Tell them plainly that the adult or other person is responsible and that they are not to blame. Stop the contact without confronting the suspected predator, preserve the messages and account details, report the player and each relevant item through Xbox, and contact authorities when there is a threat, blackmail, planned meeting, or other immediate danger. In the United States, also report suspected online child exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and/or the FBI.
Do these things first
- Move to a calm, private conversation. Stay with your child if they are frightened. Say, “You did the right thing by telling me. You are not in trouble, and this is not your fault.”
- Check for immediate physical danger. Ask whether the person knows the child’s name, address, school, routine, phone number or live location; has arranged a meeting; made a threat; or knows the family offline. If anyone may be in immediate danger, call local police or emergency services now.
- Do not continue the conversation. Do not bargain, threaten, impersonate your child, arrange a meeting, or move the chat to another application. Do not ask your child to keep replying so you can collect more evidence.
- Preserve what exists. Before blocking, deleting, changing usernames or resetting devices, capture the relevant information and keep it secure.
- Report, then block and mute. Use Xbox’s report tools for both the account and the individual messages, images or other content. Block and mute after the evidence is saved.
The FBI’s child-safety guidance says grooming and exploitation are never the child’s fault, regardless of what happened before, during or after the contact. Shame or punishment can make a child stop disclosing important information.

Judge urgency before choosing a reporting route
The correct response depends on the danger, the type of harm and where you live. Use more than one route when the circumstances warrant it.

An Xbox report and a law-enforcement report serve different purposes. Xbox can act on platform violations; police and child-protection agencies can address threats, attempted meetings and crimes that extend beyond the service.

Support your child without increasing the risk
Listen before investigating
Let your child describe what happened in their own words. Use open questions such as “What happened next?” and “What did the person ask you to do?” Avoid leading questions that suggest an answer, and do not pressure the child to repeat the conversation with the other person.
Use clear, nonjudgmental language
Say that adults are responsible for their own behavior, even if the child replied, shared something, accepted a gift or initially believed the person was the same age. A person claiming to be a teenager may be lying. The behavior and the safety risk matter more than the claimed age.
Protect privacy during the conversation
Talk somewhere the child feels safe. Do not circulate screenshots in family group chats or post accusations publicly. Suspected child sexual-abuse material must not be forwarded or reposted; preserve it securely and follow instructions from law enforcement or NCMEC about submitting it.

Preserve evidence before deleting or changing anything
Save the original context before blocking the account, changing the gamertag or resetting a device. Keep a written timeline with the date, time, platform and what happened.
- Gamertag, display name, profile link or identifier, and any linked usernames.
- Full chat context, including messages before and after the alarming request.
- Dates and times, time zone if known, and the Xbox account’s profile details.
- Voice-message or image context, threats, requests to move to another app, and instructions to hide the contact.
- Requests for a phone number, address, school, live location, intimate image, money or an in-person meeting.
- Payment demands, cryptocurrency or gift-card instructions, and any account used to receive money.
- Xbox report confirmation or ticket details, plus a NCMEC or police report number when one is provided.
Take screenshots or recordings only where lawful and safe. Keep an untouched copy in a secure location and avoid editing the originals. If a message contains suspected child sexual-abuse material, do not download, duplicate or send it to friends; ask the receiving agency how it wants the material handled.

If messages were already deleted
Report what you still know. Write down the gamertag, approximate dates, remembered wording, profile information and any witnesses. Do not attempt to recover material by contacting the account again. Tell Xbox or investigators that the conversation was deleted and explain when and why.
End the contact safely
Do not negotiate with or confront the suspected predator. Confrontation can provoke retaliation, destroy useful evidence or reveal that an adult is supervising the account. Do not arrange an in-person meeting, even if the person offers information that seems helpful.
After saving evidence, use Xbox’s block and mute functions. Xbox warns users to report strangers who ask them to communicate off-platform. A request to move to Discord, a private messenger, encrypted chat or a phone call is a significant escalation because it can reduce the visibility and moderation available on Xbox.
Report the player and each piece of content in Xbox
Use the in-product Xbox reporting flow for the account and for the specific messages, images or other content. Select the category that best describes each item and include the full context in the explanation.
Report every relevant item rather than submitting only the profile. Xbox states that enforcement may apply only to the reported item, so a report about a profile may not cover a separate message, image or voice communication. Save the confirmation number or screen showing that the report was submitted.

