First check whether the handheld’s UEFI/BIOS detects the SSD. If it does not, Windows settings cannot fix the underlying detection problem: verify the drive is compatible with your exact model, then follow that device’s official service procedure or contact the manufacturer. If firmware does detect it, troubleshoot Windows separately in Disk Management or Device Manager.
Start by identifying what is missing
“The SSD isn’t showing up” can describe three different problems: the handheld firmware does not identify the physical drive, Windows sees the drive but has no usable volume to show, or Windows installation or recovery media cannot see a drive that the handheld otherwise detects. The right fix depends on which case applies.

- Check the handheld’s UEFI/BIOS storage information, if available, and note whether the SSD itself appears.
- Distinguish a missing Windows boot entry from a missing physical SSD. A drive can be detected without appearing as a boot option.
- Note whether this is a newly installed or replacement drive, or a drive that previously worked and has disappeared.
Firmware menus vary by model; some BIOS screens do not show every kind of storage device in the same place. ASUS’s general M.2 detection guidance is written for motherboards, not as a handheld-specific menu or repair guide.

If the handheld’s firmware does not detect the SSD
Confirm compatibility for the exact model
Power the handheld down fully and check its official specifications or service documentation for the supported SSD form factor and interface. Do not assume that every M.2 drive fits or works in every gaming handheld. For example, the ASUS ROG Ally service manual, first edition from June 2023, says its M.2 2230 slot does not support M.2 SATA SSDs. That limitation applies to the cited ROG Ally model, not to handhelds generally. See the ROG Ally service manual.

Inspect the installation only using the device’s own procedure
If you installed the drive, use the manufacturer’s service instructions for your exact handheld to check that it is seated and retained correctly. ASUS’s general M.2 troubleshooting recommends checking the connection and securing screw, but motherboard instructions should not be treated as directions for opening a handheld. If you are unsure about the procedure or warranty implications, contact the manufacturer or seller rather than improvising.
If an officially supported SSD remains absent from firmware after model-specific checks, stop changing Windows settings. Possible causes include poor seating, an unsupported or defective SSD, or a fault in the handheld; the symptoms alone do not identify which one. Ask the manufacturer or seller to diagnose the drive and device.

If firmware detects the SSD but Windows does not show a usable drive
Check Disk Management before changing the disk
In Windows, open Disk Management and look for the SSD. It may be present but offline, online without a drive letter, or shown as unallocated. ASUS’s SSD troubleshooting guide describes bringing an offline disk online and assigning a drive letter when appropriate.

Check Device Manager
Open Device Manager and expand Disk drives. ASUS recommends enabling a disabled disk device; if the problem persists, its guide describes uninstalling that device and restarting Windows so the system can reinstall it. These steps apply when Windows lists a disk device; they cannot make a physically absent drive appear.
Use model-supported diagnostics and updates
On supported ASUS products, MyASUS System Diagnosis may include a solid-state-disk check; its availability and interface vary by product. If Windows still starts and the drive disappeared recently, ASUS also suggests considering a restore point. Back up important files before attempting a more drastic reset.

When Windows remains usable, ASUS recommends checking for current BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers. For the Legion Go S running Windows, Lenovo’s guide gives this update path: Legion Space > Settings > Disks and Drivers > Check for Updates. Use the instructions for your own model; an update cannot reseat a loose SSD or make an incompatible drive work. See the Legion Go S Windows user guide.
If Windows installation or recovery media cannot find the drive
Treat this as a separate problem from firmware non-detection. If the SSD appears in firmware but is missing in Windows Setup, the installation environment may lack the storage driver needed for that platform. ASUS explains that some Intel systems require the matching Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver during installation. Its instructions also discuss Intel VMD settings on systems whose BIOS exposes them; disabling VMD removes RAID-array capability. Follow the exact handheld manufacturer’s guidance, and do not apply Intel IRST or VMD steps to an AMD handheld without matching instructions. See ASUS’s Windows installation drive guidance.

Steam Support describes a USB recovery route for SteamOS installation or repair. Use the recovery process supported for your device and check Steam’s current SteamOS installation and repair guidance. A USB installer or recovery drive can help with supported OS installation and repair, but it cannot fix an SSD that the handheld’s firmware does not detect.
When to contact the manufacturer or seller
Escalate rather than continuing to troubleshoot Windows if the compatible SSD is still missing from firmware after you follow the handheld’s official service procedure, a manufacturer diagnostic reports an error, or the device has physical damage or warranty considerations. A second compatible SSD or manufacturer testing may help isolate whether the fault is in the drive or the handheld; do not assume either part needs replacement before the fault is established.
