Yes. If prepared infant formula was refrigerated promptly and has not been fed to the baby, you can warm it before feeding—but warming is optional. Hold the bottle under warm running water, keeping water out of the bottle and off the nipple, then test a few drops on your wrist. Never microwave formula: uneven heating can create hot spots that burn a baby’s mouth or throat.
How to warm a refrigerated bottle safely
- Check that the bottle is still within its storage window. Prepared formula should be refrigerated promptly if it will not be used within two hours of preparation. Use refrigerated prepared formula within 24 hours.
- Warm it gently if you choose. Hold the bottle under warm running water. Keep the water outside the bottle and away from the nipple. CDC describes this method; a bowl of heated water is another method described by HealthyChildren.org.
- Check the temperature before feeding. Put a few drops on the inside of your wrist. The formula should not feel too hot.
Do not microwave formula or heat it directly on the stove. Microwave heating can be uneven, and the resulting hot spots may burn the baby even if the bottle feels cooler on the outside. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org also advises against heating prepared formula on the stove.

How long prepared formula keeps

Warming does not restart or extend the storage clock. These time limits are from CDC guidance for prepared infant formula; follow the product label and your child’s clinician’s directions where they differ.

Cold or warmed: which should you choose?
Either is acceptable for a safely stored, unused bottle. Formula does not need to be warmed; the CDC states, “Infant formula does not need to be warmed before feeding.” Serve it cold if your baby accepts it, or warm it gently if that is your preference. A bottle warmer is not required by the cited guidance, and no particular device is recommended there.