Microsoft says in-product Xbox reporting is available and that apparent grooming or child-sexual-exploitation material is reported to NCMEC when required by United States law. Platform reporting does not replace a police report when there is an immediate threat, a planned meeting, blackmail or suspected offline identification.
Escalate to police, NCMEC and the FBI
Call local police immediately when danger is imminent
Call emergency services or local police if the person is threatening the child, knows where the child lives or goes to school, has arranged or attempted a meeting, is blackmailing the family, or may be identifiable in the physical world. Tell the dispatcher that the suspected victim is a minor and that digital evidence is available. Do not wait for an Xbox investigation before seeking immediate protection.
United States: NCMEC CyberTipline
Submit suspected online child exploitation to NCMEC’s CyberTipline at cybertipline.org or call 1-800-843-5678. Include the account identifiers, timeline, platform reports and any threats or requests. Keep the submission or report number.
United States: FBI
Report to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or contact a local field office, especially for threats, extortion, attempted meetings, interstate activity or information that may identify the person. If danger is happening now, call local police first rather than relying on an online form.
Outside the United States
Use local police and your country’s child-exploitation reporting service, whose name and procedure differ by jurisdiction. You can still report the account and content through Xbox. If you are unsure which national agency handles the case, local police can direct you.

If the child is being sextorted
Sextortion is blackmail using intimate images, real or claimed, or threats to expose them. Do not pay, send another image, or promise anything in exchange for deletion. The FBI says cooperation rarely stops the blackmail; payment can lead to further demands.
- Tell the child they are not in trouble and stop replying.
- Preserve the profile, messages, threats, usernames and payment instructions.
- Report the account and content in Xbox, then block and mute it.
- Contact police and, in the United States, NCMEC and/or the FBI.
- For a minor’s intimate images, ask NCMEC about its Take It Down service and follow the agency’s instructions. Do not forward the images yourself.
If the blackmailer claims to have distributed an image, record where and when the child learned of it. Do not search for or repost copies; investigators and the reporting service can advise on preservation and removal.
Secure the Xbox account and reduce repeat contact
Preserve evidence first, then review privacy and security with the child. Microsoft says Xbox settings can limit or block what is shared with the public or friends.
- Review who can send messages, voice chat invitations, friend requests and game invitations.
- Restrict profile visibility and personal information shown to people who are not trusted friends.
- Remove unknown followers or friends and check linked accounts for unfamiliar activity.
- Change the password if account compromise is suspected and do not reuse it elsewhere.
- Enable multifactor authentication after evidence is preserved.
- Check the child’s email account and recovery details for unauthorized changes.
Explain each setting rather than secretly taking over the account. A child who understands why a restriction exists is more likely to report the next unwanted contact quickly.

The Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit describes unwanted contact as communication that makes a young person uncomfortable. Grooming may involve an older person building trust through personal attention, flattery, gifts or virtual gifts before introducing secrecy or sexual requests.

- Pressure to keep chats private or hide them from parents.
- Rapid claims of intimacy, love or a special relationship.
- Requests for a phone number, address, school, routine or live location.
- Requests for sexual conversation, nude or partially nude images, or a live camera view.
- Offers of money, game currency, gifts or other rewards tied to secrecy.
- Threats, insults or claims that the child will be blamed if they stop responding.
- Requests to move to another app, encrypted service or private account.
- Requests to meet in person or to arrange transportation.
One sign alone does not establish who the person is, but any request that compromises the child’s safety deserves a calm check-in and, where appropriate, a report.
Microsoft and Xbox state that they have a zero-tolerance approach to grooming behavior across their services and that discovered behavior should be reported. Xbox’s Community Standards, last updated May 2024, advise users to block and mute inappropriate content and report both the player and the content itself.
Support your child after the report
Online contact can continue to affect a child after the account is blocked. Check in privately over the following days and weeks. Watch for sleep problems, school avoidance, sudden withdrawal, anxiety, panic, loss of interest, unexplained gifts or money, and signs that the person is still contacting them elsewhere.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Blaming or punishing the child: this can stop future disclosures.
- Deleting everything: investigators and the platform may need the original context.
- Continuing to bait the account: it can increase risk and contaminate the child’s account of events.
- Confronting or doxxing the suspected predator: it can trigger retaliation and create legal problems.
- Paying sextortion demands: payment rarely ends blackmail.
- Reporting only the profile: Xbox may act only on the item that was reported; include each relevant message, image or voice communication.
- Sharing suspected abuse material: never forward or repost it; preserve it securely and follow official instructions.
- Assuming a claimed age is genuine: judge the conduct and risk, not the person’s profile story.
What the available Xbox reporting figure does—and does not—show
Microsoft/Xbox reported 674 reports in its first-half 2023 transparency reporting period. That is a count of reports made by Microsoft in that covered period, not a prevalence rate and not a count of unique predators or children. It cannot estimate the odds that a particular child will be contacted, so use the child’s actual messages and circumstances to decide what to do.
