What to Do If Your Car Gets Stuck in Snow

A safe order of operations for a car stuck in snow: protect occupants, avoid carbon monoxide, signal for help, and try only a brief, cautious recovery when conditions allow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your car is stuck in snow, first protect everyone inside: assess immediate danger, stay with the vehicle in a storm, and prevent snow from blocking the exhaust before running the engine. Make the car visible and call for help if you can. Try to free it only when the location and conditions make a short, careful attempt safe; stop if the wheels spin, the work becomes strenuous, or you cannot make progress.

This guidance is U.S.-focused and draws on National Weather Service (NWS) winter-storm advice and AAA Oregon/Idaho recovery tips. Road conditions, local emergency procedures, roadside-service coverage, and vehicle instructions vary, so follow local authorities and your owner’s manual where they apply.

1. Pause and decide whether the car is in immediate danger

Before getting out, look at the car’s position and the conditions around it. A vehicle stuck in a travel lane, exposed to moving traffic, or near another immediate hazard needs a different response from one safely off the road. If there is an immediate threat, someone is injured, or local authorities have issued a specific procedure, contact emergency services or the relevant road authority. There is no single roadside procedure or emergency number that applies to every U.S. jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rush into traffic or a snowstorm to inspect the vehicle. Consider whether anyone would need to stand in a lane, work in poor visibility, or remain exposed to cold and wind to attempt a recovery. If so, prioritize getting help rather than trying to move the car yourself.

Make the first decision about people and exposure, not about saving the vehicle. Ask whether the car is sheltered from moving traffic, whether you can remain inside safely, and whether anyone needs urgent assistance. A car that is merely stuck is not automatically a reason to get out and start digging; the safer choice depends on where it stopped and what the weather is doing. If conditions or the car’s position make it hard to assess the danger, avoid an exposed inspection and contact help.

2. Stay sheltered and manage carbon monoxide risk

Remain with the vehicle when the storm makes leaving unsafe

NWS guidance says to stay in the vehicle during a winter storm. Wind-driven snow and cold can make it difficult to see, navigate, or find help on foot. Leave only if a nearby safe shelter is clearly reachable and conditions support getting there; do not assume that a short-looking walk is safe when visibility or footing is poor.

Before deciding to walk, consider the whole route—not just the apparent distance. Visibility, traffic, wind, and snow-covered footing can turn a nearby building into an unsafe destination. If the route is not clearly safe, stay sheltered and arrange assistance instead of walking into the storm. AAA likewise advises staying with the car in extreme cold or heavy snow while waiting for rescuers.

Before using the engine for heat

  1. Check that snow has not covered the exhaust pipe. Clear it before starting the engine, and make sure it remains clear while the vehicle is running.
  2. Follow the NWS general winter-storm guidance: run the engine for about ten minutes per hour when heat is needed, rather than continuously.
  3. Open a window slightly while the engine runs to provide ventilation.
  4. Never run the engine in an enclosed space. Follow vehicle-specific instructions and any local emergency guidance as well.

A blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to build up in or around the vehicle. Snow can drift back over an exhaust opening, so clearing it once is not a reason to stop checking it. NWS also reiterates short engine operation, tailpipe clearance, ventilation, and battery conservation in its winter guidance; the specific operating recommendation above is about ten minutes per hour.

These are general winter-storm instructions, not a substitute for your vehicle manual or local emergency directions. If you cannot safely check and keep the exhaust clear, do not treat running the engine as a routine solution. Plan to use the engine intermittently only when the exhaust is clear and the ventilation precautions can be followed.

3. Make the vehicle easy to find and call for assistance

If your phone has service, call for roadside help or emergency assistance as appropriate, and share your location if you can. Give the dispatcher useful details such as your road or route, direction of travel, nearby landmarks, and whether anyone is injured or especially vulnerable to the cold. If you do not know your exact location, use visible signs or landmarks rather than leaving the car to search for them.

Service coverage and procedures vary, so follow the instructions you receive from the provider or local authorities.

  • At night, turn on the dome light while the engine is running so the vehicle is easier to see.
  • If available, tie a bright cloth to the antenna or a door.
  • After snowfall stops, raise the hood as a signal that the vehicle needs help.
  • Use warning devices only if you can place them without entering traffic or exposing yourself to dangerous weather.

