Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want a local LLM server to release model memory when idle and reload it when a request arrives, llama-server has the clearest documented sleep-and-wake behavior among the options compared here. Its server documentation describes automatic sleep after a configurable idle period, unloading the model and KV cache, then reloading for new work. Ollama is a strong alternative when you want a straightforward keep-alive policy, including a per-request option to unload immediately after a response.
What reliable idle handling means
Idle handling is a lifecycle policy, not a promise of instant responses. Keeping a model loaded can avoid loading work on a later request, but retains memory. Unloading frees model memory; a subsequent request must trigger loading before inference can resume. The documentation establishes that behavior, but does not publish comparative wake-up times.

For this decision, distinguish three things: whether the server has a configurable idle policy, what it unloads, and how it handles the next request. A health check or available API endpoint does not by itself show that the model remains resident—or that it will unload automatically.
How the main alternatives handle idle models
| Server | What the reviewed documentation establishes | Idle and memory behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama | Local model server with per-request and server-wide retention controls. | Five-minute default; keep_alive accepts a duration or seconds, a negative value to keep the model loaded, or 0 to unload after the response. OLLAMA_KEEP_ALIVE sets the server default. |
Simple per-request or global keep-warm and unload controls. |
| LM Studio | Local model management and OpenAI-like local and network API serving; supports llama.cpp runtimes on Mac, Windows, and Linux, MLX on Apple Silicon, and headless llmster. |
Automatic model idle-unload behavior was not established in the reviewed documentation. | Desktop model-management workflows or a headless setup where its API and runtime options fit. |
| LocalAI | One client-facing API with selectable backends, including llama.cpp, vLLM, SGLang, and MLX, according to its product documentation. | Automatic model idle-unload behavior was not established in the reviewed source. | Backend flexibility behind a common API. |
| vLLM | HTTP serving with OpenAI-compatible endpoints and other API families. | General whole-model idle unloading was not established. Documented LoRA adapter load/unload routes are marked for local development and do not establish that the base model unloads on idle. | When its serving APIs and deployment requirements suit the workload; assess idle lifecycle separately. |
For the specific combination of automatic sleep, documented model-memory release, and reload on new work, llama.cpp server remains the clearest documented match. Its router mode addresses a different need: selecting and loading model instances on demand rather than serving one fixed model.

Ollama: set a keep-alive period or unload immediately
The Ollama FAQ says models are kept in memory for five minutes by default before being unloaded. It documents the literal question, “How do I keep a model loaded in memory or make it unload immediately?” and provides controls at both the server and request level.
Set a server-wide default
Use OLLAMA_KEEP_ALIVE to set the default retention policy for the Ollama server. The FAQ documents duration values and a negative value for keeping a model loaded indefinitely. Treat this as a default: a request’s keep_alive value can override it.

Set retention for an API request
The /api/generate and /api/chat endpoints accept keep_alive. Use a duration string or a number of seconds for a specific retention period, a negative value to keep the model loaded, or 0 to unload it after generating a response. For example, a JSON request can include "keep_alive": 0 when the desired behavior is to release the model after that response.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Unload a model now
The FAQ also documents ollama stop <model> as an immediate-unload route. This is useful when a model is already resident and you want to release it without waiting for its retention period to expire.

When llama.cpp router mode is a better fit
A sleep timeout is suited to a server that usually serves one model and should release it after a quiet period. If the endpoint serves a catalog, llama.cpp router mode can load and unload selected model instances as requests arrive and forward requests to them. That is on-demand model selection, not simply a longer or shorter idle timer.
Choose between these patterns based on the endpoint’s job: retain one frequently used model for a chosen period, sleep a single model after inactivity, or route requests among models that are loaded on demand. Router behavior and sleep behavior should be checked against the exact llama.cpp version you deploy; the README is rolling documentation on the project’s master branch.

How to choose for your workload
- Choose Ollama if a five-minute default, a simple server-wide retention setting, or per-request keep-alive and immediate-unload controls match your workflow.
- Choose llama.cpp server if an explicit idle-sleep timeout that unloads model and KV-cache memory, then reloads for new work, is the central requirement.
- Consider router mode if requests need to select among model instances rather than target one permanently configured model.
- Consider LM Studio or LocalAI for their documented model-management, API, runtime, or backend options, but verify the current release’s exact idle-unload settings before relying on them.
- Consider vLLM when its documented serving interface fits; do not treat adapter lifecycle documentation as proof of whole-model idle unloading.
Also check client API compatibility, operating-system and runtime needs, expected concurrency, operational complexity, and the available memory budget. The Ollama FAQ notes that concurrent loading and processing depend on available system memory or VRAM: requests may queue when memory is insufficient, and idle models may be unloaded to make room. Parallel requests also increase memory needs with context length. Actual behavior therefore depends on the model, context, hardware, concurrency, and retention settings—not only on the server name.
llama.cpp sleep details that affect monitoring
In the llama.cpp server README, --sleep-idle-seconds SECONDS sets the inactivity threshold, and -1 disables sleeping by default. The documentation says sleep unloads the model and associated memory, including the KV cache, and that a new task automatically triggers a reload.

To inspect sleep status, query GET /props. The README says requests to /health, /props, /models, and /metrics neither count as incoming work nor reset the idle timer or trigger model reload. This lets monitoring check server state without keeping the model awake. It also means monitoring activity should not be mistaken for inference traffic when diagnosing why a model stayed asleep.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The official documentation reviewed here describes controls and lifecycle behavior, not a head-to-head test. It does not establish a winner for latency, throughput, memory use, wake-up time, or long-running reliability. Treat “reliable” as a lifecycle that is documented, configurable, and observable—not as a guarantee that unloading removes the wait before the next inference.
Documentation is version-sensitive. Pin the llama.cpp version when reproducing a deployment based on its master-branch README, and check the current documentation for the specific release and configuration you plan to use in LM Studio, LocalAI, Ollama, or vLLM. Test the chosen policy under your own model, context, request pattern, and memory constraints before depending on its behavior.
