SmartThings connection problems are a separate issue: check your Samsung account and Wi-Fi setup before resetting anything. If the refrigerator displays an error code, preserve it—do not try to clear it by unplugging the appliance or pressing controls unless Samsung directs you to do so.
First, identify which part is not working
Separate a problem with the refrigerator’s physical display or controls from a problem with the SmartThings app. A blank screen does not by itself mean the refrigerator is offline, and an app that cannot control the refrigerator does not necessarily mean the screen is faulty. Samsung’s troubleshooting differs by model and symptom.

- Screen dark, but the refrigerator otherwise appears normal: check whether the display has gone to sleep.
- Screen lit but buttons do not respond: check lock settings and applicable modes.
- SmartThings cannot find or control the appliance: check account, phone and refrigerator Wi-Fi, and setup.
- Letters, numbers, or blinking segments appear: treat them as an error code and follow the code-specific guidance.
If the refrigerator display is blank or unresponsive
Wake the screen before resetting anything
Touch the panel or open the refrigerator door. Samsung UK says temperature displays on most models illuminate for about ten seconds and then turn off to save electricity; pressing a button may wake the display. The behavior can vary by model, so a screen that goes dark again after a brief period may be operating normally.

Look for Child Lock, Control Lock, or Dispenser Lock indicators and use the unlock method for your model. On Family Hub, parental controls can restrict some apps and functions. If your refrigerator supports Sabbath mode, check whether it is enabled, since it may affect controls or display behavior. Consult the model’s manual if you cannot identify the indicator or unlock sequence.

Use only the reset procedure for your model
There is no single reset procedure that applies to every Samsung refrigerator. Samsung US directs Family Hub owners to use the screen’s power switch inside the upper-right door. For other refrigerators, its US guidance recommends disconnecting power—by unplugging the unit or switching off its circuit—for 60 seconds, then restoring it and allowing time for startup. Samsung UK describes a display-reset switch for applicable models and notes that not all models have one. Do not assume these procedures are interchangeable; check the exact model manual or support page first.
Check for signs of a wider power or installation problem
If the display stopped working immediately after refrigerator doors were removed or reattached, Samsung says a wiring harness may not have been reconnected correctly. If the interior lights are also off when the door opens, or the refrigerator is not cooling, use Samsung’s separate no-power troubleshooting path rather than treating this as a screen-only fault. A persistent panel problem after the appropriate basic checks needs Samsung support or service.

If SmartThings cannot connect to or control the refrigerator
Check the account and Wi-Fi connection
Sign in to a Samsung account in SmartThings. Samsung India’s guidance says the phone or tablet and refrigerator should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the refrigerator’s Wi-Fi icon is off, Samsung says its network connection has not been established. Check that the home network is working and that the mobile device is on the intended network before attempting setup again.
Retry registration using the app’s current setup flow
Update SmartThings, then use its device-specific prompts to add the refrigerator. Samsung’s Family Hub setup flow uses the SmartThings add-device process, Samsung account sign-in, on-screen pairing, and selection of the home Wi-Fi network. App menus and screens can change, so follow the instructions currently shown in the app rather than relying on an old menu path.

If setup fails, Samsung US recommends restarting network equipment in sequence and, if possible, trying a different network to help distinguish a home-network issue from an appliance setup problem. For Family Hub, use the control-panel power switch rather than unplugging the entire refrigerator.
Restart the app or network when a connection already exists but is not working
Samsung India suggests exiting and restarting SmartThings or disconnecting and reconnecting the router. Its troubleshooting also describes turning the refrigerator off and back on after one minute for an app that is connected but not operating. Apply that step only when appropriate for your model, and do not use it to clear an error code.

If Easy Connection fails, Samsung India identifies distance from the access point and electrical interference as possible causes; wait briefly and try again. Samsung Gulf also suggests checking the Wi-Fi password, app version, and refrigerator firmware. A Wi-Fi extender or moving the router closer is relevant only when weak signal near the refrigerator is the likely cause. It will not fix a locked panel, an account problem, an error code, or a hardware fault.

A display showing letters, numbers, or blinking segments is not simply a blank screen. Samsung US warns: “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator. Also, do not attempt any interaction with the panel to try to make the error code ‘go away.’” Samsung says those actions can make technician diagnosis and correction harder. Record the code and follow Samsung’s code-specific guide or contact support.

Family Hub owners can review current or past codes through Apps > Fridge Manager > Fridge Settings > Self Check. Use the displayed code to find the relevant guidance; do not substitute a generic screen reset for the code-specific instructions.
When to contact Samsung
Request Samsung support or service if the panel remains blank or unresponsive after the correct model-specific checks, or if a connection problem persists after account, network, and setup checks. If the refrigerator has lost interior lighting or cooling as well, follow the separate no-power troubleshooting route. Keep any displayed error code available when you contact support.