Keep visibility actions secondary to personal safety. A signal that requires walking into a lane or standing in blowing snow is not worth the risk. If a phone call cannot connect, conserve your energy and remain sheltered while considering whether another safe communication option is available.

4. Decide whether a brief self-recovery is reasonable

A self-recovery is an option only when the car is away from immediate traffic danger and you can work without prolonged exposure or strenuous effort. Use this decision check before getting out:

Question A brief attempt may be reasonable when… Wait for help when…
Exposure You can work briefly without hazardous cold, wind, poor visibility, or traffic exposure. You would need to remain outside in dangerous conditions or work near moving traffic.
Exhaust and heat You can keep the exhaust clear and follow safe, intermittent engine use. You cannot keep the exhaust opening clear or cannot follow safe engine-use precautions.
Traction and movement You have a traction aid and can try gentle movement without sustained wheelspin. The wheels keep spinning, the car does not respond, or the attempt would require prolonged rocking.
Help and shelter You can contact assistance or have a clear, safe plan if the attempt fails. Conditions are severe and there is no safe way to carry out or end the attempt.

The table is a practical decision aid, not a promise that any recovery method is safe for every car or situation. If you are unsure about the vehicle’s capabilities or the ground around it, choose the safer option and request help.

In practice, the choice is between a short, low-effort attempt and staying sheltered while help is arranged. Think about how much time you would spend outside, whether you can use traction material, whether the exhaust can remain clear, and whether the vehicle responds to gentle pressure. A method that requires strenuous shoveling, prolonged exposure, or repeated wheelspin does not meet the test for a cautious attempt. The fact that a recovery tool is on hand does not override those limits.

5. Try a cautious recovery without spinning the tires

Clear space around the vehicle

If conditions permit, use a small shovel to clear snow from around the tires and from beneath the vehicle. Clear snow near the exhaust as well, then recheck the pipe before starting the engine. Remove only what you can safely manage; NWS warns against overexertion from heavy shoveling or pushing in the cold.

  • ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient

Keep the job limited to the snow that is preventing movement. Clearing around and under the vehicle can create room for the tires, but heavy digging or prolonged pushing can quickly become unsafe in cold conditions. Stop if the work is exhausting, if weather worsens, or if your position exposes you to traffic. Do not let the desire to finish the clearing turn a brief attempt into an extended effort.

Add traction, then use gentle pressure

AAA lists sand, cat litter, traction mats, and floor mats in a pinch as possible traction aids. Place suitable material where the tires need traction, following any instructions supplied with the aid. The available guidance does not establish that one of these materials performs better than the others, so choose what you have rather than relying on an unsupported ranking.

With the path cleared, apply gentle accelerator pressure and ease off if the tires spin. Spinning wheels can dig the vehicle in further and make the situation harder to manage. Avoid abrupt inputs or continuing to apply power when the car is not moving; the aim is controlled movement, not force.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Traction aids are an option, not a guarantee of recovery. If you do not have one, do not substitute increasingly forceful acceleration for traction. The same stop rule applies whether you have a mat, sand, cat litter, or a floor mat available: if gentle movement produces wheelspin rather than progress, ease off and reassess. No ranking among these materials is established by the cited AAA tips.

Keep any rocking attempt brief

AAA describes slowly rocking the vehicle as a possible technique, but cautions that prolonged rocking can damage an automatic transmission or clutch. If gentle forward and reverse movement does not produce progress quickly, stop rather than repeating the cycle. Follow the owner’s manual for any vehicle-specific limits or instructions.

If another person is helping push, keep them clear of powered wheels. AAA warns that gravel, sand, or ice can fly from the tires and injure someone standing behind them. Do not ask anyone to push from a position where the vehicle could strike them or where they are exposed to traffic.

Think of rocking as a brief try, not a plan to continue until the car moves. If the tires spin or the car does not respond quickly, repeated cycles add risk without a clear path to success. Stop the engine before anyone approaches the vehicle to clear snow or reposition a traction aid, and do not place a helper behind a powered wheel. If people cannot stay clear of both traffic and the tires, do not involve them in pushing.

