If a Pokémon Trading Card Game deck is rejected, do not argue the ruling or try to conceal the problem. First identify the event format and date, then verify every card against the current official legality and errata information. Next inspect each card and its sleeve for marks, damage, alterations, reflectivity, and mismatches; replace anything questionable; remove unofficial proxies; confirm language eligibility for the event’s rating zone; and submit a corrected deck list. For an individual borderline card, the organizer or head judge is the final practical authority, so ask for an inspection before the first round whenever possible.
Start with the event format, date, and tier
“Tournament legal” is not a permanent property of a Pokémon card. Legality depends on the format being played, the event date, the event tier, and sometimes the rating zone where the tournament is held. A card can be legal in one setting and illegal in another, even on the same weekend.

Confirm the format and date
Read the event listing, registration page, or organizer announcement for the exact format. Do not rely on a memory of the last rotation or on a legality result from an older event. Standard legality changes over time, and the current answer must be checked against the date on which you will play.

Play! Pokémon explains that Standard legality is identified by “a letter found on the bottom-left corner of all cards starting in 2020.” Look at the printed card itself, not just a deck-building app’s color or symbol. The mark is evidence to check, not a substitute for checking the current official legality information.

An older or unmarked printing can still be legal when the same card has been reprinted with a currently legal regulation mark. This is why replacing every old-looking card is unnecessary. Compare the card’s name and game identity with the current legal reprint, then use the current wording and any published errata when you play it.
Account for event tier and rating zone
Language rules are stricter at Premier Events and are tied to the event’s rating zone. A card printed in Japanese, Korean, or another language is therefore not automatically legal merely because the card is otherwise current. At other tournaments and at League sessions, the organizer or League staff may decide which languages are acceptable. Check before traveling, especially when the event listing does not state a language policy.

| Which cards are legal? | Format, event date, regulation mark, current legality list, and errata | Organizer or head judge |
| Is an older printing usable? | Whether the same card has a current-mark reprint | Organizer or head judge |
| Is a foreign-language card allowed? | Premier Event rating-zone rules or the local organizer’s policy | Organizer, League staff, or head judge |
| Is a damaged card usable? | Whether its condition or sleeve makes it identifiable from the back | Head judge |
Check every card against current legality and errata
Make a card-by-card inventory
Spread out the complete deck and check each physical card rather than checking one copy and assuming the rest match. Record the card name, set or printing if relevant, regulation mark, language, and condition. Compare that information with the current official Play! Pokémon legality and errata resources for the event’s format.

Understand what a reprint does—and does not do
A current reprint can make an older copy of the same card usable, but it does not make every card with a similar name legal. Confirm that the reprint is the same game card, not a different card with a related title, different effects, or a different card number. When in doubt, show both the card and the official legality entry to the organizer before registration.
Correct the deck list before deck check
Your submitted list must describe the deck you are actually presenting. If you remove an illegal card, replace it with a legal one, or change a printing after discovering an issue, update the list and submit the corrected version through the method required by that event. Keep the corrected list available so a judge can compare it with the physical deck without guessing which version is current.
Inspect cards for marks, damage, and alterations
Legality is not only about the printed text. The Tournament Rules Handbook states: “A card is considered marked if some aspect of the card makes it possible to identify it without seeing its face, including scratches, tears, discoloration, bends, etc.” A card that is technically legal by regulation mark can still be rejected if its back, edge, thickness, or surface makes it distinguishable during a shuffle.
Physical problems that can fail a check
- Bends, creases, dents, or warping that can be felt or seen through a sleeve
- Scratches, tears, peeling, or a damaged corner
- Discoloration, stains, fading, or a different surface gloss
- Any feature that lets you identify the card from the back or while handling the deck
Inspect cards under the same lighting you expect at the venue. Feel the edges, look across the sleeved deck for height or thickness differences, and fan the deck to spot a card that catches light differently. A problem that seems minor at home can become obvious when every other card has a uniform back.

Post-production alterations are a separate risk
The handbook gives autographs, artwork, and other amendments to a card’s surface as examples of alterations. Official stamps applied by The Pokémon Company International are not included in that example, but a player-added signature, drawing, foil change, or painted border can still create a problem. Do not assume that an attractive customization is acceptable because it does not change the card’s effect; ask the head judge before using it.
Make the sleeves uniform, opaque, and shuffleable
Sleeves are part of a deck check. The handbook requires sleeves to match in color or design, condition, size, and texture. Edges should be solid in color, and sleeves should not be excessively reflective. Pokémon Organized Play strongly recommends sleeves with an opaque back so the card face or back cannot be identified through the sleeve.
Replace sleeves as a complete set
If one sleeve is split, glossy, bent, dirty, or a different shade, replacing only that sleeve may leave the deck with a detectable pattern. The safest pre-event fix is to use one matching sleeve type for the entire deck, including any required extra cards that will be used during the event. Check replacement sleeves for manufacturing differences before you sleeve the deck.

