The reliable way to build a tactic is to choose the defensive shape first, then use roles, focuses and familiarity to create the attacking movement you want.
FC IQ in FC 26: the parts of a tactic
FC IQ is FC 26’s system for connecting formation, player responsibilities and team instructions. It is easier to understand when you treat a tactic as several layers rather than as one formation graphic.

EA describes the principle succinctly: “Player Roles guide how every player thinks, behaves, and moves off the ball.” That statement appears in the FC IQ deep dive published on August 21, 2024. The FC 25 article explains the underlying model; FC 26’s gameplay notes add roles, focuses and management tools to it.
What a formation actually changes
A formation is not a promise that your players will occupy those exact spots for the entire match. It is the team’s base arrangement and determines which positions and role slots are available. Most importantly, EA says it defines how the side lines up to defend without the ball.

That defensive reference matters when comparing, for example, a four-defender shape with a three-defender shape. The first question is not “Which graphic attacks best?” but “What do I want to see when possession is lost?” A narrow midfield can protect the centre but concede width; a wide structure can reach wingers sooner but leave larger interior gaps.
EA’s foundational FC IQ explanation does not provide a separate, freely selected attacking formation. Instead, roles and focuses make the in-possession shape different from the defensive graphic. A full-back may advance, a midfielder may move into a high central lane, or a forward may drop toward the ball. You therefore select the defensive base and design the attacking picture through individual assignments.
When assessing a formation in FC 26, inspect both the With Ball and Without Ball views in the squad tactics interface. The two views show why a formation that looks similar on paper can create very different spacing once roles are applied.

Player roles and focuses
Role: the player’s job description
A Role sets a player’s primary responsibilities and movement away from the ball. It influences where the player offers support, which lanes they occupy, when they make runs and how they help the team progress or defend. The role is attached to the position in your selected formation, so changing the formation can change the available choices.
Focus: the emphasis within that role
A Focus modifies a role rather than replacing it. Two players can share the same base Role but behave differently because one is given a more attacking, balanced or defensive focus. Read the in-game description for the exact effect: EA’s system deliberately gives roles positive and negative trade-offs. A setting that adds attacking runs can also make recovery slower, for example.

Role Familiarity: useful guidance, not a hard requirement
FC IQ distinguishes four familiarity states in its original model:
- Role: the player can perform the basic assignment.
- Role+: the player has stronger suitability for that assignment.
- Role++: the player is especially proficient in the role.
- Out of Position: the role is not a natural fit for the player’s listed positions or abilities.
Familiarity is best used when choosing between otherwise similar players. It does not mean every tactic must be built only from Role++ cards. EA explicitly says base roles remain viable, so a coherent team shape can be more valuable than forcing a nominally higher familiarity level that leaves an important area uncovered.

New and revised FC 26 roles
EA’s FC 26 gameplay notes add four roles. They are not simply new labels; each changes how a player supports the team.

FC 26 also adds a Versatile focus, replaces FC 25’s Advanced Forward Complete focus with Advanced Forward Versatile, and adds or revises focuses for existing roles. Regular roles and Role+ options have been improved relative to Role++, according to EA, so the badge level alone is not a complete measure of effectiveness. Because descriptions can change with updates, read the current text shown for the player and role rather than relying on an old player-specific guide.

