What to Do If Your SME Funding Application Is Rejected

A funding rejection is not a verdict on your business. Learn how to understand the decision, check review rules and compare lenders, CDFIs, Start Up Loans, equity and grants.

A rejected funding application is a decision by one provider under its own criteria—not proof that your business is unviable or that every funder will say no. Start by checking the decision and asking what drove it. Then address any fixable issues, confirm whether a review is available, and compare other routes before applying again. The right next step depends on whether you applied for a loan, grant or named scheme.

What to do first after a funding rejection

  1. Read the decision carefully. Look for reason codes, eligibility findings, requests for missing information, review instructions and any deadline. Note the decision date.
  2. Ask the provider to explain the decision. If the reason is unclear, contact the named funder and ask what the main issue was, whether information was missing, what could materially change a future decision, and whether a review or appeal is available. These are useful questions, not guaranteed rights.
  3. Identify what kind of decision it was. Separate eligibility issues from concerns about credit, repayment affordability, security, evidence or the provider’s appetite for your sector. For a grant or named programme, use that scheme’s own applicant guidance and review process; loan guidance does not establish grant rules.
  4. Decide whether anything can be improved. Correct factual errors and strengthen relevant evidence before trying again. Do not make repeated applications without checking provider terms and whether the proposed borrowing is affordable.

Why was my business funding application rejected?

The British Business Bank lists low credit ratings, insufficient security, weak business plans or financial forecasts—including cash-flow forecasts—and low lender appetite for a sector among common reasons for loan rejection. Lenders may also consider business and personal credit, trading history, existing borrowing or credit lines, and whether the proposed use of funds makes sense. These are prompts for your discussion with the provider, not a diagnosis of your application or a complete list of possible reasons. See the British Business Bank guide to a rejected loan application and its guide to applying for a business loan.

Some lenders require two years of trading, but that is not a universal rule. A decline can also reflect the provider’s own risk criteria or sector exposure. The British Business Bank notes that banks use different criteria and that a rejection may have more to do with the bank than the business. Ask which factors mattered in your case rather than assuming that a general list explains the decision.

Check the evidence behind your application

Where the provider identifies a weakness, review the relevant material before you apply elsewhere or reapply:

  • Credit: Check the business and, where relevant to the application, personal credit information for errors or issues you can address.
  • Affordability and cash flow: Revisit forecasts and existing commitments. Consider whether repayments remain manageable if income or costs differ from your expected case.
  • Plan and use of funds: Make the purpose, amount and expected business impact clear, and ensure your plan and forecasts support the request.
  • Security: Clarify what security or guarantee the provider requires and whether you can offer it. Do not assume a different lender will require the same terms.
  • Eligibility and trading record: Check the provider’s rules on business age, sector, location and applicant type against your circumstances.

Can you appeal or reapply?

There is no general appeal right, standard appeal deadline or universal waiting period established for rejected SME finance applications. Check the decision letter, product terms and provider’s current complaints or review policy before relying on a deadline.

Rules can differ even between providers. For example, bizbritain’s published complaints and appeals policy says a declined application or unacceptable terms may be appealed, typically within 30 days; it describes review by an independent decision-maker and says a new application after a decline is available six months after the original decision. bizbritain identifies itself as a credit broker, not a lender. Those terms are specific to that provider and are not rules for other lenders, grant-makers or schemes. Read its complaints and appeals policy and confirm current terms directly.

Where can you look for funding after a bank-loan rejection?

Compare routes against your eligibility, total cost, repayment obligations, security, process, evidence requirements and—if raising equity—the ownership and control you would give up. A different route may fit, but none guarantees approval.

Another lender

Providers use different criteria and risk appetites. Before applying, compare eligibility, total borrowing cost and fees, repayment schedule, security or guarantee requirements, expected process and the evidence requested. A provider that views your circumstances differently may consider an application another lender declined; approval is not assured.

