How to Secure Remote Access to a QNAP NAS

Avoid exposing your QNAP NAS directly to the internet. Remove port forwards, choose QVPN or restricted myQNAPcloud Link, and harden accounts and updates.

For most QNAP NAS owners, the safer default is not to expose the NAS management page or file-sharing services directly to the internet. Remove router port-forwarding and DMZ rules for the NAS, disable UPnP port forwarding, then use QVPN for a VPN connection or myQNAPcloud Link for simpler relay-based access. Keep remote access limited to people who need it, secure their accounts, and keep the NAS software updated.

1. Remove direct exposure first

Check your router for Virtual Server, NAT, DMZ, and Port Forwarding rules that point to the NAS. Disable rules that publish its management interface or file services. QNAP’s best-practice FAQ names ports 8080 and 443 as default NAS management-service ports and recommends disabling router forwards for them; do not assume those defaults apply to your device, since settings may have changed.

Also turn off UPnP port forwarding in myQNAPcloud’s Auto Router Configuration. This prevents automatic router configuration from reopening access you intended to close. QNAP describes direct DMZ or port-forwarding access as fast, but vulnerable to cyberattacks and without defense against zero-day vulnerabilities. For typical home and small-office use, avoid this approach. QNAP’s remote-access security comparison explains the tradeoffs.

2. Choose a remote-access method

Method Best fit Tradeoff
QVPN server on the NAS Frequent file access and an owner comfortable with network configuration More setup is required. QNAP lists support for multiple VPN protocols, compatibility with QuFirewall, login-failure notifications, and autoblocking.
myQNAPcloud Link Simpler setup, occasional access, or a network without an obtainable WAN IP May be slower, and QNAP notes that peak use can affect performance.
SD-WAN or site-to-site VPN equipment Remote users who need to work as if they were on the intranet Requires additional equipment and setup.
Direct DMZ or UPnP port forwarding QNAP lists speed as an advantage QNAP warns it is vulnerable to cyberattacks and lacks defense against zero-day vulnerabilities; avoid it for typical home or small-office use.

QVPN creates a VPN-based route and is the better fit when you need frequent access to many files and can manage the network configuration. myQNAPcloud Link is a relay-based option: QNAP says it routes access through myQNAPcloud servers without exposing the NAS directly to the internet. It is usually easier to set up, but can be slower. Compare QNAP’s security overview and remote-access FAQ before choosing.

#1 Best Overall
QNAP TS-216G-US 2-Bay 2.5GbE Desktop NAS
  • ARM Cortex-A55 quad-core 2.0GHz processor with 4 GB DDR4 RAM
  • Built-in NPU for AI Acceleration to boost performance for high-speed face and object recognition.
  • 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
  • Budget-friendly Home NAS for file storage and multimedia streaming
  • Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos

3. Restrict myQNAPcloud Link access

If you use Link, enable the service but keep published services disabled unless you have a specific need for one. Set Device Access Controls to Private or Customized, not Public. QNAP defines Private as access limited to your myQNAPcloud account and Customized as access for specified accounts; Public allows anybody. A SmartURL should not be treated as a secret or a substitute for access control.

QNAP’s 2022 best-practice instructions also say to register the device and enable My DDNS. Interface details can vary by QTS or QuTS hero release, so follow the guide for your installed version. See QNAP’s FAQ on remote access without port forwarding and its remote-access best practices.

Rank #2
QNAP TS-464-8G-US 4 Bay Desktop NAS
  • Quad-core Intel N5105/N5095 4-core/4-thread burst up to 2.9 GHz with 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • Dual 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
  • Dual M.2 PCIe Gen3x2 NVMe SSD slots enable cache acceleration or SSD storage pools for improved performance
  • Multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (type-A) with up to 10Gb/s transfer speeds, allowing compatibility with newer, faster USB drives/expansion enclosures for transferring large media files
  • Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos

4. Harden NAS accounts and services

  • Disable the default admin account when your platform permits it, and use a separate administrator account.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and remove accounts and applications you do not recognize or need.
  • Enable IP and account access protection. Turn on 2-Step Verification or passwordless sign-in; QNAP recommends secure login methods such as these for an extra layer of data security. See QNAP’s security guidance.
  • Disable Telnet and SSH if you do not use them. If you do need remote shell access, keep it restricted to a secure route such as your VPN rather than publishing it directly.

5. Keep the NAS patched and maintain backups

Keep QTS or QuTS hero and installed NAS applications current. QNAP recommends automatic updates and checking its security advisories. For example, an advisory released June 17, 2026 listed affected releases including QTS 5.2.7 and QuTS hero h5.2.8, with fixes including QTS 5.2.9.3499 and QuTS hero h5.2.9. This is an example from that advisory, not a universal latest-version recommendation: check your model’s support page and the firmware update screen for the release appropriate to your NAS. See QNAP security advisories.

QNAP also recommends scheduled snapshots, but snapshots are not a substitute for a separate backup: a RAID failure or an attacker with sufficient privileges may affect them. Keep an independent backup of data you cannot afford to lose. QNAP’s security page discusses snapshots and remote-access risks.

Rank #3
QNAP TR-004 4 Bay USB Type-C Direct Attached Storage (DAS) with hardware RAID (Diskless)

Configuration checklist

  1. In your router, inspect Virtual Server, NAT, DMZ, and Port Forwarding; remove rules that expose NAS management or file services.
  2. In myQNAPcloud, disable UPnP port forwarding in Auto Router Configuration.
  3. Choose one route: configure QVPN if you need VPN-based network access, or enable myQNAPcloud Link for easier relay-based access.
  4. If using Link, leave published services disabled and set Device Access Controls to Private or Customized.
  5. Harden accounts and unused services, then update QTS or QuTS hero and NAS apps.
  6. Review router rules, Link access controls, accounts, and updates periodically; maintain a separate backup.

Menu names and available settings vary by NAS model and installed QTS or QuTS hero version. Consult the model-specific documentation if a setting is missing or labeled differently.
