If your internet is slow or keeps dropping, first find out whether the problem affects one device, Wi-Fi only, or every device—including those connected by Ethernet. That comparison helps separate a device or wireless issue from a problem with your router, modem, or internet provider. Test before buying new equipment or changing plans.
Start by narrowing down what is affected
When the problem happens, check another phone, computer, or tablet on the same network. Note whether it is slow browsing, buffering, or a complete disconnection; those symptoms can have different causes.

- One device is affected: The issue may be that device’s Wi-Fi connection, network adapter, settings, or software. Restart it and run its operating-system network troubleshooter. On Windows, Microsoft directs users to Get Help and Windows network troubleshooting tools. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.
- Several devices are affected: Look at shared equipment, Wi-Fi conditions, and the provider connection. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if you can.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the activity or speed test that was failing over Wi-Fi. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless signal, interference, router settings, or the affected device’s Wi-Fi adapter. If several devices also struggle over Ethernet, check the modem, router, cables, and provider service.
On Windows, Microsoft describes checking the default gateway and pinging the router as ways to investigate local connectivity. These steps can help distinguish a problem reaching the router from a problem farther along the connection. Instructions are in Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide.

If the problem is limited to Wi-Fi
Test near the router
Try the same device in the room with the router, then in the usual problem area. If performance improves nearby, distance or obstacles such as walls may be weakening the signal. The device’s Wi-Fi capability and the wireless frequency it connects to can also affect results.
Look for interference and busy periods
Nearby routers and other devices using similar wireless frequencies can interfere. Several simultaneous high-bandwidth activities—such as streaming or large downloads—can also compete for capacity. Note whether drops occur in one room, at certain times, or when other people are using the connection heavily. Pause unnecessary large downloads or streams and retest. Google lists these as potential factors in its Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi slow-internet troubleshooting guide.

Changing a Wi-Fi band or moving a router may help with a local wireless problem, but it will not resolve an outage or slow service from the provider. Use the Ethernet comparison to avoid treating every slowdown as a Wi-Fi issue.

For an Ethernet connection, check that both ends of the cable are firmly seated in the intended ports on the router and computer. If you have another cable, use it for a comparison. Also consider any switch, modem, splitter, or other device between the computer and router: the slowest link in that path can limit performance.

Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable for internet service above 100 Mbps; a cable or other component with a lower capability can bottleneck the connection. Replacing a cable is worth considering when its condition or rating is a plausible cause—not as a remedy for weak Wi-Fi or a provider outage. See Google’s cabling and slow-internet guidance and Microsoft’s Ethernet checks.
Use speed tests as comparisons, not verdicts
A speed test is a snapshot, not proof by itself that the provider is at fault. Results can change with time of day, network congestion, the device, and the test server or its location. Repeat tests under similar conditions and compare results with your plan, rather than relying on a single low reading.

Record whether each result came from Wi-Fi or Ethernet, where you tested, when you tested, and which device you used. Google says its Home app measures the connection from the router or primary Wi-Fi point to Google servers; other tests may measure from a device to a server, so their results can differ. Google defines download speed as the rate at which a network receives data, measured in Mbps. Its speed-test and connection guidance explains what its test measures.
Restart the modem and router carefully
Restarting can re-establish a connection, but it temporarily disconnects everyone using the network. Follow the instructions for your specific equipment, especially if the modem and router are a single unit. Microsoft’s general sequence is to unplug the router and modem, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem and allow its lights to settle, then reconnect the router and wait for startup. Google’s modem-specific instructions instead say to unplug the modem, wait two minutes, reconnect it, and wait for the internet light. These are source-specific procedures, not interchangeable timing rules.

After the equipment is back online, repeat the same wired or Wi-Fi comparison that showed the problem. For device-specific instructions, use the maker’s documentation. Google’s troubleshooting guide and modem restart instructions provide steps for its equipment.
When to contact your internet provider
Check the provider’s outage information and contact support if multiple devices remain slow or disconnected—particularly if Ethernet is also poor after you have checked the cable and restarted the equipment. Ask whether there is an outage, whether your service is provisioned as expected, and whether your wired results are consistent with your plan.
Give the provider the times of the problem, repeated test results, affected devices, and whether Ethernet performs differently from Wi-Fi. That evidence helps distinguish a recurring provider-side issue from a problem confined to one device or the local wireless network. Google also recommends checking for provider problems when results are unexpectedly low and contacting the provider about recurring trouble: see its speed-test guidance and slow-internet troubleshooting steps.
