A 2018 MacBook Air can still handle everyday tasks such as browsing, email, documents, video calls and streaming if the specific computer is in good condition and its software still supports the apps you need. Its biggest drawback is that it is not compatible with Apple’s current macOS 26 or macOS 27 releases. Check the model, battery and configuration before deciding whether to keep or buy one.
First, confirm which MacBook Air you have
This advice is for the MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018), an Intel model—not the later M1 MacBook Air. On the Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to check its model and processor. Configuration varies, so verify memory and storage there or in System Information rather than assuming they match a typical launch configuration.

Apple’s launch-era test configuration had a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD; that describes the tested configuration, not every 2018 Air. Apple positioned the computer for everyday activities such as web browsing, organizing photos and creating presentations. That was the manufacturer’s description in 2018, not a current independent performance test. Apple’s 2018 announcement and technical specifications provide the model details.

For ordinary productivity—web pages, email, documents, streaming and video calls—a healthy, suitably configured 2018 Air can remain useful. Whether it feels adequate depends on the particular machine, the number and demands of apps you run, and whether your required software works on its supported macOS version.

It is a less suitable choice for workloads that involve sustained creative work, gaming or newer specialized apps. The available evidence does not establish a measured performance comparison with newer Apple-silicon MacBook Air models, so a specific speed difference should not be assumed.
The Retina display and two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which use USB-C, remain practical for compatible peripherals and charging. Older USB-A accessories may require an adapter; check compatibility for the specific charger or hub you plan to use. Apple’s specifications list the display and ports.

Its main limitation: current macOS support
Apple’s compatibility lists for macOS 26 and macOS 27 do not include the 2018 Intel MacBook Air. It therefore cannot install either release through Apple’s supported upgrade path. This matters if you need features in those versions or if an app requires a newer macOS release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat does not by itself mean the Mac receives no security updates. Apple publishes security releases for multiple macOS generations, but update availability depends on the version installed and may change. On the Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update to check what is offered for that machine. Apple recommends installing the latest macOS version compatible with the computer for security, stability and compatibility. Check Apple’s macOS 27 compatibility list, macOS 26 compatibility list, macOS update instructions and security release list for current details. Unofficial patching is not Apple-supported compatibility.

Check battery condition before relying on it
Age can matter more than the original advertised battery estimate. Apple’s October 2018 environmental report says the battery was designed for up to 1,000 full charge cycles before reaching 80 percent of its original capacity. That is a design rating, not a guarantee of present-day capacity or runtime for an individual eight-year-old computer. Apple’s report gives the rating.
Check Battery Health in macOS and ask for the cycle count, but do not judge runtime from cycle count alone. Battery capacity, any service warning and real-world runtime under your own workload also matter. Apple explains how to determine a Mac laptop’s battery cycle count. For a battery inspection or replacement estimate, consult Apple or an authorized provider; cost and availability depend on model and region.

If buying used, inspect the whole machine
Before paying, verify the exact model, memory and SSD capacity in About This Mac or System Information. Ask the seller to demonstrate battery health and cycle count, and test the computer rather than relying on a listing description.

- Test the keyboard, trackpad, Thunderbolt 3 ports, webcam, speakers, Wi-Fi and Touch ID.

Keep it, buy it or choose something newer?
Keep a 2018 Air if you already own it, its battery and hardware are satisfactory, your everyday apps run on its compatible macOS, and its limits suit your workload. It can also make sense when it will mostly stay at a desk and you do not need the latest major macOS release.
Be cautious about buying one at a premium or relying on it for long unplugged sessions without checking battery condition. If you need current macOS features, demanding sustained performance or a longer software runway, compare it with a newer used Apple-silicon Mac. Weigh supported macOS and app requirements, battery and repair condition, memory and storage, workload, price and return terms; there is no verified benchmark comparison here that can settle the choice for you.