6. Stop the attempt and arrange help

End a recovery attempt if the tires continue to spin, the car remains stuck after a short try, clearing snow becomes strenuous, or weather and visibility worsen. Do not trade a vehicle recovery for exposure, injury, or vehicle damage. Contact roadside service when available; AAA advises requesting service if safe shelter is reachable. Service availability depends on your location and provider.

In extreme cold or heavy snow, AAA advises staying with the car until rescuers arrive. Before leaving for shelter, weigh the actual route, weather, visibility, traffic, and whether the shelter is truly safe to reach. A nearby building is not a useful refuge if reaching it requires crossing a dangerous road or walking into a storm. If local authorities give different instructions, follow those instructions.

If you have already tried to get free, do not keep repeating the same unsuccessful steps just because help has not arrived yet. Stop, return to a sheltered position if safe, and update the service provider with any change in your location or circumstances. If your phone is usable, keep it available for instructions; if contact is unavailable, avoid spending energy on hazardous signaling or repeated attempts that are not improving the situation.

7. Prepare before winter travel

A few basic supplies can make it easier to stay warm, communicate, and assess a vehicle without turning a breakdown into an unsafe recovery attempt. NWS and AAA list these items as relevant for a winter emergency kit:

  • A small shovel for clearing snow around and under the vehicle.
  • Traction material, such as sand, cat litter, traction mats, or a floor mat that can be used in a pinch.
  • A flashlight and extra clothing or blankets.
  • Food and water.
  • Communication supplies, including a charged phone and any charging equipment you normally rely on.

Keep supplies accessible rather than buried under luggage. A shovel or traction aid is useful only if you can reach and use it safely; having equipment does not make it safe to leave the vehicle during a dangerous storm. Check your vehicle manual and local travel guidance before a winter trip, and confirm how to request roadside help in the area where you will be driving.

A compact shovel is especially practical because it can help clear snow from around and beneath the car. Traction mats are another option to consider, but they are one choice among several; the listed guidance does not establish a best-performing product or brand. Keep equipment secondary to the essentials: staying sheltered when conditions are dangerous, controlling exhaust risk, and contacting help. Before setting out, make sure you know how to reach the supplies and how to request roadside assistance in the area you will travel.

Winter supplies are there to support safe decisions, not to make every stuck vehicle a do-it-yourself recovery. A person may have a shovel and traction aid but still face dangerous wind, poor visibility, traffic, or a blocked exhaust. In those circumstances, use the supplies only if it is safe to do so—or leave them packed and wait for help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if my car gets stuck in snow?

First assess whether the vehicle is in immediate danger and whether anyone is injured. Stay with the car if the storm makes leaving unsafe, clear the exhaust before running the engine, and contact roadside help or emergency services as appropriate. Make the vehicle visible. Try a short recovery only if you can do so without hazardous exposure or exertion; stop if the wheels spin or you make no quick progress.

Should I stay in my car if I’m stranded in a snowstorm?

Generally, yes: NWS advises staying in the vehicle during a winter storm because wind-driven snow and cold can make walking for help dangerous. Leave only when safe shelter is clearly reachable and conditions support the trip. In extreme cold or heavy snow, AAA advises staying with the car until rescuers arrive.

How do I get my car unstuck without spinning the tires?

If it is safe to get out, clear snow from around the tires and beneath the vehicle, and consider a traction aid such as sand, cat litter, traction mats, or a floor mat in a pinch. Then use gentle accelerator pressure and ease off if the tires spin. A brief, slow rocking attempt may be possible, but stop if it does not work quickly; prolonged rocking can damage an automatic transmission or clutch.

How long should I run my car if I’m stranded in the snow?

NWS general winter-storm guidance says to run the engine about ten minutes per hour when heat is needed, not continuously. Clear snow from the exhaust first, keep it clear while the engine runs, and open a window slightly for ventilation. Do not run the engine in an enclosed space, and follow your vehicle manual and local emergency instructions.

The Bottom Line

If your car gets stuck in snow, prioritize people over the vehicle: stay sheltered when the storm makes walking unsafe, keep the exhaust clear before using the engine, and make the car visible while you call for help. Attempt recovery only when conditions allow a short, gentle effort. Stop if you encounter wheelspin, strenuous work, traffic exposure, or worsening weather.
