First, work out whether the credential is lost or may have been seen by someone else. If it was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and, if assets remain, move them to a new wallet with fresh credentials as soon as you can do so safely. If it is lost, do not delete or reset a wallet you can still access until you have checked the provider’s official recovery instructions. A self-custody wallet cannot be reset by Ethereum support when its required recovery credentials and other valid recovery methods are gone.
Lost and exposed credentials need different responses
A seed phrase—also called a recovery phrase or Secret Recovery Phrase—is the master credential from which a wallet can derive accounts. Anyone with it may control the accounts and assets associated with it. An individual private key controls an individual account, so an exposed phrase can put more accounts at risk than an exposed key. See ethereum.org’s security guidance and MetaMask’s credential guidance.

| Situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lost, but the wallet still opens | You may still have a way to establish fresh credentials or move assets, depending on the wallet and account type. | Do not uninstall, reset, or delete the wallet before checking its official instructions and whether a legitimate backup remains. |
| Lost, and you have no wallet access or valid recovery method | A self-custody wallet cannot be reset without the required seed phrase or private key. | Check the wallet provider’s official recovery guidance. If this is an exchange-hosted account rather than a self-custody wallet, contact the exchange through its official support channel. |
| Possibly exposed | Someone else may be able to control the account or accounts tied to the credential. | Assume it is compromised. If assets remain, use a new wallet with fresh credentials and move them promptly, taking care to verify the destination and network. |
Ethereum.org explains that self-custody funds cannot be recovered without the seed phrase or private keys, and that neither ethereum.org nor MetaMask can reset a self-custody wallet. A compatible wallet may restore access if you still have its required recovery phrase; the steps depend on the wallet and account configuration. See the Ethereum FAQ and MetaMask instructions.

If your seed phrase or private key may be exposed
- Stop sharing it. Do not enter the phrase or key into a website, support chat, email, form, or unsolicited recovery service. Legitimate support does not need your wallet secret. Ethereum.org’s guidance is direct: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
- Create a replacement wallet through a clean, trusted path. Generate fresh credentials and do not reuse the exposed phrase or key. Keep the new backup private and offline. A hardware wallet can keep the new wallet’s private keys offline, but it does not repair an exposed credential. Ethereum.org discusses hardware wallets as an offline-storage option in its security guidance.
- Move assets that remain, if it is safe to do so. Follow the official instructions for your wallet. Carefully verify the destination address and network before confirming. Ethereum transactions that are confirmed are irreversible, and there is no guarantee that your transfer will complete before an attacker acts. See ethereum.org’s scam help and reporting guidance.
- Review token approvals after addressing the compromised credential. Check permissions on each network where you used the wallet, and revoke malicious or unnecessary allowances. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee. Disconnecting a wallet from a decentralized app does not revoke its token approvals. See ethereum.org’s guide to revoking token access.
- Secure connected accounts. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication on crypto-related accounts where available. Use each service’s official account and support channels.
- Keep evidence if funds were taken. Save transaction hashes, addresses, and relevant messages for reporting or investigation. Do not pay a stranger who promises to reverse a confirmed transaction; Ethereum support cannot reverse it.
Token approvals are not the same as a compromised key
A token approval gives a smart contract permission to move specified tokens. An unlimited allowance can leave those tokens exposed to later withdrawal, and permissions are specific to a network—so review every network on which you used the wallet. Revoking an approval requires an on-chain transaction and may cost a fee. Simply disconnecting a site is not revocation.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Approval cleanup addresses a permission; it does not make an exposed seed phrase or private key safe again. If the signing credential may be compromised, treat that as the urgent problem and use fresh credentials for the replacement wallet. MetaMask’s guidance on unauthorized transactions likewise distinguishes account compromise from app connections.
What you can—and cannot—recover
- You still have the required phrase: A compatible wallet may restore access, subject to that provider’s official instructions and your account setup.
- You have no phrase, private key, wallet access, or other valid recovery method: A self-custody wallet cannot be reset by ethereum.org or MetaMask. Do not trust anyone claiming they can recover it for a guaranteed fee.
- Your account is held by an exchange: Exchange-hosted accounts are different from self-custody wallets. Use the exchange’s official account-recovery process.
- Assets were sent in a confirmed transaction: Ethereum has no central support team that can reverse it. Recovery would depend on the recipient returning the funds or other exceptional circumstances, neither of which is assured.
Ethereum.org states that “Transactions on the blockchain are final and cannot be reversed by anyone.” Its support page also explains that “Ethereum is a decentralized network, not a company.”

Watch for recovery scams
After losing access or seeing funds disappear, a message offering urgent, guaranteed recovery can be especially persuasive. Ethereum is not a company with a central wallet-recovery desk, and ethereum.org does not hold user accounts or funds. Ethereum.org says it will not contact you first; a person claiming to be official Ethereum support or asking for a fee to recover a wallet is a serious red flag. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to them. See Ethereum’s FAQ and Ethereum support guidance.

Protect the replacement wallet
For a new wallet or future security, an Ethereum-compatible hardware wallet can keep private keys offline. It is a preventive choice, not a way to retrieve a lost credential or make an exposed wallet safe. Follow the wallet maker’s official setup and backup instructions, and keep any recovery phrase private and offline. A physical backup helps only if the phrase is still known and has not itself been exposed.
