Choose an all-in-one PC if you want the computer and display integrated into one device. Choose a mini PC with a separate monitor if you want to select the screen independently and are willing to check that the components work together. Neither setup is universally better: compare the exact screen, ports, included accessories, total cost, and service terms before buying.
What is the difference?
An all-in-one (AIO) combines the computer and display in a single unit. A mini PC is a compact computer that uses a separate display; that monitor is part of the complete setup, not an optional detail. The distinction is mainly about how the computer and screen are packaged. It does not, by itself, establish which setup is faster, cheaper, easier to repair, or longer-lasting.

Compare the setup that you will actually use
| What to compare | All-in-one PC | Mini PC plus monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Built in. Check the exact model’s screen size, resolution, brightness, and other features. | Selected separately. Check the monitor’s inputs against the PC’s supported outputs, resolution, and refresh rate. |
| Components and setup | Computer and screen are combined. Confirm which keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals are included. | PC and monitor are separate components or purchases. Include the display and any missing peripherals in the setup plan. |
| Connectivity | Ports depend on the specific model. | Display outputs and supported display configurations depend on the specific PC; the monitor must have compatible inputs. |
| Total cost | Not established as categorically lower or higher. Compare the current price of the exact model and its included accessories. | Not established as categorically lower or higher. Add the chosen monitor and any peripherals not included with the PC. |

What model specifications can tell you
Specifications illustrate why the product name alone is not enough to decide. They are examples for particular products, not promises about every all-in-one or mini PC.

Apple lists a 24-inch-class iMac with a 4.5K Retina display: its specifications give an actual diagonal of 23.5 inches, a resolution of 4480 by 2520, and brightness of 500 nits. Apple also lists a keyboard and mouse in the box; configuration details can vary. See Apple’s iMac technical specifications.

HP’s cited all-in-one series includes 23.8-inch and 27-inch models. Its specifications include FHD (1920 × 1080) examples, while available resolutions and ports vary by series and model. HP also documents configurations where a keyboard and mouse may need to be purchased separately, so check the exact product listing. See HP’s all-in-one desktop specifications.
Mini PC display support is model-specific
Lenovo lists an HDMI 2.1 output supporting up to 4K at 60 Hz on its IdeaCentre Mini Gen 10 (1L Intel). That is a specification for this product, not a category-wide capability. See Lenovo’s IdeaCentre Mini Gen 10 specifications.

Check the specifications for the chip and configuration you intend to buy rather than assuming all models in a family support the same number or type of displays. How to check a mini PC and monitor will work together
- Choose the display you need. Note its resolution, refresh rate, and the number of displays you plan to connect.
- Check the exact mini PC’s specifications. Confirm its supported display count, maximum resolution and refresh rate, and available video outputs. Do not infer support from the words “mini PC” or from a different configuration.
- Match the connections at both ends. Compare the PC’s outputs with the monitor’s inputs. Apple’s connection guidance recommends checking the model specifications and notes that an adapter may be needed when the cable does not match an available port. See Apple’s guidance on connecting a display to a Mac.
- Check the full setup before purchase. Confirm whether you need an adapter, cable, keyboard, or mouse, and include those items and the monitor in your total cost.
Which setup fits your priorities?
Choose an all-in-one if you want an integrated display
- You prefer a computer and screen packaged together rather than selecting a monitor separately.
- You have found an exact model whose screen size, resolution, ports, and built-in features meet your needs.
- You have verified what the listing includes, especially the keyboard and mouse.
Choose a mini PC and monitor if you want to select the screen separately
- You want to choose the monitor independently of the computer.
- You are comfortable verifying video outputs, monitor inputs, display count, resolution, refresh rate, and any adapter requirement for the exact components.
- You have included the monitor and any missing accessories when comparing the complete setup’s cost.
What to verify before deciding
- Screen: Compare the exact display’s size, resolution, and features with the work and viewing distance you have in mind.
- Ports and display support: Check the model-specific PC and monitor specifications; for a mini PC, confirm both ends of the display connection.
- Included peripherals: Read the exact listing rather than assuming a keyboard and mouse are in the box.
- Complete cost: Compare current prices for the full configurations, adding a monitor and missing peripherals where needed. The cited specifications do not establish a like-for-like price winner.
- Warranty and service: Consult the documentation for each exact model before drawing conclusions about repairability, upgrade options, or expected lifespan.
