Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A blank camera LCD does not automatically mean the screen is broken. First check whether the camera is sending the image to its viewfinder, stuck, or routing output through a connected cable. Then compare live view with playback and menus. If the camera’s model-specific checks do not restore the screen, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
1. Confirm the camera is powered on and responsive
Check that the camera has power and that its battery is charged. Press a button or switch modes to see whether the camera responds. If it is frozen, follow the power-cycle procedure in the manual for that exact model.

For the Nikon Z9, Nikon says to turn off an unresponsive camera and remove and reinsert its battery if it will not turn off. Removing power during recording can cause data currently being recorded to be lost; Nikon says data already recorded is not affected. Do not interrupt an active recording casually. See the Z9 manual for its procedure.
2. Check which display the camera is using
Look for a DISP, Finder/LCD, Monitor Mode, or FINDER/MONITOR control or setting, then use it to select a mode that enables the rear monitor. Controls and labels vary by camera, so use the exact model’s manual rather than assuming a button sequence. On some Nikon Z-series cameras, a “Viewfinder only” mode leaves the monitor blank. Nikon’s monitor troubleshooting guidance and Z9 manual describe model-specific display behavior.

Check the viewfinder sensor
If the camera switches between the monitor and electronic viewfinder automatically, check that the eye sensor near the viewfinder is not covered by dust, lint, an eyecup, or another obstruction. Nikon identifies debris on the sensor as one possible reason display switching may not work normally. Clean it only as the camera manual permits; do not scrape or wet the sensor. See Nikon’s Z9 manual.
3. Disconnect cables and check simple obstructions
If an A/V cable is connected for TV playback, unplug it and check the camera screen again. Some cameras route display output away from their own LCD while that cable is connected, as described in Sony’s blank-screen troubleshooting article.

- Playback and menus work, but live view is black: check the lens cap or cover, live-view selection, and the model’s lens and recording settings. This pattern does not by itself identify a specific fault.
- Playback, menus, and live view are all blank: the problem may affect more than live view, but these checks alone cannot diagnose a failed LCD panel or connector.
Sony’s camcorder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking playback and notes that no playback image may indicate an LCD malfunction. Its advice applies to the camcorders covered by that support page, not necessarily every camera.
5. Use another display only if the camera supports it
Some Sony cameras covered by Sony’s external-display instructions can send a picture to a monitor or TV over micro-HDMI. This can provide temporary access to a display; it does not repair the rear LCD. Check the exact camera’s ports, supported output, and manual before buying a cable or connecting equipment.

- Suitable for SONY A7II A7 II (ILCE-7M2)
After disconnecting the external display, some models may return to the LCD automatically. If a supported Sony camera does not, Sony’s instructions give this model-specific route: Menu → Custom Settings → FINDER/MONITOR → Monitor. Menu names and output behavior vary across models, so do not treat that path as universal.
6. Reset settings only after simpler checks
If power, display selection, sensors, and cable connections check out, a factory reset may be the next model-specific troubleshooting step. Sony includes a reset in its blank-screen guidance. A reset can erase personalized settings, so consult the camera’s instructions and record any settings you want to restore before proceeding. It cannot fix a physically damaged screen or connector.

7. Choose a workaround or seek service
| Route | When it may help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic viewfinder | The camera responds and its viewfinder works. | Whether the viewfinder provides the access you need and whether the display mode can be changed. |
| External monitor or TV | The camera supports video output and you need a temporary display. | Exact-model compatibility, available ports, and the camera manual. The cited micro-HDMI instructions are for certain Sony models only: Sony’s instructions. |
| Manufacturer or qualified repair service | Model-specific troubleshooting fails, neither display path works, or the camera shows signs of physical damage. | Warranty status and the manufacturer’s service process. The cited support guidance does not establish a diagnosis, repair price, or turnaround time. |
If the display remains blank after the relevant checks and reset, contact the camera maker or a qualified camera repair provider. Sony’s support guidance recommends service if its steps do not resolve the issue. Avoid generic disassembly instructions: the sources here do not establish a universal repair procedure, and a blank screen alone cannot tell you which component has failed.
