Start with the device you play on: Xbox console and Windows PC use different controls for installs, updates, and storage. On console, check the system’s Updates & downloads area and your home Xbox setting if you expect games to install automatically. On PC, choose an install location in the Xbox app and keep enough space free on that drive. If installing is impractical, supported Xbox Cloud Gaming can let you stream some games instead.
Which settings apply to your device?
Game Pass does not have one universal downloads-and-storage switch. Console settings govern console game updates and storage; the Xbox app and Windows manage PC installs and app updates. Cloud gaming is a separate option that avoids installing a streamed game locally, where supported.

How do I manage downloads and updates on an Xbox console?
Find the update controls
Open the console’s Updates & downloads area to review game and app update controls. Microsoft Support search results identify this area, but the detailed support content is not available here; menu wording and placement may vary with console software. Check the labels on your console rather than relying on an assumed button-by-button path.

Microsoft’s support result associates automatic game installation with using the home Xbox. If you expect a game or update to install automatically, check that the console you use is configured as your home Xbox and review the available update controls. Do not assume that setting means every download will begin immediately: availability and the console’s current settings still matter.

How do I choose where Xbox app games install?
The Xbox app for Windows has offered a way to select a game install location and manage installed games, including moving or repairing them. Xbox Wire described those features in a November 18, 2021 announcement for Insiders, so the exact wording and options may differ in today’s app. Open the current Xbox app’s install or game-management settings and confirm the target drive before starting a large download.
Check capacity before installing
Make sure the selected drive has enough free space for the game before beginning. The source guidance does not establish a universal Game Pass storage requirement or a current per-title size; use the space shown for the particular game in the app rather than applying a general estimate.

Use an external drive with a compatibility caveat
An external drive can provide additional PC install capacity, but Xbox Wire warned that users might encounter problems launching games installed on one. Treat an external drive as a possible storage target, not a guarantee that every game will install or run from it. Confirm the current Xbox app and Windows support the drive for the intended use before moving a large library.

How do I keep games and apps up to date?
Distinguish game updates from Store app updates
Microsoft Store’s automatic app-update setting applies to Store apps. It should not be treated as a universal switch for updating every installed Game Pass game. Manage game updates through the relevant Xbox console or Xbox app controls, and use Store settings for Store app updates.

Choose automatic or manual oversight
Automatic updates reduce the need to check each title, while reviewing updates yourself gives you more control over when downloads use bandwidth and storage. The available controls and behavior depend on platform and current software; inspect the options exposed on your device rather than assuming the PC and console settings are interchangeable.
Can I avoid installing a game to save storage?
Microsoft presents downloading and installing games as one way to play and Xbox Cloud Gaming as another. Streaming can help when local storage is limited, but it is available only where supported: not every Game Pass title, device, region, or plan necessarily supports cloud play. Check the game’s listing and Microsoft’s current availability details before relying on streaming as a substitute for an install.

What should I verify before expanding storage?
Storage rules differ between Windows PCs and Xbox consoles, and console compatibility can depend on the generation and game. The available official guidance here does not establish current model-by-model console expansion compatibility or which games can be played from each storage type. Check current Xbox guidance for your exact console and game before buying or moving to a specific device; do not assume a drive that works for PC installs will work the same way on a console.
