Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not panic or move coins to an unverified “quantum-safe” wallet. First determine which unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) have exposed or reused public keys, stop creating new exposure, and keep your signing keys offline. A hardware wallet or metal seed backup improves protection against theft, malware and loss, but it does not change Bitcoin’s ECDSA or Schnorr signature rules.
Bitcoin’s proposed quantum-migration mechanisms are drafts, not activated mainnet features in the sources available for this article. The safest present response is disciplined key custody, fresh receiving addresses and a monitored plan to use an officially activated migration path when Bitcoin Core, wallet developers and consensus rules support one.

Why a quantum attack is a Bitcoin transaction problem
A Bitcoin wallet is not a vault containing coins. It stores private keys that authorize spending from UTXOs recorded on the blockchain. The relevant question is therefore not simply whether your wallet application is “quantum-safe”; it is whether a public key associated with a spendable UTXO has been revealed and which signature rules protect that output.
Public-key exposure creates the long-exposure risk
Bitcoin normally lets an address hide the public key until the output is spent. Once a transaction reveals that key, a sufficiently capable quantum computer could use a quantum algorithm to search for the corresponding private key much faster than a classical computer. BIP 360 calls this a long-exposure attack: an attacker has time to work on an already exposed public key before the owner spends again.

Address reuse makes this risk easier to accumulate. If you repeatedly receive or leave funds associated with an address whose public key has already appeared on-chain, every later balance remains tied to that exposed key. Using a fresh address for each receipt does not make Bitcoin post-quantum, but it limits the period during which an unspent output’s public key is available to an attacker.
Short-exposure attacks happen during spending
A different threat arises when a transaction is being broadcast. The public key and signature may become visible in the mempool before confirmation, giving an attacker a short window to derive the private key and race a conflicting transaction. BIP 360 says its proposed Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) output removes the quantum-vulnerable Taproot key-path spend, but P2MR alone does not eliminate short-exposure attacks. Those would require a future post-quantum signature scheme and corresponding consensus and wallet support.
| Exposure type | When the key is visible | What reduces the risk now |
|---|---|---|
| Long exposure | Public key is already revealed on-chain and the UTXO remains spendable. | Avoid reuse, spend only through a verified plan, and track exposed UTXOs separately. |
| Short exposure | During the brief period between broadcasting and confirmation. | No complete consumer fix is activated; future consensus-level post-quantum signatures would be required. |
Seven actions to take now
- Stop address reuse. Generate a new receiving address for every new payment. Do not publish an old address as a permanent donation or payment address.
- Inventory your UTXOs. Export or record each address, transaction ID, amount, confirmation status and whether its public key has been revealed by a prior spend. If you cannot establish the history, mark the output as unknown rather than assuming it is safe.
- Separate exposed funds operationally. Label exposed, unexposed and uncertain UTXOs in your wallet or watch-only system. Avoid consolidating many outputs into one transaction merely for convenience; consolidation can reveal additional keys and creates a larger, easier-to-audit target.
- Move signing offline. Use an offline or signing-only arrangement so private keys are not continuously connected to an internet-facing device. Verify transaction details on a trusted screen before signing and transfer only the signed transaction to an online broadcaster.
- Protect the recovery material. Keep seed phrases and private keys offline, use durable backups, and test recovery with a small amount. Never type a seed into a website, chat, browser extension or “quantum recovery” utility.
- Freeze unverified migration offers. A new token, sidechain, wallet plug-in or address format is not a Bitcoin consensus upgrade. Do not send funds until you can verify activation status, destination output type, recovery behavior, fee rules and independent implementation review.
- Monitor authoritative releases. Follow Bitcoin Core release notes, the BIP process and documentation from the wallet you actually use. A migration is actionable only after the relevant consensus rules are activated and your wallet can create, sign, recover and spend the new output type.
How to audit a wallet without exposing its keys
Use public data for the first pass
You can inspect addresses, transaction histories and UTXO amounts with a block explorer or your own node without revealing a seed phrase. For stronger privacy, perform the analysis on a watch-only wallet or your own indexed node. The objective is to map which outputs exist, not to upload private keys to a service promising a risk score.

