In college football, Questionable does not have one universal meaning: under SEC and Big 12 pregame policies it means a 50% chance to play, while other conferences may use different categories or reporting stages. The SEC and Big 12 also define Probable as 75%, Doubtful as 25%, and Out as 0%. Those are conference policy estimates, not guarantees or measured odds for an individual player. Check the conference, report date and whether the report is midweek or gameday.
What do probable, questionable, doubtful and out mean?
For pregame reports, the SEC’s 2025–26 football regulations and the Big 12’s published definitions assign the same percentages to these four labels:

| Status | SEC pregame meaning | Big 12 pregame meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Probable | 75% chance to play; described as probable to play. | 75% chance to play. |
| Questionable | 50% chance to play; described as uncertain to play. | 50% chance to play. |
| Doubtful | 25% chance to play; described as unlikely to play. | 25% chance to play. |
| Out | 0% chance to play; will not play. | 0% chance to play. |
These percentages come from conference policy, not a published study of how often players with each label actually took the field. They are not medical assessments, independently calculated forecasts or promises about a particular game. The SEC figures are specified in its 2025–2026 Commissioner’s Regulations — Football; the Big 12 publishes its definitions on its availability page.

Does out mean the player is injured?
No. In the SEC regulations, Out is a participation status and can reflect injury, illness, suspension, eligibility or personal matters. The label alone does not identify a diagnosis or explain why the player will not participate. Do not infer a specific injury from an availability report.

Why the report stage and timestamp matter
SEC reports
For SEC conference games, the 2025–26 regulations call for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday submissions for a Saturday game, with daily updates and a final gameday report due no later than 90 minutes before the scheduled start. When a game is on another day, the reporting days shift accordingly. SEC gameday categories are Available, Game Time Decision and Out. Game Time Decision means coaches and/or medical personnel need to evaluate the player during pregame warmups; it is not simply another spelling of a midweek designation. The SEC describes its public-reporting initiative and daily updates in its announcement.
Big Ten reports in 2026
The Big Ten announced a changed process on August 28, 2026, for conference-opponent contests. Schools submit four reports per week: three days, two days and one day before kickoff, then a final report due two hours before kickoff. Midweek labels include Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out and Out (1st Half); gameday labels are Game Time Decision, Out and Out (1st Half). A player not listed on a report is considered Available under this process. The stated schedule concerns conference-opponent games, so it should not be assumed to apply to every non-conference contest. See the Big Ten announcement for the process.

Big 12 reports
The Big 12’s published pregame definitions include Available (100%), Probable (75%), Questionable (50%), Doubtful (25%) and Out (0%). Its policy also identifies Out (1st Half) for targeting suspensions. Check the conference’s current policy and report for any game-day categories or updates rather than assuming another conference’s format applies.

No universal college-football definition is established by these policies. SEC and Big 12 pregame percentages match, but the Big Ten’s 2026 process distinguishes midweek and gameday labels, and the SEC also changes categories on gameday. A label’s meaning therefore depends on the conference’s rules and the stage of the report. The NCAA material on a 2026 availability-reporting pilot concerns the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships; it does not establish a national football definition. See the NCAA basketball announcement.

How to interpret a report for a specific game
- Identify the conference and applicable season; do not assume a percentage or label transfers from another league.
- Check when the report was issued and whether it is a midweek update or the final gameday report.
- Read that conference’s definition for the exact category, including any first-half or game-time-decision label.
- Use the official report for the game to check the latest status. An earlier designation can be updated, and the report itself does not establish a diagnosis.
