allows developers and mod authors to associate supported mods with particular game versions, but the association does not guarantee that every older save remains compatible.
Verify the game’s files in Steam
After the clean test, use Steam’s built-in integrity check. The current desktop path is:
- Open Library and select the affected game.
- Right-click the game (or select the gear icon) and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and any reacquisition to finish, then restart Steam and test the game once.
Steam describes verification as appropriate for missing content and crashes. It compares the local installation with the files Steam expects and can download incorrect or missing files. The operation can take several minutes, especially on a large library or a slower drive.

A report that one or more files failed to verify is not automatically proof of a broken installation. Steam notes that local configuration files may intentionally differ and are not necessarily replaced. If verification completes but the crash remains, do not repeatedly run the same scan; move to logs, rollback availability, and the surrounding system.
Check whether the developer provides a supported rollback
Look in the game’s version controls
Open the game’s Properties window and look for Betas or another version-selection control. A supported branch may be named “previous update,” an older numbered release, legacy, or a developer-specific label. Select the branch, enter an access code only when the developer publishes one through its official account or support page, and let Steam finish switching files before launching.
The exact label and availability are controlled by the developer. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes branches as the supported way to move players to an older build known to work with their mods. A branch can disappear, be temporary, or remain unsupported. A previous build also lacks fixes, balance changes, security updates, and content from the current release.
Understand the limits of rollback
There is no universal “undo last update” button for Steam games. If no developer-provided branch or version selector appears, Steam does not guarantee that an older build can be restored. Unofficial depot or manifest procedures can vary by title, require ownership and authentication, and may stop working; they are not the same as an official support path.
Before switching, check the developer’s notes for save and multiplayer consequences. An older client may be unable to open a save created by the newer build, and online services may reject a client that is out of date. Keep the current installation and saves backed up where the game’s documentation allows, and record the branch name so you can return to the current release.

Collect the right logs and crash dump
Use the game’s own support instructions
Crash-log locations and filenames differ by game, operating system, edition, and installation method. Start with the title’s official support page or inspect its installation and user-data folders only as directed there. Paradox, for example, states that a crash dump usually appears in a folder inside the game’s installation directory and that support may also request the game’s log file. That location is not a universal Steam standard.

Build a useful support bundle
- Game title, edition, platform, and exact game version.
- Operating-system version, CPU, GPU, and graphics-driver version.
- Steam client status and the date the game updated.
- Complete mod and mod-version list, including loaders and injectors.
- Time of the first failure and precise reproduction steps.
- Error text, screenshots, the relevant game log, and a crash dump when requested.
Send only files requested by the developer or Steam Support. Crash dumps can contain system or path information, so review them for personal data before posting publicly.
Repair Steam and the wider PC environment
If the unmodded game still crashes after verification, work through Steam’s client-level checks one variable at a time. Restart Steam and the computer first. Then consider the following branches:
Clear the download cache
Use Steam’s client settings to clear the download cache, sign in again if prompted, and retest. This removes cached download data; it does not provide an older game build and should not be confused with deleting the installed game.

Repair the Steam library
Use Steam’s storage or library-management settings to repair the library folder containing the game. Check that the drive has free space, that your account can read and write the library, and that the disk reports no health or file-system errors. If the game is installed on another drive, testing a different library can help separate a drive or permissions fault from a game defect.
Check download region and network-related interference
When an update repeatedly downloads incomplete or inconsistent data, Steam’s update troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another download region. A region change is a diagnostic step, not a rollback method. Restore your normal region after testing if download performance becomes worse.
Temporarily remove conflicting software
Security and monitoring software can interfere with a game or its launcher. For a controlled test, close or pause—according to the product’s safe procedure—antivirus or firewall rules, ad blockers, system cleaners, recording software, proxies, and performance boosters. Also disconnect unusual external devices if the game began failing after one was added. Re-enable protection immediately after the test and create a narrow, documented exception only if the software vendor or game developer recommends it.
Update the operating system and drivers
Install pending operating-system updates and the graphics driver recommended for your GPU. If the crash began immediately after a driver update rather than the game update, use the driver’s supported rollback process instead of changing several components simultaneously. Record each change and its result.

Follow a decision path instead of changing everything
The game works with mods disabled
Keep the clean configuration as your known-good baseline. Confirm each mod’s current-build support, update the loader and dependencies, and restore content individually. If one mod breaks the game, report the exact game version and reproduction steps to its author. If only a combination fails, document the smallest group that reproduces the crash.
The game fails before the menu with no mods
Verify files, restart Steam and the PC, and collect the game’s log or dump. Check drivers, security software, library permissions, and storage health. If a supported older branch exists, test it after preserving evidence. A branch that works strongly suggests a current-build regression, but it does not identify the defective component by itself.
The menu works but one save crashes
Do not overwrite the affected save. Test a new game, confirm the clean configuration, and check the developer’s notes for save migration or mod dependencies. A save-only failure can reflect changed content or a removed mod rather than a damaged Steam installation.
Only online play fails
Check whether the server requires the current build. A rollback that starts locally can still fail matchmaking or produce incompatible-session errors. Return to the supported current branch before multiplayer testing unless the developer explicitly operates an older compatible server.

Contact the game’s developer when the crash is reproducible in an unmodded installation, especially if a developer branch or update notice exists. Contact Steam Support when verification, library repair, cache clearing, and normal client troubleshooting do not resolve a problem that affects multiple games or prevents the client from managing the installation.
Include the support bundle rather than a vague statement that “the update broke it.” State what changed, which tests passed or failed, and whether the older branch (if available) changes the result. This prevents support from repeating steps and makes a regression easier to reproduce.
