Yes. Xbox’s latest announced plans still list State of Decay 3 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with a 2027 launch window. Xbox also says it will launch day one on Game Pass, despite Undead Labs’ transition to new ownership and a new publisher. The publisher has not been named in the reviewed announcements.
What changed at Undead Labs?
On July 6, 2026, Xbox said Undead Labs had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding to complete and grow State of Decay 3. In the same restructuring announcement, Xbox said: “None of our first party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions.” That statement referred to the reductions announced at that time; it was not a permanent guarantee about every future release plan. Xbox’s July 6 update provides the context.

On September 22, 2026, Xbox said Undead Labs had transitioned on similar terms and confirmed that the game would release day one on Game Pass under a new publisher. The announcement did not name the publisher or detail the transaction terms. Xbox’s September 22 update is the more specific confirmation of the game’s status after the transition.

Can players try it before launch?
Undead Labs said closed beta playtests were planned before the end of 2026, with the program expected to expand to more players and platforms as launch approaches. A planned test is not a promise of access for everyone. Interested players can check the studio’s playtest signup page for participation information.

Does the announcement confirm a specific leadership departure?
No. Xbox’s statements describe an ownership transition and a new publisher; they do not confirm a departure by a named studio leader. The clearest evidence for players is the later platform and Game Pass information, which continues to list the release plans after the transition.
