If your webcam turns on unexpectedly, first close apps and browser tabs that may be using it, then check camera permissions for apps and websites. An indicator shows that the camera is active; by itself, it does not tell you which app started it or prove that someone is spying. If you cannot explain the activity after checking permissions and normal camera features, update your software and run a reputable malware scan.
First, stop ordinary camera activity
- Close likely camera users. Quit meeting apps, the Camera app, browser tabs, and other apps that can preview video. Check whether the indicator goes off. On a Mac, Apple says the camera turns off after all apps that can use it are closed or quit.
- Use the indicator as a signal, not an app diagnosis. Windows says a camera light turns on while the camera is active; if the device has no light, Windows displays a notification when the camera starts or stops. Apple says the built-in Mac camera’s indicator glows green when it is active. These signals indicate camera activity, but do not identify its cause.
If the light or notification stops after you close an app, that is a useful clue about what was using the camera. If activity continues or returns and you cannot account for it, review permissions next.

Review camera permissions on your device
Windows
In Windows Settings, open Privacy & security > Camera. Review the device camera access, Microsoft Store app access, and desktop app access controls. Turn off access for apps that do not need the camera, and check whether an unfamiliar app is listed.

Windows distinguishes Microsoft Store apps from desktop apps. Some desktop apps may not appear in the camera list or may access the camera through supported methods, so the list is not a complete record of every possible camera user. Also, Windows Hello may use the camera to sign you in even when the general camera-app setting is off.

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and review which apps have permission. Revoke access for apps you do not recognize or no longer use. Apple notes that built-in FaceTime and Photo Booth have automatic camera access, so they are exceptions to the ordinary app-permission list.
Check browser and website access
Microsoft Edge on Windows
In Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites. Review sites with camera access and block any site that should not use it. A permitted website may use the camera while its page is open, even if you are not actively on a video call.

Escalate if camera activity remains unexplained
- Revoke access from unfamiliar apps and websites using the relevant controls above.
- Install available operating-system and app updates.
- Run a scan with reputable anti-malware software if the activity remains unexplained. Windows Security offers quick, full, custom, and Microsoft Defender Offline scans. The Offline scan restarts the computer, so save your work before starting it.
- If this is a work-managed computer, contact your organization’s IT administrator. Managed settings and device logs may require an administrator to investigate.
An unexpected camera indicator alone does not establish that a device is compromised. Normal app use, a site permission, Windows Hello, or built-in Mac camera apps can explain activity in some cases.

Would a webcam cover help?
A physical cover blocks the view through the lens while it is in place, but it does not show which app activated the camera or prevent webcam software from attempting to turn it on. Treat it as a separate physical privacy measure, not a substitute for checking permissions or investigating unexplained activity.
On MacBooks, check fit before using a cover. Apple warns that a cover can damage some MacBook displays when the computer is closed; its guidance says a cover should be no thicker than 0.1 mm, and thicker covers should be removed before closing the laptop. For other computers, follow the device maker’s fit guidance.