Classify each output
| UTXO condition | Practical classification | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Address has never been spent and its public key has not appeared in a spending transaction. | Unexposed, subject to ordinary wallet and address assumptions. | Do not reuse the address; receive future funds elsewhere. |
| The address has been spent from, or the public key is otherwise visible on-chain. | Exposed to long-exposure risk. | Record it separately and avoid unnecessary delays or reuse. |
| History cannot be verified, or the wallet has imported and derived keys in an unknown way. | Uncertain. | Reconstruct derivation and transaction history before making a migration decision. |
| A spend is broadcast but unconfirmed. | Potential short-exposure window. | Do not assume a fee bump or replacement makes the signature quantum-resistant; seek wallet-specific guidance. |
Do not treat the address prefix alone as proof of safety. Legacy, SegWit and Taproot outputs use different script and signature paths, but none should be described as universally quantum-resistant under Bitcoin’s currently activated rules.
What offline storage can and cannot do
Offline storage reduces ordinary attack surfaces: malware cannot sign a transaction from a device that is not connected, and a signing-only workflow limits the time private keys spend on an internet-connected computer. Multiple geographically separated backups reduce the chance that fire, flood or a single theft destroys recovery material.
These controls protect custody, not mathematics. If a future attacker can derive a private key from an exposed public key, keeping the seed on a metal backup does not alter that relationship. Likewise, a hardware wallet can enforce confirmation screens and isolate keys while still producing the ECDSA or Schnorr signatures required by current Bitcoin consensus.

Where Bitcoin’s proposed migration plans stand
The mechanisms most often discussed in this context are proposals, not a switch you can enable in a current wallet.
Recommended Free Tools
| Proposal or source | What it says | Status and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| BIP 360 | Proposes P2MR, which removes the quantum-vulnerable Taproot key-path spend and addresses long-exposure protection by avoiding exposed public keys. | Proposal. P2MR does not by itself stop short-exposure attacks; a post-quantum signature scheme would still be needed. |
| BIP 361 | Draft informational soft-fork plan with a Phase A that disallows new sends to quantum-vulnerable addresses and a Phase B that later tightens legacy ECDSA/Schnorr spending rules after a flag day. | Draft, not activated consensus. Its migration schedule and enforcement details are not a present deadline. |
| NIST post-quantum standards | NIST says three post-quantum cryptography standards are ready for implementation and urges migration before quantum computers threaten current encryption. | General cryptographic standards; they do not automatically define Bitcoin scripts, signatures, wallet backups or mainnet activation. |
BIP 361 reports that, as of March 1, 2026, over 34% of all bitcoin had revealed a public key on-chain. That is a figure stated by the proposal’s authors, not an independently verified network measurement. The same draft cites a 2027–2030 estimate attributed to McKinsey; treat it as an estimate, not a forecast or deadline. No authoritative source establishes when a cryptographically relevant quantum computer will be able to break Bitcoin.

| Question | Evidence you should require |
|---|---|
| Is it valid on Bitcoin mainnet? | A specified consensus activation, Bitcoin Core support and a wallet release that creates and spends the output. |
| What attacks does it cover? | Explicit treatment of both long-exposure and short-exposure attacks, not merely a claim that keys are stored offline. |
| Can you recover? | Documented seed, descriptor, derivation and inheritance procedures, tested with a small amount before a full transfer. |
| Is the implementation mature? | Independent review, reproducible builds where applicable, public issue history and more than one compatible implementation. |
| What is the transaction cost? | Published witness or script sizes, fee behavior under congestion and interoperability with ordinary nodes and wallets. |
| What happens to old outputs? | A clear timetable, spending rules and recovery path for legacy ECDSA and Schnorr outputs. |
Common decisions, answered precisely
Should you move all BTC to a new address?
Not automatically. Moving coins between addresses does not create post-quantum signatures, and an unnecessary transaction can reveal keys, incur fees or create an avoidable operational mistake. First classify the UTXO, then move only when you have a verified security reason and a destination format supported by the activated Bitcoin rules and your wallet.
Are Taproot addresses quantum-safe?
No blanket answer is justified. Current Taproot key-path spending uses Schnorr signatures and is part of the signature surface discussed by the migration proposals. BIP 360’s P2MR design is intended to remove that vulnerable key path, but P2MR is not an activated standard in the material available here.

It protects private-key custody against many conventional threats and can support offline signing. It does not replace Bitcoin’s signature algorithm or prevent a quantum attacker from targeting an exposed public key under current consensus rules.
Best Value
Can you buy a quantum-resistant Bitcoin wallet today?
No current consumer product is established here as an activated Bitcoin mainnet solution. A wallet may implement experimental cryptography or a separate network, but that is not the same as a consensus-compatible migration for BTC held on Bitcoin mainnet.
How urgent is the threat?
The cryptographic risk is real in principle, but the date of a capable quantum computer is not established. Use the uncertainty to improve address hygiene, key custody and recovery testing now; do not convert an estimate in a draft proposal into a panic deadline.
Quick Recap
A practical maintenance routine
- Generate a fresh receiving address before each payment and verify it on the signing device.
- Review UTXO exposure whenever you consolidate, sweep or rotate funds.
- Keep a watch-only record so balances can be monitored without importing private keys online.
- Test wallet recovery periodically with a controlled amount and document the derivation details.
- Read release notes before upgrading and confirm that a claimed new output type is active on the network you use.
- Ignore unsolicited messages asking for a seed, emergency migration fee or remote “quantum audit.”
