If your new 5G phone is losing charge quickly, first allow setup and updates to finish, then check battery usage for an app or weak-signal activity. 1. Give setup and updates time to settle
A new phone may use more power than usual while it installs apps, syncs data, and optimizes software. The timeframe depends on the platform: Samsung says Galaxy apps and services optimize during the first few days, while Google says Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset can take up to a few weeks. Apple notes that ongoing setup and a recent iOS update can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. After setup or an update, give downloads and background activity time to finish before judging everyday battery life. If the phone continues to drain quickly, inspect its battery-use screen rather than assuming setup is the cause.

2. Find what is using the battery
Open the battery settings and check which apps or system activities account for the most use. Menu names differ by model and software version.

- iPhone: In Settings, open Battery. Apple’s screen can show app and system activity, including Background Activity or No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal.
- Pixel: Open Settings, then Battery and Battery usage. Google provides app and system views.
- Samsung Galaxy: Open the battery settings and review detailed app battery usage; the exact path can vary.
Look for an app with unusually high use, especially in the background, or activity associated with mobile-network use. If one app stands out, review its background behavior before restricting it. 3. Check signal and 5G behavior
Weak or unstable mobile coverage can increase battery use as the phone works to maintain a connection. Apple identifies low signal and no coverage as battery-use factors, and recommends using Wi-Fi when practical. Network behavior also depends on the carrier and location.

Samsung’s US guidance describes a particular configuration in which the phone maintains LTE or 3G alongside 5G for calls and messages. Samsung says that setup can increase battery drain and warmth. This is not a universal description of every carrier’s 5G network. Samsung US, Apple Support.

Apple’s 5G Auto option can switch a supported iPhone to LTE when 5G speeds do not noticeably improve the experience. That may reduce battery use without requiring 5G to be disabled all the time. 4. Make targeted settings changes
Choose a change based on what the battery screen shows and how you use the phone.
- If an app is using power in the background: Review its background permissions or battery use. Google recommends keeping app battery optimization on. Samsung offers sleeping or deep-sleeping options for infrequently used apps; those restrictions may affect background activity or notifications. Google Pixel Help, Samsung.
- If coverage is weak: Use Wi-Fi where practical, or try a supported network-mode option that better fits your coverage and need for 5G. Network settings and their effects vary, so follow instructions for your exact phone and carrier.
- If you need extra runtime for now: Apple lists Low Power Mode as an option on iPhone. It can reduce background activity and some features, so use it when the added runtime matters more than those activities. Apple Support.
5. Update and restart, then check usage again
Check for available Android or app updates as part of troubleshooting, and restart the phone if appropriate. Google notes that battery use can temporarily rise after a software update while the device downloads and optimizes software. Once updates and background activity are complete, revisit the battery-use screen to see whether the same app or system activity is still responsible. Google Pixel Help, Google Pixel Help.

6. Run diagnostics or contact the manufacturer
Pixel: use the built-in diagnostic guidance
Google says Battery Diagnostics is available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Its overnight procedure is to charge the phone to 100%, close open apps, unplug it, and leave it idle overnight. If the charge loss is more than 10%, Google directs users to review Battery usage. This threshold belongs to Google’s Pixel procedure; it is not a general pass/fail standard for other phones. Google Pixel Help.
iPhone: check Battery Health
On supported iPhones, check Battery Health. If the status displays Service, follow the onscreen guidance from Apple. Apple Support.

Other persistent problems
If repeated troubleshooting does not resolve persistent Pixel drain, Google advises contacting support. For Samsung and other brands, follow the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and region. A new phone that remains abnormally warm or loses charge rapidly despite completed setup and reasonable signal conditions is a reason to seek model-specific guidance rather than assume every 5G phone behaves the same way.
