Does 5G Use More Data Than 4G? What Affects Your Usage

The same file or stream at the same quality uses the same data on 5G and 4G. Usage can rise when faster service changes what you stream, download, or do online.

No—not for the same content delivered at the same quality and settings. A fixed download or identical stream does not inherently consume more data just because it travels over 5G instead of 4G. Your usage can rise if 5G makes you more likely to stream at higher quality, download larger files, or spend longer using data-heavy services. Your carrier plan—not a universal 5G rule—sets your allowance and what happens when you use it up.

Does the same activity use the same amount of data on 5G and 4G?

Generally, yes, if the content and settings are identical. Downloading the same file transfers the same file; loading the same page or playing the same video at the same quality does not inherently require extra data on 5G. Network generation affects how quickly data can be transferred, not the size of the content itself.

This distinction is also reflected in Virgin Plus’s support FAQ: its comparison describes higher potential download speeds for 5G than for 4G LTE, not a larger data charge for identical content. Speed and data volume are related only when what you do or receive changes.

Why might your usage increase after switching to 5G?

A faster connection can make data-heavy activities feel more convenient. If that changes your choices, the amount transferred can increase even though 5G did not add data to the same content.

  • Two Data Packs Included: Each SIMO device comes bundled with 1GB of Free Data every month, forever (12GB Yearly) along with a one-time 30GB pack of Global Data
  • Higher-quality streaming: Playing video at a higher resolution or bitrate typically means more data than playing the same program at a lower quality.
  • Larger or more frequent downloads: Faster downloads can make large files, app updates, or offline media easier to fetch over cellular data.
  • Longer or more frequent sessions: If quicker loading encourages more browsing, streaming, or other online activity, total usage can go up because you used more content or spent more time consuming it.

There is no universal rule that every app automatically raises its quality on 5G. Behavior depends on the service, device, app settings, and market; a faster connection alone does not establish that an app changed its defaults.

What 5G speed figures do—and do not—tell you

5G is designed to support higher speeds and capacity than 4G, but advertised or measured speed figures are not data-usage figures. Qualcomm describes 5G as capable of peak rates up to 20 Gbit/s and average rates above 100 Mbit/s; those are capability figures, not a promise about an individual connection. Qualcomm’s 5G FAQ also notes that 5G is significantly faster than 4G.

Real-world performance varies with location and network conditions. Safaricom’s FAQ gives carrier-stated average speeds of 150–200 Mbps for 5G and 23–35 Mbps for 4G, figures specific to that provider’s context rather than a universal comparison. Distance from a cell site, spectrum, and local network use can affect the speed you experience.

Ofcom’s 2024 Mobile Matters report found that 29% of measured 5G uploads averaged at least 20 Mbit/s, compared with 15% for 4G and 3% for 3G. These are upload-performance measurements, not amounts of data consumed. Neither speed capability nor a faster upload rate establishes a general percentage by which 5G increases a person’s data use.

Does 5G change your monthly allowance or charges?

That depends on your carrier and plan. Online activities count toward a plan’s data allowance according to its terms, and some plans reduce speeds after a high-speed allotment is exhausted. The threshold, any reduced-speed service, prioritization, and other post-allotment treatment are plan-specific—not consequences that apply identically to all 5G users. Check your provider’s current terms for your country and plan. Verizon’s data-usage guidance explains that activities use plan data and that post-allotment treatment depends on the plan.

How to check what is using your data

  1. Check cellular usage by app on your phone. Find the cellular or mobile-data usage view in your device’s settings; the exact menu name and reporting period vary by operating system and model.
  2. Review quality and download settings. Check video and music apps for cellular playback quality, automatic downloads, and offline-media settings. Available controls differ by service.
  3. Compare your phone’s totals with your carrier account. Your carrier’s app or website shows the allowance and the plan’s rules after any threshold. Billing periods and device counters may not line up exactly, so use the provider’s account as the reference for plan usage.
  4. Change the setting or habit responsible. Lowering streaming quality, limiting cellular downloads, or using Wi-Fi for large transfers can reduce the amount you choose to consume.

Is there a typical amount of extra data caused by 5G?

No reliable universal figure establishes how much extra data a typical person uses solely because of 5G. Reported differences in usage can reflect what people do with the connection, not a built-in data multiplier. An Opensignal report from 2021 discusses behavioral reasons 5G users may consume more data, but it should not be treated as a current, universal estimate for every user or plan. The practical comparison is your own app usage and settings, alongside your carrier’s allowance.