Bank Referral Scheme

The British Business Bank describes a referral route for rejected applications at participating banks. Its guidance says you must agree to your details being shared and names Alternative Business Funding, Funding Options and Funding Xchange as designated platforms on the reviewed page. A referral introduces possible alternatives; it is not an approval or promise of an offer. Check current participation and process with your bank using the Bank Referral Scheme information.

Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs)

CDFIs are non-profit, relationship-focused lenders. The British Business Bank says they may look beyond a weak balance sheet or poor credit history to consider the business and the people behind it. Their loans still have to be repaid, with interest and agreed fees. The Bank gives £25,000–£250,000 as a typical range, while noting that some CDFIs lend less or more; treat this as general guidance, not a quote or a universal limit. Its guide reports that CDFIs lent £287 million to more than 90,000 businesses across the UK in 2023; that historical figure does not indicate current availability or any individual applicant’s prospects. See the Bank’s guide to alternatives after a loan rejection.

Start Up Loans

The British Business Bank’s reviewed guidance describes an option for eligible individuals whose businesses are less than 60 months old: a personal loan for business use, unsecured, with amounts of £500–£25,000, repayment over one to five years, a fixed annual interest rate of 7.5%, application guidance and 12 months of mentoring. These programme terms can change, and eligibility is not automatic. Check the official Start Up Loans programme for current conditions before applying; remember that the loan is personal even though it is used for business.

Peer-to-peer lending

Peer-to-peer lending matches businesses seeking finance with lenders through a platform or broker. You provide business and loan-purpose details; an arrangement fee may apply, and accepted loans are repaid with interest. Platform speed, eligibility and terms vary, so review the full cost and repayment conditions.

Equity investment

Angel investment or equity crowdfunding may suit some growth businesses that cannot or do not want to take on debt. In exchange for capital, you sell an ownership stake. Consider dilution, investor expectations, possible involvement in decisions and the time required to raise money. Equity is not free funding. Business.gov.uk outlines equity finance options.

Grants, regional schemes and public support

The GOV.UK Finance and support for your business finder lists finance, equity, grants, loans, expertise and other support. Filter by business stage, industry, employee count and region, then check the live criteria for each programme. The directory displayed 131 schemes when reviewed in 2026, but its count changes; a listing does not mean a scheme is open or that your business qualifies. For a grant, check the live rules for eligible costs, match funding, reporting, timing and whether spending before an award is allowed.

How to compare the options before applying

Compare like with like rather than focusing on the headline amount or speed. For debt, test repayment affordability against a weaker cash-flow scenario; for equity, weigh the capital against dilution and investor involvement; for grants, check restrictions and obligations in the scheme’s current guidance.

What to compare Questions to ask
Eligibility Does the provider accept your business stage, sector, location and applicant type?
Total cost For borrowing, what are the interest, fees and total repayment? For equity, what ownership and control are exchanged for the investment?
Repayment or obligations Can the business meet the repayment schedule under less favourable cash-flow conditions? For a grant, what spending, reporting or other conditions apply?
Security Is collateral, a personal guarantee or another form of security required?
Process and evidence How long may the process take, what documents are required, and how certain is the timing?
Restrictions Are there geographic, sector, use-of-funds or project-cost limits?

What current access-to-finance evidence does—and does not—show

On 17 September 2026, the FCA said that 95.5% of all UK SMEs are microbusinesses and that microbusinesses are less likely to use external finance. It also highlighted limited awareness of options, complex applications, duplicated checks and difficulties for firms with limited collateral or largely intangible assets. The FCA review focused on business lending of £25,000 or less to sole traders and small partnerships; it should not be treated as evidence about every SME loan, grant or funding product. Read the FCA announcement on access to finance for small businesses.

Business.gov.uk advises applicants to get details right and check potential funding partners thoroughly. If you need help reviewing forecasts or preparing an application, consider speaking with an accountant or financial adviser; professional advice cannot guarantee a funding decision.
