There is no official capacity rule: the right amount depends on the games and files you want to keep on the device.
What 512GB and 1TB look like on current handhelds
Major manufacturers offer both capacities in current handheld configurations. These specifications show what is available, not what every player needs.

Choose capacity based on how you play
512GB: a sensible fit for a rotating library
Consider 512GB if you usually play a few games at a time, are happy to uninstall games when you finish them, or plan to use compatible removable storage. It is a practical option, not a guarantee that a particular set of games will fit: game installations, updates, captures and other files all use space.

- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
1TB: more room to keep games installed
Choose 1TB if you want a less constrained installed library or expect to keep several larger games available without frequent storage housekeeping. This is a practical recommendation based on the capacities manufacturers offer, not an official threshold or a claim about a typical game library.
More than 1TB: check the exact device first
Consider a larger internal SSD only after confirming the handheld’s supported configurations, drive form factor and upgrade path. M.2 drives are not automatically interchangeable: Xbox lists a 2280 SSD for the named ROG XBOX Ally models, while Lenovo’s Legion Go S 8APU1 PSREF lists 2242 offerings and describes a 2280 slot. Check the documentation for your precise model before buying a replacement drive.

MicroSD expansion and SSD upgrades are different choices
MicroSD can add removable storage on devices that support it; replacing an internal SSD is a separate, model-specific option. Valve confirms microSD support across Steam Deck models, Lenovo lists a microSD card reader for the Legion Go S 8APU1, and Xbox’s product page should be checked for the exact Ally model. Those specifications do not establish that every card or game performs the same as internal SSD storage. Verify card requirements for your device and treat microSD as an expansion path, not as proof that internal and removable storage are equivalent.

A quick checklist before you buy
- Decide how many games you want installed at once, and whether you are willing to remove and reinstall games.
- Compare the exact configuration’s internal capacity, not just the handheld family name.
- If relying on a microSD card, confirm that the precise model supports it and check its card requirements.
- If planning an internal SSD upgrade, verify the supported form factor and upgrade path for that model.
- When choosing between capacities of the same model, compare the current price difference at purchase; the storage specifications alone do not establish whether an upgrade premium is worthwhile.
