If your baby drank prepared formula that may have been left out too long, discard what remains and contact your baby’s pediatric clinician for advice tailored to the exposure. In the United States, you can also call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222; its guidance depends on details such as the baby’s age, the amount consumed, and any symptoms. Call 911 if your baby collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened.
What to do now
- Stop using the bottle. Discard the remaining formula. Do not offer more from a bottle that exceeded the recommended time limits.
- Get individualized guidance. Call your baby’s pediatric clinician. In the United States, Poison Control is available at 1-800-222-1222; its guidance considers factors including age, substance, amount, and symptoms, and its page advises calling for infants younger than six months. Outside the United States, contact your local poison center or emergency service.
- Call 911 for emergency signs. Call if the baby collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened. For other concerns, contact the pediatric clinician or Poison Control to determine the next step.
Do not try to predict whether your baby will become ill from a general time-limit rule. The available guidance does not quantify the risk from one exposure or establish that a particular bottle was contaminated.

Why the baby’s age and health matter
CDC says extra precautions are needed when preparing formula for babies younger than two months, babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy), and babies with weakened immune systems. Contaminated powdered formula can expose infants to Cronobacter, an infection CDC describes as rare but serious. This guidance identifies groups needing extra care; it does not show that the bottle your baby drank was contaminated or provide an exposure-specific illness likelihood.

How long prepared formula can be kept
The CDC’s Infant Formula Preparation and Storage guidance says prepared formula should be used within two hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. Apply whichever limit comes first; the one-hour feeding window is not an extra hour added after the two-hour preparation window.

If you are unsure when the bottle was prepared or when feeding began, ask the clinician or Poison Control for advice instead of relying on its appearance or smell.