Use inner sleeves and oversleeves carefully
Inner sleeves and oversleeves are allowed only when the resulting deck still meets the rules and can be shuffled normally. They must not create uneven thickness, exposed edges, reflections, or a recognizable subset of cards. If the double-sleeved deck is difficult to shuffle or visibly warped, remove the extra layer or change the sleeve combination before presenting it for inspection.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Quick sleeve test
- Place the fully sleeved deck face down and compare the backs under bright light.
- Run a finger along the sides and corners to find height, texture, or thickness differences.
- Shuffle using the method you will use at the event; sleeves that catch, split, or reveal cards need replacement.
- Remove any sleeve with a different back, reflective patch, marked edge, or visible defect.
Practical supply checklist: Carry a complete spare set of opaque, non-reflective sleeves in the same design, plus enough matching sleeves for cards that may need replacement after handling. This is a preparation measure, not a way to make a damaged card itself legal; the card and its sleeve must both pass inspection.
Do not use photocopies or handmade proxies
Photocopies, printouts, handwritten substitutes, and handmade cards are not a workaround for a missing, expensive, or damaged card at an official tournament. The Asia-region official floor rules state: “Fake or proxy cards (photocopies, printouts or handmade cards used in place of an actualcard) are not allowed in any tournament.” The published wording includes “actualcard” as one word.
If a card is damaged before the event, obtain a genuine replacement or ask the organizer what options exist before registering. Do not bring a proxy expecting the judge to approve it at deck check. A judge’s permission to use a replacement after an in-event accident is a different procedure from bringing an unofficial substitute to the venue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to do when damage happens during the event
- Stop and call a judge as soon as you notice the damage; do not continue playing with a card that has become identifiable.
- Show the damaged card, its sleeve, and the rest of the deck so the judge can assess whether the card is marked.
- Follow the judge’s replacement procedure exactly. The judge may direct you to replace the card or sleeve, document the change, or take another remedy under the event rules.
- Do not alter the card, switch in a proxy, or rewrite the deck list without the judge’s instruction.
Handle foreign-language cards before you travel
Japanese cards are not automatically illegal, and they are not automatically legal. At Premier Events, the permitted languages are limited by the rating zone. At other tournaments and League sessions, the organizer or League staff decide. The same Japanese card can therefore receive different answers at different event tiers or in different regions.

Ask the event organizer a precise question that includes the event name, date, format, card language, and rating zone. Save the response and bring it with your deck materials, but understand that the head judge’s ruling at the venue controls the event. If the answer is uncertain, use cards in a language clearly accepted by that event rather than risking a deck check failure.
Troubleshoot a failed deck check
When a judge identifies a problem, ask which category caused the failure. Fixing the wrong category can leave the original issue unresolved.
| Symptom | Likely issue | Corrective action | Final authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card has no current mark in Standard | Older or unmarked printing | Verify a current-mark reprint and apply the current errata; replace it if no legal reprint exists | Head judge or organizer |
| One card is easy to find in a face-down deck | Bend, scratch, tear, discoloration, or sleeve defect | Replace the card if possible and resleeve the deck uniformly | Head judge |
| Card has a signature or added artwork | Post-production alteration | Use an unaltered copy or obtain approval before the event | Head judge |
| Sleeves have different backs or reflectivity | Nonmatching, transparent, worn, or glossy sleeves | Resleeve the entire deck with one opaque, non-reflective type | Head judge |
| Japanese or other foreign-language card is questioned | Rating-zone or event-tier language restriction | Confirm the policy with the organizer; replace the card if the language is not eligible | Organizer or head judge |
| Photocopy or handwritten substitute appears in the deck | Unofficial proxy | Remove it and use a genuine legal card; call a judge if damage occurred during play | Judge under the event’s floor rules |
| Deck list no longer matches the deck | Unrecorded replacement or correction | Submit a corrected list through the event’s process before the deadline or ask the judge what to do | Organizer or head judge |
A pre-event legality procedure that prevents most surprises
- Save the event details: record the format, date, event tier, venue, rating zone, and any stated language policy.
- Check regulation marks: inspect the bottom-left mark on every Standard card and identify older or unmarked copies.
- Verify reprints and errata: use the current official Play! Pokémon legality and errata resources, not an old deck list or an outdated app result.
- Inspect card surfaces: remove cards with bends, scratches, tears, discoloration, altered artwork, signatures, or other identifying features.
- Sleeve consistently: use matching, opaque, non-reflective sleeves with the same condition, size, texture, and solid-color edges.
- Test the assembled deck: shuffle it normally and look for cards that catch, reflect, feel different, or reveal their position.
- Confirm language: obtain an event-specific answer for any card outside the languages permitted in the relevant rating zone.
- Compare with the deck list: make the written list match the exact cards and quantities you will present.
- Ask early: show a questionable card or completed deck to the organizer or head judge before round one, when possible.
- Carry spares: bring matching sleeves and genuine replacement cards, but never substitute a photocopy or handmade proxy.
Who makes the final call?
Official resources establish the general rules, but an individual card’s condition, sleeve combination, language, or alteration must be judged in the context of the actual event. The organizer can clarify local policy; the head judge can issue the ruling that applies to the tournament. If a judge says a card is marked or a sleeve is unacceptable, do not keep using it because another event allowed it. Correct the deck, update the list as directed, and ask for a recheck.
For routine preparation, the official Play! Pokémon resources page and your local League or tournament organizer are the best places to confirm the event’s format, current legality information, language policy, and deck-check expectations. Bring the question to them before registration rather than waiting until the first round.
