First, find out exactly what information was exposed, then act on that category: secure affected logins, contact your bank or card issuer about exposed payment details, and protect your credit if your Social Security number was involved. A breach notice does not mean identity theft has occurred; the IRS says, “Not all data breaches or computer hacks result in identity theft.”
Start by identifying what was exposed
Read the breach notice carefully. Note which information was involved, when the incident happened if that is stated, what the organization recommends, and whether it offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance. The right response depends on the type of data and whether you see signs of misuse.

If a password or account login was exposed
- Change the password on the affected service promptly. Change it anywhere else you reused it, especially on email, financial, shopping, or other accounts that store payment details.
- If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery process.
- Review the account’s recovery email address and phone number, recent activity, messages, and email-forwarding rules. Remove changes you did not make.
- Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where the service offers it.
If bank or payment information was exposed
- Contact the bank, card issuer, or payment provider through its official app, website, or phone number. Ask its fraud department whether to lock or replace the card or account and what activity to monitor.
- Review recent transactions and report anything you do not recognize.
If your Social Security number was exposed
- Check your credit reports for accounts or activity you do not recognize. IdentityTheft.gov says consumers can get free weekly credit report checks through its recovery guidance.
- Consider a free fraud alert or security freeze; the differences are explained below.
- If the organization responsible for the breach offers free monitoring, consider using it. It is not necessary to buy a paid service simply because your information was exposed.
- The IRS recommends filing taxes early to reduce the chance that someone else files first using your information. Follow the IRS’s identity-theft guidance if you receive a genuine notice about tax-related identity theft.
If an email or social account was exposed
In addition to changing the password, inspect recovery details, forwarding rules, sent messages, and account activity for changes you did not make. If you are locked out, use the provider’s recovery process rather than a link sent in an unsolicited message.

Choose a credit protection: fraud alert or freeze
Both options are free under the federal guidance cited by IdentityTheft.gov, but they work differently. A fraud alert asks businesses to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. A security freeze restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, making it less likely that an identity thief can open a new account in your name.
| Option | What it does | How to arrange it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. | IdentityTheft.gov says you can place a free one-year alert by contacting one credit bureau; that bureau notifies the other two. | It prompts extra identity checks when you seek credit. |
| Security freeze | Restricts access to your credit file for prospective creditors. | It is free. Contact the credit bureaus to manage a freeze. | You may need to lift or manage it when applying for a credit card, cell phone, or another service that checks credit. |
A freeze is not mandatory for everyone. Choose based on how much protection you want and whether you are likely to apply for credit or another service that checks your file. IdentityTheft.gov also describes a seven-year extended fraud alert for identity-theft victims.

Watch for scams that exploit the exposure
Scammers may use real details about you to make a message or call sound legitimate. Don’t trust a caller solely because they know information that was exposed. Verify requests by navigating to the official government or financial-institution website yourself and contacting the organization through its published number.
