Keep vintage Star Wars figures away from direct sunlight, heat, damp or unstable storage areas, and materials of unknown composition. For display, use a stable enclosure and limit light exposure: UV-filtering glazing can reduce ultraviolet exposure, but it does not stop visible light from causing cumulative, usually irreversible fading and other damage. For carded figures, choose a protector that supports the card without pressing on the bubble.
Choose storage over display when preservation is the priority
Light damage accumulates over time. The Library of Congress explains that it follows the reciprocity principle: a lower light level over a longer period can still add up to damaging exposure. It also notes that conservation treatment generally cannot reverse light damage. Keep figures out of direct sunlight, reduce both ultraviolet (UV) and visible-light exposure, and avoid treating UV-filtering glazing as permission for continuous display. If you want to show a figure, use a stable enclosure, keep it out of hot window areas, and limit how long and how brightly it is lit. There is no established universally safe display duration for vintage Star Wars toys. A UV filter addresses only part of the light risk; the amount of visible light and total exposure time still matter.
Keep the storage environment stable
Choose a cool, dry indoor location with as little environmental fluctuation as practical. Avoid attics, garages, damp basements, and spots next to windows or heat sources. A sealed plastic bin cannot correct a poor storage environment, and an improvised airtight container may be unsuitable for plastics that need ventilation.

The Museums Association’s 2019 guidance for the majority of plastics recommends a dark, cool, dry room, a temperature restricted to 20°C, relative humidity of 30%–50%, and limited display. It gives a recommended maximum light range of 50–150 lux, with the specific figure depending on curator or conservator judgment. Use suitable materials around loose figures
For bags, bins, or other storage materials that touch a figure, the Library of Congress identifies polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester without added slip or coating agents as stable options. Avoid PVC and plastics you cannot identify. Keep loose figures from rubbing together, and inspect them periodically for changes. Library of Congress collection-care guidance

Protect carded figures without loading the bubble
Carded figures need support for the card while leaving the bubble free of pressure. Kenner card formats vary, including across releases and countries, so do not assume one protector fits every carded figure. Measure the card and account for the bubble’s depth; reject a fit that bends the card or presses on the blister.

Inspect for changes and handle deterioration cautiously
Check figures and carded items regularly; the Museums Association recommends checking collections at least once a year. Look for new stickiness, white crystals, cracking, discoloration, or other surface changes. If an item appears to be deteriorating, separate it from nearby objects where practical: some degrading plastics can release products that affect surrounding materials. Sticky surfaces or white crystals can be associated with plasticizer migration in some plasticized PVC. In an archived 2010 Conservation DistList discussion, Yvonne Shashoua, Senior Researcher in the Department of Conservation at the National Museum of Denmark, described this problem in many—but not all—Star Wars figures. Avoid trying to treat unidentified deterioration with heat, reshaping, re-gluing, or a one-size-fits-all cleaning method. Minimize handling and clean the outside of a protector rather than repeatedly rubbing an original surface. For an affected figure, consult a qualified plastics conservator before attempting treatment; a procedure described for one PVC problem is not a general recipe for vintage toys.
