Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a long-distance connection is slow or dropping traffic, first reproduce the problem and record the endpoints, application, protocol and port, and time. Then test the application’s actual port, inspect the route cautiously, and—if needed—compare packet captures from both ends. A failed ping or asterisks in a route trace alone do not prove that application traffic is failing.
Record the symptom before changing anything
Start with the exact action that fails, such as opening a session, transferring a file, or loading a particular service. Note the source and destination addresses, application, protocol and port if known, approximate time, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. Record what changed recently and whether the same action works at another time or over another path.

Sketch the known path between the endpoints, including routers, firewalls, inspection systems, proxies, or WAN accelerators. This helps the network team identify which devices may need to be checked. Repeat the same failing action during any test and preserve a working-period baseline where possible; measurements are more useful when they can be compared against normal behavior.

On Windows, use ping as a basic connectivity signal, not as a verdict on application health. Ping uses ICMP, which may be blocked or ignored even when the application’s TCP or UDP port is available. Microsoft recommends testing the actual listening port with a suitable tool such as Telnet or PsPing. See Microsoft’s TCP/IP troubleshooting guidance.

- If the application port is reachable but the application still stalls, investigate the application and endpoint behavior as well as the network.
For repeated measurements of a TCP endpoint, Microsoft’s PsPing supports TCP ping and latency testing. Keep the tested destination and port aligned with the application symptom; a measurement to a different service may not represent the failing path.
Use route tools as clues, not proof
Read tracert with care
On Windows, run tracert <destination> to see hops that return ICMP time-exceeded messages. Some routers do not send those replies, so asterisks at a hop do not by themselves show that the router is dropping forwarded application traffic. Microsoft documents this limitation in its tracert reference.

Interpret pathping alongside the destination result
On Windows, pathping <destination> sends repeated echo requests to intermediate routers over time and reports latency and loss based on returned packets. It can help show where response behavior changes, but intermediate routers may respond differently to diagnostic probes than to forwarded traffic. Compare the results with end-to-end application behavior and packet captures rather than treating a per-hop loss figure as conclusive evidence of forwarding loss. See Microsoft’s pathping documentation.
Compare packet captures at both endpoints
When the application still fails, capture traffic at the source and destination during the same reproduction. For TCP, compare what the source sends, what reaches the destination, and what replies return. If the source retransmits packets that are absent from the destination capture, the loss is somewhere between the endpoints. If packets arrive but the destination resets the connection, investigate the endpoint or application rather than assuming a network-path drop. Microsoft explains this approach in its TCP/IP connectivity troubleshooting guidance.

On supported Windows systems, Pktmon can capture traces, collect loss statistics, and attribute local packet drops to reasons and code locations. Microsoft recommends starting with Pktmon and, if the result is inconclusive, collecting more exhaustive netsh trace data.
When escalating, send the network team the reproduction time, source and destination addresses, protocol and port, failing application action, and captures from both ends. Ask them to compare what each endpoint sent and received and inspect intermediate devices if packets disappear between captures.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Use evidence to narrow possible causes
Packet loss can arise locally, remotely, or along the path. Microsoft lists local filtering policy, security software, low resources, ARP or neighbor-discovery failure, missing routes, and invalid packet headers among possible causes. Remote or path causes include congestion, remote policy, destination unavailability, expired state in network devices, and MTU constraints. Use endpoint captures and local drop telemetry to distinguish possibilities before changing settings. See Microsoft’s packet-loss diagnostic guidance.
Do not assume that a generic router, cable, or other hardware purchase will repair a long-distance path symptom. The appropriate fix depends on locating a specific fault; the cited Microsoft guidance supports software and command-line diagnosis, not a generally useful physical remedy.
