If it contacted anything other than fresh water, Samsung says to gently rinse it with still fresh water immediately, then dry it thoroughly. If it behaves abnormally or you suspect liquid entered the sealed body, arrange a service inspection; the IP68 rating does not rule out water damage.
What to do right away
- Take off the watch. Remove it from the liquid as soon as you can.
- If it was fresh water, dry the exterior. Use a clean, soft cloth and dry the watch thoroughly. Samsung’s Gear S3 water-resistance guidance gives this instruction for fresh-water exposure. A soft microfiber cloth is suitable, but drying the outside cannot repair internal damage.
- If it was another liquid, rinse and dry. Samsung says to gently rinse the watch immediately with still fresh water, then dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. This applies to liquids other than fresh water, such as salt water or soapy water.
- Watch for abnormal behavior. If the watch malfunctions, or you suspect liquid has entered its sealed body, contact Samsung or a qualified service provider for inspection rather than opening the watch yourself.
What the Gear S3’s IP68 rating does—and does not—mean
Samsung identifies the Gear S3 as IP68 and gives an immersion limit of up to 1.5 metres for no more than 30 minutes on its Gear S3 support page, last updated October 8, 2020. That stated limit is not a promise that every exposure is safe. Samsung warns that water or dust can still damage the watch if it gets inside; the user manual says the device is not impervious to water damage in every situation.

IP68 does not establish protection at greater depths, for longer periods, against every liquid or water pressure, or under every condition. Samsung also cautions that forceful or prolonged exposure can exceed the intended protection, and that a drop or impact may reduce water resistance. Do not assume the watch remains protected after a hard impact or if its condition is uncertain. See Samsung’s explanation of water resistance for Galaxy and Gear devices.
When to seek a service inspection
Arrange professional inspection if the Gear S3 continues to malfunction or you believe water reached its internal components. Samsung’s broader water-exposure guidance recommends a service-center inspection after exposure, even if a device appears to work normally. That is general Galaxy guidance, not a Gear S3-specific promise about warranty coverage or the outcome of a repair.

Do not rely on exterior drying alone as proof the watch is repaired. Samsung’s Gear S3 manual for R765A/R775A variants states: “If any liquid is found to have entered your device components or an internally sealed system, this condition will void your device warranty.” The manual’s wording is not a complete statement of warranty law or consumer rights in every market; check the terms for your region and exact model. The manual also cautions: “Despite this classification, your device is not impervious to water damage in any situation.” Read the Gear S3 classic/frontier user manual.

What not to do
- Do not use a hair dryer or another heat source to dry the watch.
- Do not apply chemical cleaners or abrasives, or use compressed air.
- Do not treat those cautions as a repair method for internal water ingress; seek a service inspection if you suspect internal damage.
- Do not open the sealed watch unless you are qualified to repair it.
