If a sports injury keeps flaring up, arrange a fresh assessment rather than treating every episode as an isolated setback. The cause may not be what you first assumed, and the right treatment and return plan depend on what is injured. A clinician can assess the problem and help you build a tailored rehabilitation plan; this guide cannot diagnose an individual injury.
Why a recurring injury needs reassessment
Sports injuries include sprains, strains and longer-lasting problems such as tendonitis. Different injuries can produce similar symptoms but need different care, so recurring pain alone cannot identify the cause. Cleveland Clinic recommends a provider-guided treatment plan for sports injuries, and notes that tendonitis can return when a tendon is overloaded after treatment.

Seek an assessment from a qualified healthcare professional if symptoms keep coming back, persist, worsen or limit ordinary use. Ask what structure may be injured and whether an activity, training load or movement could be provoking symptoms. Those answers help distinguish a temporary flare from a problem that needs a different rehabilitation approach. Cleveland Clinic’s sports injury guidance and its tendonitis guidance describe the range of causes and the need for care suited to the condition.

Get prompt medical help for severe or worsening symptoms, marked swelling or bruising, a visible deformity, numbness, or inability to move or use the injured area. Cleveland Clinic also identifies extreme bleeding and severe pain that is not improving as reasons to seek care. The NHS lists worsening pain or swelling and numbness among emergency warning signs for sprains and strains.

Rebuild before returning to sport
Rest may help settle symptoms, but recovery can also involve restoring strength and flexibility. A clinician may recommend physical therapy and a customized exercise plan. The right exercises and timing depend on the diagnosis, so do not assume that a routine that helped someone else is appropriate for your injury.
Before returning, ask which movements and loads you need to tolerate, what to rebuild first, and what symptoms mean you should stop. Your plan should progress from ordinary movement and strength toward the tasks your sport requires. Leeds Community Healthcare NHS suggests trying elements of the target activity before returning fully—for example, light jogging before running, or running, stopping and changing direction before resuming a team sport.

Progress gradually and let symptoms guide you
Leeds Community Healthcare NHS describes no pain or swelling, with normal strength and movement, as a green-zone sign for progression. Mild discomfort or stiffness calls for caution and modification. Sharp or increasing pain, swelling that returns, or loss of movement or strength are reasons to stop and seek professional advice.
The Leeds guide gives starting at 50% effort and increasing intensity slowly—up to 10% more per week as an example—as general guidance. That is not a universal medical rule or a promise that a particular schedule is safe for every injury. Follow the progression your clinician recommends, especially if symptoms persist or the injury was serious. Leeds Community Healthcare NHS: Return to activity or sport after injury.

Ask practical questions at your appointment
Bring a clear account of when symptoms return, what activity preceded them and which everyday or sport movements are affected. Cleveland Clinic suggests asking about rest, when to resume movement, rehabilitation exercises and how to care for an injury after returning. You can also ask:
- What structure do you think is injured, and what would confirm that?
- Could a particular activity or training load be provoking the flare?
- Which movements and strength should I rebuild first?
- Which symptoms mean I should pause or stop?
- What functional steps should I complete before returning to practice and competition?
For more questions to discuss with a provider, see Cleveland Clinic’s sports injury guidance.

There is no single return-to-sport deadline
A safe timeline depends on the type and severity of injury, treatment, age, health conditions and functional recovery. Returning too soon can interrupt healing, according to Cleveland Clinic. Ask your clinician what you should be able to do before full participation rather than relying on a fixed number of days or weeks.
