If your smart lock’s battery is dead, the right way in depends on its exact model: use its mechanical key if it has one, or its documented emergency-power contacts if it does not. A 9V battery can temporarily power some locks, but it will not unlock the door by itself—you still need the model’s valid code or credential. Once inside, replace the lock’s internal batteries and confirm the door is secured.
First, identify the lock and its backup method
Check the lock’s model label, packaging, manual, or manufacturer support page before trying anything. Smart locks do not share a universal dead-battery procedure. Some have a physical keyway; some key-free models have external emergency-power contacts; other backup options may vary by product. Do not assume your lock has 9V terminals.

For example, Yale says its 9V emergency-power method does not apply to keyed models: use the physical key instead. Yale identifies mechanical key backup on Assure YRD216 and YRD226, while its Assure YRD256 instructions describe front 9V terminals. These model-specific examples are not interchangeable. Try the backup that matches your model
If the lock has a keyway
Use the key intended for that lock. Yale lists a mechanical key backup for Assure YRD216 and YRD226, and Kwikset lists a standard key for compatible products. A keyway on one model does not mean every smart lock has one. Kwikset support.

If the manual specifies external 9V emergency terminals
Use a standard 9V battery only if the exact lock’s instructions identify compatible external contacts. Hold it to the specified terminals, then use the required credential sequence. The battery provides temporary power; it does not recharge the lock, and it does not replace the code, fingerprint, app, or other credential the model requires.
- Yale Keyless Connected: The manual says to place a 9V battery on the front emergency terminal, wake the keypad, enter the registered PIN, and press
*. Read the Keyless Connected manual. - Schlage Control Smart Lock: The guide says to touch a new, high-quality alkaline 9V battery to the contacts below the bolt throw, wait for three beeps, present a valid credential, and turn the bolt throw. Read the Schlage Control guide.
- Kwikset Obsidian: Kwikset describes 9V terminals under the touchscreen; wait for the display, enter a valid user code, and wait for the bolt motor. See Kwikset’s instructions.
- Nest × Yale: Google says a 9V battery can temporarily power the lock so you can enter a passcode at the keypad. Follow the current instructions for your model’s terminal placement. Read Google’s Nest × Yale help.
These sequences are examples, not a combined procedure. Terminal location, keypad steps, beeps, and credential requirements differ by model; follow the manual for your specific lock.

Replace the internal batteries after you get inside
Open the interior battery compartment and replace the cells using the exact type, count, and chemistry specified in your lock’s manual. Yale’s general guidance directs owners to replace the internal AA batteries after using emergency power. The Yale Keyless Connected manual specifies four 1.5V alkaline AA batteries and advises against rechargeable batteries for that model; do not assume that specification applies to another lock. Relock and test the door before leaving it
After installing fresh batteries, check that the lock responds normally to a valid credential and confirm the door is locked. Schlage specifically warns that its Control lock “will remain unlocked until you change the battery and relock the door!” Follow the relocking procedure for your model rather than assuming the bolt secured itself. If the documented backup does not work
Do not force the lock or take apart a locked door based on generic instructions. Contact the manufacturer for model-specific help or call a qualified local locksmith if the documented key or emergency-power method fails. The reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal bypass.

Prevent another lockout
Replace batteries when your lock gives a low-battery warning rather than waiting for them to run flat. Warning behavior and backup options vary by model. Schlage describes its low-battery indicators in its product support article. Read Schlage’s low-battery guidance.
If choosing a lock, compare whether it has a physical keyway or key-free emergency terminals, whether a valid credential is required during emergency power, what low-battery alerts it provides, and the specified battery type and quantity. The manufacturer information cited here does not establish one best model.
