For navigation drain, reduce the screen’s power demand and keep the phone cool; for idle drain, review Maps’ location access and background-dependent features. Do not switch off location during a trip: Maps needs it to provide turn-by-turn directions.
Find out when Maps is using battery
Open your phone’s battery-use screen and check Google Maps’ activity. Look for active use during a trip and background use when you were not navigating, if your phone shows those details. Battery menus and labels vary by phone maker and operating-system version, so there is no single path that applies to every device.

If use lines up with a long drive, the screen and location updates are likely relevant. Google says, “During navigation, Google Maps tracks your location to give turn-by-turn directions.” If Maps shows background activity while idle, review its permissions and features as described below. This check helps identify when to focus your troubleshooting; it does not by itself establish a specific cause.
If Maps drains battery during navigation
Reduce screen power use
- Lower the screen brightness or use adaptive brightness. Google’s Navigation SDK power guidance recommends reducing brightness, but it does not quantify savings for the consumer Maps app.
- Try dark theme if your phone has an OLED or AMOLED display. The benefit varies with the display and brightness setting, so it is not a guaranteed fix.
Keep the phone cool
Avoid trapping heat around the phone while it is navigating. Google’s developer guidance recommends keeping the device cool, but it does not provide a consumer-app battery-saving figure.

Keep location enabled; supply power on long trips
Do not disable GPS or system location as a general battery fix while navigating: Maps needs location for turn-by-turn directions. Google notes that low battery and some battery-saver behaviors can coincide with GPS-signal loss; some devices may disable GPS when the battery is low, the screen is off, or Maps is in the background. If the phone runs low on a long drive, a compatible car charger can keep it powered. That supplies power rather than reducing Maps’ energy use.
If Maps uses battery while idle
Review Maps’ location permission
Set the app’s location access to the narrowest option that still supports the features you use. Restricting background access may affect features that depend on it, including some Google Maps features, so consider your usage before changing the setting.

- iPhone: Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then choose Google Maps to manage its access. Apple says background location access can generate reminders, and turning off Location Services limits location features in the foreground and background. Available permission choices can vary by iOS version.
- Android: Open your phone’s system settings and review Google Maps’ app-specific location permission. The exact path and available choices vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Distinguish app permission from Android Location Accuracy
Android’s Location Accuracy is a system-wide setting, not the same as Google Maps’ app permission. It combines available GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular, and sensor inputs to improve location estimates. Google documents these paths:

- Android 12 and later: Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy.
- Android 11 and earlier: Settings > Location > Advanced > Location Accuracy.
Changing Location Accuracy is not a substitute for reviewing Maps’ app permission, and turning location off can impair navigation.

Check which background features you rely on
Before limiting background access, consider whether you use Google Maps Location Sharing or another feature that needs it. Do not assume Timeline is the cause of idle drain: Google says Timeline is off by default and has its own settings, with collection frequency varying by activity.
Do offline maps save battery?
Google’s offline-map instructions support downloading an area on Android and iOS. Offline maps are useful where connectivity is poor or unavailable, but Google does not describe them as a battery-saving measure. Offline directions do not include live traffic; travel-time estimates assume no traffic congestion.

- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Offline Maps, then tap Select Your Own Map.
- Position the rectangle over the area you need and tap Download.
You can also download a map from a searched destination. When enabled, offline maps may auto-update about once every two weeks; that is a map-maintenance cadence, not a battery statistic.

What battery figures are known?
There is no reliable figure in the cited sources for how much battery Google Maps uses or how much any of these adjustments saves. Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later may deliver background location updates only a few times each hour, according to Android Developers’ guidance last updated 2026-02-26. That is a platform limit described for app developers, not a measurement of Google Maps’ battery use.