How Tactical Presets differ from Tactical Suggestions
Tactical Presets
A Tactical Preset is a ready-made setup inspired by a recognizable football strategy. EA Help says presets can get a team organized quickly or provide a starting point for customization. The EA Help guide to Career Mode also states that Tactical Presets are compatible with the available formations.
Presets are useful when you are learning FC IQ because they give you a complete, internally coherent baseline. After applying one, inspect its roles and focuses instead of assuming the preset name explains every movement. If you edit the setup, the game may show compatibility warnings, and a Custom Preset can have incompatibilities. Treat the warning and the in-game summary as authoritative rather than assuming the team will behave exactly like the original preset.
Tactical Suggestions
Tactical Suggestions are different from selecting a fixed preset. In FC 26, a suggestion creates a version of the tactic suited to the players in your squad while preserving your existing formation. It is therefore a way to adapt roles and responsibilities without replacing the defensive base you deliberately chose.
Use a preset when you want a complete starting philosophy; use a suggestion when the formation already suits you but the current squad needs different assignments.
A practical method for building a tactic
- Choose the defensive base. Select the formation that gives you the defenders, midfield cover and pressing distances you want when possession is lost. Do not judge it only by the attacking diagram.
- Check the available slots. Each formation exposes different positions and role choices. Confirm that the roles you need—such as a holding midfielder, wide defender or second striker—actually exist in that structure.
- Set the spine first. Assign the goalkeeper, centre-backs, deepest midfielder and main forward before adjusting supporting players. This establishes build-up outlets and protection in transition.
- Create your With Ball shape. Use roles and focuses to decide who provides width, who occupies central spaces and who makes runs beyond the ball. Remember that the attacking shape is produced by movement, not by selecting a second formation.
- Check the Without Ball view. Look for uncovered flanks, an isolated centre-back, or too many players leaving their defensive zones. A role that looks attractive in possession may create a recovery problem.
- Review familiarity and trade-offs. Prefer a player’s stronger Role or Role+ when it supports the plan, but keep a base role if it produces a better overall structure. Read negative effects such as delayed recovery before accepting an aggressive focus.
- Test the squad view. FC 26 adds an Out of Position indicator and With/Without Ball views. Use them to identify assignments that are technically possible but strategically poor.
- Save the tactic. FC 26 supports saving and loading tactics codes. The game also includes compatibility that converts FC 25 tactics codes to FC 26 format, but inspect the converted roles and focuses because the newer game has changed options.
How to choose between role options
When two assignments both appear viable, compare them on four axes rather than chasing the highest familiarity badge.

This framework also explains why there is no universally best formation. EA’s official material describes the intended behaviors and design trade-offs, but it does not establish a comparative match study that ranks one formation above all others. The best choice depends on the players available, the spaces you want to attack and the defensive risks you accept.

The new tactical breakdown chart summarizes six dimensions: Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. Use it as a diagnostic rather than a score to maximize. A high Attack value may coincide with weaker defensive recovery; a wide setup can improve outlets while increasing the distance between midfielders.
FC 26’s squad view also makes Out of Position indicators easier to find. Check those indicators after changing formation, importing a code or applying a suggestion, because a converted or adapted tactic may assign a player differently from the original version.
Common problems and fixes
“My attacking shape does not match the formation graphic.”
This is expected when roles move players in possession. Compare the With Ball and Without Ball views, then identify which role is creating the movement. If the spacing is harmful, change that player’s role or focus rather than searching for a separate attacking formation.
“The preset changed after I edited it.”
Editing a ready-made plan can turn it into a custom setup or trigger compatibility warnings. Review the summary after each change and treat the current assignments—not the original preset label—as the tactic you are actually using.

“A Role++ player performs worse than a Role player.”
Familiarity improves suitability for a role; it does not compensate for a poor team structure or an unsuitable player profile. Compare the player’s movement, defensive cover and passing options in both views. FC 26 also improves regular roles and Role+ options, so Role++ is not automatically superior in every situation.
“An Out of Position assignment seems usable.”
FC 26 reduces the penalty for being Out of Position, so an occasional compromise can work. Keep it only if the player’s movement solves a specific problem and another teammate covers the resulting space. Otherwise, select a natural role or change the formation.
“A tactics code behaves differently after conversion.”
FC 26 can convert FC 25 tactics codes, but the games do not have identical role and focus inventories. After loading a converted code, inspect every role, focus, familiarity indicator and With/Without Ball view before playing with it.
Which starting point should you use?
- New to FC IQ: apply a Tactical Preset, study its role descriptions and make one change at a time.
- Know the formation you want: keep that formation and use Tactical Suggestions to adapt assignments to your squad.
- Building a specialist plan: start from the defensive shape, assign the spine, then add width, runners and pressing support while checking recovery behavior.
- Importing an older setup: load or convert the code, then audit every assignment because FC 26 adds roles and changes focuses.
FC 25 figures versus FC 26 features
EA’s FC 25 deep dive said the game launched with 31 roles and 52 role-focus combinations. Those are FC 25 launch-era figures, not a count for FC 26. FC 26 adds four roles, new and revised focuses, more available positions and roles, and reduced Out of Position impact, so do not use the older totals to describe the current game.
